The most iconic structure in all of Marken is certainly the so-called Paard van Marken ("Horse of Marken"), a monumental lighthouse that rises from the easternmost point of the peninsula; the current structure dates from 1839. The peculiar name stems from its shape, which consists of a 54-ft. (16m) tower attached to two pyramidal-roofed houses. Since the Paard van Marken is now a private residence, it is closed to the public.

La Scala dei Turchi è una falesia viva costituita da uno sperone di marna bianca prominente sul mare lungo la costa tra Realmonte e Porto Empedocle, in provincia di Agrigento. È diventata nel tempo un'attrazione turistica sia per la singolarità della scogliera, di colore bianco e dalle peculiari forme, sia a seguito della popolarità acquisita dai romanzi con protagonista il commissario Montalbano scritti dallo scrittore empedoclino Andrea Camilleri. La Scala dei Turchi presenta una forma ondulata e irregolare, con linee non aspre bensì dolci e rotondeggianti. Il nome le viene dalle passate incursioni di pirateria da parte dei saraceni, genti arabe e, per convenzione, turche; i pirati turchi, infatti, trovavano riparo in questa zona meno battuta dai venti e rappresentante un più sicuro approdo. Secondo la leggenda, durante le invasioni moresche che imperversarono nel '500, i turchi (così erroneamente chiamati) approdarono nel territorio dell'odierna Realmonte inerpicandosi sulle stratificazioni di questa falesia.

La Scala dei Turchi is a living cliff formed by a spur of white marl prominently on the sea along the coast between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, in the province of Agrigento. It has become over time a tourist attraction both for the singularity of the cliff, white in color and the peculiar shapes, and following the popularity gained by the novels starring the commissioner Montalbano written by the writer Andrea Camilleri. The Scala dei Turchi has a wavy and irregular shape, with not sour lines but rather sweet and roundish. The name comes from past piracy raids by the Saracens, Arab people and, by convention, Turkish; the Turkish pirates, in fact, found shelter in this area less beaten by the winds and representing a safer landing place. According to legend, during the Moorish invasions that raged in the 16th century, the Turks (so mistakenly called) landed in the territory of today's Realmonte climbing the stratifications of this cliff.

IUCN Red List Status: Endangered
The Bateleur is a mid-sized African eagle with long wings and a very short tail. It lives in partially open savanna country and woodland within Sub-Saharan Africa. The adults have spectacular colors but the juveniles have a quite uniform brown colors. It may take up to 8 years before the birds have the full adult plumage.
Bateleur is the French word for "tightrope-walker", this aptly describes its distinctive, erratic and unstable manner of flying; the rocking flight motion very much mimics the side-to-side movement of a tight rope walker maintaining his balance. The species also demonstrates some spectacular aerial displays, particularly during courtship.
They prey on mammals (often rodents), birds and reptiles. While looking for food they stay up in the air for up to 8 hours and cover huge distances. Carrion is also a part of their diet, especially for juvenile and immature birds. Many carcasses are often first detected by a Bateleur ( or a Tawny Eagle ) well before the vultures arrive

Los peculiares palheiros de Santana se han convertido en los verdaderos símbolos de Madeira. Son cabañas en forma de "A", pintadas de vivos colores y cubiertas por techumbres de paja y brezo.
Son sorprendentemente amplias y acogedoras en su interior de madera. Antaño eran numerosas, pero sufrieron el abandono con el desarrollo del siglo XX y la mejora de las condiciones de vida. Hoy se conservan en buen estado alrededor de una docena, que en su mayoría se pueden visitar, pues pertenecen al Ayuntamiento.

La forma tan peculiar con la que se disponen los odonatos a la hora de copular hace que, algunas veces, se asemeje a un corazón.
Esta pareja de Enallagma cyathigerum es una muestra de ello.
Especie muy extendida por toda Europa, llegando incluso hasta prácticamente el Círculo Polar Ártico (eso es lo que dicen los libros).

Very widespread species throughout Europe, even reaching practically the Arctic Circle (that's what the books say).

Definitely one of my favorite birds, not only because it is incredibly cute and very friendly, but also because it is a very caring and loving bird.
From the paridae family, (same as the chickadee) they have a very peculiar way of taking care of their young, usually with the help of one of their offsprings from the previous year. How do they decide who stays behind to help is simply fascinating to me!
