In 1983, the typical Penang Ferries have bee the one way to connect Butterworth at the Malaysian mainland with Georgetown on Penang Island. Georgetown has alway been an important trading place for Southeast Asia. Crossing over took only 15 minutes.
Only two years later, in 1985 the 13.5 kilometre long Penang Bridge to the mainland wasopened. It was the longest bridge in Southeast Asia. Due to the steadily growing car traffic, the old ferry connection is continuing to operate. A second bridge with a length of 24 kilomeztes was opened then in 2014.
In my first comment box you can see, how many ferries have been operating at the time.

So many beautiful butterflies on Penang Hill. I'm not sure what species they are though.
Sorry I haven't commented much lately - it's incredibly busy as we prepare for the end of our school year
In 1981, Rickshaws have been a common transportation in Penang at this time. Today they were used only for tourists in the historical part of Georgetown which is UNESCO world heritage,

Penang Hill has been the destination for the British colonial community to enjoy the cooler air of the Penang Hill. That's why they constructed the railway to get up there easy and fast.

Early Morning on Penang Hill overseeing Georgetown and the Penang bridge to the mainland of Malaysia. It was a pretty clear view as it was raining since weeks the evening before and brought down the mist.
This was my last morning in Asia.

A view from Gurney Drive on the left to Komtar in Georgetown on the right.
It has been many yonks since I last hiked here, probably 35 years ago. There were no paved ways and filled with dried leaves. I remembered we have to run down on these paths to avoid any slips. Those were the days 😊
