This is how I found Sethi on the porch this morning. He noticed me but didn't move, in fact he didn't even open an eye. A few minutes later Tofu came out onto the porch and started to nudge Sethi with his paw. That finally provoked a reaction. :)

These are called Kangaroo Paws. I’ll admit I’ve yet to see a kangaroo with a paw that looks remotely like this, obviously imagination plays a big role in botany. There were thousands of them in bloom throughout Kings Park in Perth this day, in all manner of shapes and colours. I liked the colourful bokeh from all the other paws in the background. Gave me paws for thought ;)
The name got me wondering though whether there are other plants named after animal parts, so I Googled it. And yes, it turns out plants have been borrowing names from the animals for some time.
If real botany can give us kangaroo paw, bear’s breeches, and dog’s tooth violet, then I see no reason we shouldn’t also have Wombat Elbows Weed, Pigeon Kneecaps Primrose, Badger Balls Buttercup, Yak Tongue Thistle, and perhaps Walrus Willies Lillies, although that one may require a warning label.
Which makes me wonder how do you become the person who decides plant names? I assume there’s an online course, followed by a brief exam. You would have to have conviction though. You couldn’t name something Duck’s Eyeball Dayflower, have it published in official journals and stuff, and then later decide it actually looks more like a Mole’s Nose. Anyway, something else to look into. I sense big opportunities in the plant-naming field.

A quick snapshot of Filou taken when he relaxed on the porch this afternoon. Sometimes he looks at his paw and seems to be amazed how perfect it is (and how clean) ! :)
Kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos) is a genus of 11 species and multiple subspecies of flowering plants that are native to Australia. These plants have long, slender, arching leaves similar to the foliage of daylilies or amaryllis plants. The unusual tubular flowers grow on stalks in fan-like rows and are covered in velvety fuzz, giving them the appearance of a Kangaroo's paw. The blooms come in an array of shades, including red, orange, yellow, and purple.
I love Kangaroo paw plants because they grow fairly quickly and don’t require much maintenance.
Relaxing on my settee with my cat Ebony perched above me, I was captured by the way she had crossed her paws, one over the other. I managed to take this shot before she moved. I loved the way the sunlight was catching the higher paw and the hairs so delicate and soft. Close up like this you can see the relationship to her bigger family members. I love sharing my life with this beautiful creature.
Have you ever seen a plant more reminiscent of an alien than our Kangaroo Paws? They would be right at home on Little Shop of Horrors. They are native to Australia but are grown commercially in the USA, Israel and Japan.

We had dry weather today and Tofu was happy to return outdoors and meet his feathered friends. When I took this photo he sat on the lawn, apparently lost in thoughts, and held the paw to his cheek like this for ages.

These are the fluffy paws of one of my two kitties. This one is Kiwi.

Tikki is intent on maintaining all 4 of those paws and their jellybean toes. It's as if she knew that the Feb 12 2022 Happy Caturday theme would be "paws." Of course I have a more "just paws" photo that's been waiting for this theme since Sept 2021. What one or two pix will I put in Happy Caturday this week? Guess we will see! … both!

Kangaroo paw is the common name for a number of species, in two genera of the family Haemodoraceae, that are endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. These rhizomatous perennial plants are noted for their unique bird-attracting flowers. The tubular flowers are coated with dense hairs and open at the apex with six claw-like structures, and it is from this paw-like formation that the common name kangaroo paw is derived. The plant is native to south-western Australia. The plants have found their way to California and become popular among garden supply businesses there. 25040
There's too much rain outside. The balcony is wet and I leave paw prints all over. That is why I dried them on the blanket on the sofa (and made Big Human watch soccer on the floor).
Cats are very expressive with their front paws. In this picture, the cat reached out with his front paw after I touched him as he slept.

I thought we were busy before we adopted the very mischievous owner of this energetic little paw from a local rescue in August. Normal life has been on pause since!
This is the kind of photo I wanted to take for last week's theme "Attributes" of the Happy Caturday group but at the time Tofu refused to show me his paw. Yesterday he was distracted and I could point the camera at the paw for a quick photo. When Tofu realised what I was doing he immediately hid the paw again, apparently it is off limits. :)
