Pediatric ward of the old psych hospital. The teddy bear is likely an offering by a modern ghost hunter or some other visitor moved by the idea that children as young as newborns were kept here for reasons as meaningless as showing signs of Down Syndrome or being born to a mother who was a patient here.

I was asked to create some custom figures to support the Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation, which raises money for Brain Cancer Research.

Dr. Marnie Rose was just 27 and in the first year of her pediatric medical residency at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital when she was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. Despite her diagnosis, she agreed to share all - her cancer journey, personal life and professional duties as a medical resident - with a TV crew from the ABC reality series Houston Medical.

The Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation now has donated $4.75 million to brain cancer research at MD Anderson, pediatric initiatives at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, and the newly established Dr. Marnie Rose Professorship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at McGovern Medical School (formerly UTHealth Medical School).

Run for the Rose:

drmarnierose.org/run-for-the-rose/

Brain cancer will once again meet its match in April as patients, supporters and family members converge for the 14th Annual Run for the Rose on Sunday, April 10, 8 a.m., at NRG Park. Run for the Rose, a certified 5K, supports MD Anderson Cancer Center’s immunotherapy research, new drug development and clinical trials for patients with brain cancer, as well as neuroscience research initiatives and the Pediatric Palliative Care Program at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Clearly I was happy to participate and create these figures. Figures will be auctioned to raise funds for the foundation.

During the recent exercise, EMT students stabilized the patient in the tactical village of the new Homeland Security Education Center, a 66,000 square-foot building that features a full-scale tactical village for police force-on-force training, a smoke room and full-size ambulance for firefighter/EMT courses, an outside high tower for rappelling exercises, as well as forensics and cybercrimes laboratories.

After calling in the emergency, EMT students rushed their patient to the College's new Hospital Simulation Lab in the Health and Sciences Center (HSC), where COD Nursing students took over to assess and treat the patient. Pictured: College of DuPage Nursing student Monashay Pertee.

Pediatric patient Brooklynn Snapp (center) was part of the announcement. . She is shown here with her mother (left) and a teacher.

A health worker preparing medication.

Over 800 children have fallen ill with measles in the last two months, it is a major epidemic. In the developed world measles is a minor inconvenience, in a country like Guinea it is often fatal. .Measles is preventable, a well functioning routine vaccination programme should prevent epidemics breaking out, and should an epidemic occur an emergency response should prevent it becoming generalised. However Guinea has been going economic and political turmoil since 2006 , this has weakened the health services. As a result routine vaccination is no longer fully effective, hence the current epidemic.

The government, UNICEF, WHO and other actors got together to conduct a country wide campaign from November 20 to 26th to vaccinate against measles combined with the distribution of bed nets against malaria and vitamin a and deworming tablets to minimise malnutrition.

I spent the day visiting a hospitals, health centres and vaccination points to better understand what needs to be done. The condition of the children in the hospital was critical. There is a local practice of treating fever with palm wine and ice water baths, partly this is because people believe it works and partly because they want to delay having to pay for medicine or treatment. This has the unfortunate result that many children who are referred to the hospital arrive at a very and dangerous state in the development of the disease, also the ice burns the skin of the children aggravating their condition. .I spoke with the parents and children; they were confused and worried by what was happening to their children.

The parents agreed to my taking photographs. Looking at the images I find them shocking; I do not know what is right to do. To not show them is to hide a reality about measles that people need to know about, to mobilise support. But it is not possible to be dignified when you have measles.

One of the children that we saw died that night, it should have been avoided.

Shot was taken at the wonderful view of Diamond Hotel in Manila, while I was attending day 3 of the 52nd Philippine Pediatric Society Annual Convention.

As you can see, there are some soft spots on the shots, that's because the window is permanently sealed (thus, can't slide it away) and adds to another glass variable to the equation. Also, I didn't bring my complete photography gear, like the tripod and a shutter remote. So I was doing alot of MacGyver stuff here and this is the best I can do =/

Hope you still like this shot even if it is far from what others would deem perfect.

I will be posting more shots of my stay in Manila in the coming days. Take this as a teaser.

More than most other physicians, pediatricians face complicated ethical questions about what information they should disclose, and to whom, when genomic sequencing uncovers signs of possible future genetically influenced disease in patients who are too young to give informed consent.

Pediatric Dentist Brochure design template by Jenna Ebanks.Showcased on Inkd.com.

A pediatric dentist could use this brochure to help kids and parents understand the importance of developing good oral hygiene habits at a young age. The hand drawn pattern paired with the image of young children conveys the image of a professional whose job is rooted in the health of children. There is also abundant space within the brochure for descriptive text regarding brushing, care, and office hours.
