For the REALLY uninitiated, the Minister of Railways have decided to totally phase out diesel locomotives from Indian Railways, and has kept the target for total electrification by 2021.
While this has been projected as an environmentally friendly move, the truth is far from that. It is common knowledge that most of India's electrical power is produced by coal-run thermal power plants (stands at sixty percent presently) and the pollutants thrown into the atmosphere are no less polluting than the directly visible pollution from the diesel locomotives. In addition to that, power plants tend to pollute the area where they are located at, whereas there is no localised air pollution when it comes to diesel locomotives.
Also, diesel locomotives produce a much better tractive effort than their electric counterparts and that is one of the reasons almost entire freight traffic in the US is run on diesel traction.
In my opinion, this is just a phase; a politically motivated hogwash to be honest. Diesels are here to stay, and they will.

A surprise find last weekend, SV59CHC was latterly Stagecoach 54065 and carried the purple version of the corporate swoops for East Scotland's X24 service linking Glasgow Airport to Fife. Several, including this one, were painted allover Stagecoach white (a rather dirty white) prior to disposal. Also on site was former sister 54067 (SV59CHF) , latterly an East Scotland vehicle also but still sporting full swoops.
