I have partnered with the city of Richmond now for 2 years in a Tree Swallow nest box project in 3 city parks. This year we are off to a great start. Most of the nest boxes are occupied with huge increases in occupancy rates. Also most of the swallows are laying 6 eggs this year rather than 4-5 which is a great sign.
Adults can feed up to 7000 insects a day to their young.
This is a small series on a beautiful male Tree Swallow.
Sky — Barbara's Merl — has this lovable habit of putting his paw on the ball to entice you into play. When you show him you're ready, he let's go and sometimes even gives it a forward nudge before getting into his own 'I'm ready', characteristic border collie pre-pounce pose. He's a dream dog.
Here, in this extreme crop, he's between Paul's legs waiting for me to give him that 'ready' sign :-)))

He's my little brother - even if he's taller than me now, and can be a little shite... but I still love him and would face a bloody dementor for him. So of course when he wants to have a day of fun and goofing off, who am I to say no?
A break from my Newfoundland posts. Earlier this year, I visited a small pond in rural Alberta that had a number of eared grebes nesting on it. This image shows one of the pair sitting on the eggs and its mate patrolling nearby. For the time I was there, one or the other would regularly go off and find nest material (often stealing from other floating nests) and tucking into the mass they had already built.
If a a third grebe came by, they might get chased. More often than not, one of the pair would be off eating or gathering material, so the one on the eggs would posture and vocalize with the end result being the intruder grabbing something and swimming off quickly. The bird on the eggs was reluctant to leave them untended to chase another grebe.
A male Common Tern passes his gift of a small fish to his partner to help strengthen their bond as a pair.

My niece and I were sitting in a park on the Maumee Bay eating gas station fish and chips when a big bird made a screech as it flew by. It turned out to be a young Bald Eagle, just getting it's adult colors, and it landed on that branch to eat its own fish dinner. This is cropped a good bit, but it was sure fun to have this happen.
My partner recently told me that he thought it was so cool when he met me when we were teenagers that I had a copy of Palace Music's Arise Therefore. Nearly 28 years later, we're still together. Music is magic!

The fishermen on the Li River have had a centuries long partnership with the cormorants that help them fish. Cormorant fishing has taken place in China for over 1000 years. The fishermen light a lantern at the bow of their bamboo raftst to attract the fish and tie a line near the base of the bird's throat to prevent the birds from swallowing larger fish. When the birds are brought back aboard the bamboo rafts, the fish are retrieved and shared with the cormorants.

An exquisitely patterned male Wild Indigo Duskywing Skipper butterfly stands ready to defend his territory and on alert to attract a willing dance partner.
Note: Males (among other features) have hind tibial tufts, or hair-like structures on the rear legs, as indicated.
Not particularly abundant, but becoming more common.
Pair of Green Flycatchers. Both were hunting bugs from the tree branch during capture. Are they looking at same prey? Can't say.
