Spring rainstorms, including one helluva dust devil behind the tallest peak, hover over the Bookcliffs as Amtrak’s westbound California Zephyr flies out of Desert, Utah, on May 4, 2003.
The calendar says spring, but the weather says Christmas at Crescent, Colorado, on April 23, 1999. Amtrak No. 5, the California Zephyr, climbs the Front Range of the Rockies through a snowy wonderland on its westward trip to a hopefully warmer California… Merry Christmas, everyone!

Located in downtown Jasper’s at the train station, Locomotive 6015 is one of 16 mountain-type engines built by the Canadian Locomotive Company of Kingston, Ontario in 1923 and used by Canadian National in fast freight and passenger service. It pulled the Canadian version of the Orient Express. This type of engine could move at 100 miles per hour, and It needed about 10,000 gallons of water and 17 tons of coal. The Locomotive 6015 stands today in downtown Jasper, Alberta Canada as the mark of a time long gone by but never forgotten.

What a glorious sight this was when compared to the sad hulk rotting away in Barry Scrapyard back in March 1968 and what a triumph for the endeavours of preservationists (see adjacent picture).

On a cold winter evening, the Rio Grande Ski Train waits at the Fraser, Colorado, station at dusk on a snowy January 3, 2004. Those warming heaters inside the shelter sure felt good while taking this photo! Soon, the train will depart for Winter Park to pick up a load of exhausted skiers ready to head back to Denver after a day on the slopes.
