this was my pre-lenten "feast" when we suddenly became out of money. a caramel and some tea. (i gave up going out for lent and had planned a dinner at paley's place... but it turned out we didn't have the money)
One thing I miss about upstate New York is that days like today in Portland basically are what the whole Fall is like. This is supposed to be an entire season, not just the intermittent day.
this was the last photo i took of the trip. i couldn't bear to document it anymore; everyone was so cold they were sobbing, unless they were just seething. i'm afraid vancouver, washington may never see our whole family again.

right before we'd gotten ready to go, monroe had vaulted out of a recycling box (a small, empty one) into a stack of cookie sheets, breaking his tooth and garnering the gash on his chin. it still hasn't healed completely.

six buses. four trains. two states. a snowstorm that ended up a lot colder and snowier than we at first thought. we'd survive, but would we ever go to vancouver again?
