Lieu de culte important, Montmartre est choisi pour accueillir la basilique du Sacré-Cœur après les évènements de la Commune (1871). Sa construction débute en 1875 et dure plus d'un demi-siècle. Son achèvement officiel date de 1923. Aujourd’hui, la basilique est l’un des lieux les plus visités de la capitale. L’édifice ne ressemble à nul autre : couleur blanche, une hauteur de 83 mètres, un immense porche à deux étages, cinq dômes (un grand dôme circulaire entouré de ses quatre lanternons) et un campanile qui abrite la plus grosse cloche de France (19 tonnes). L’intérieur est orné de la plus grande mosaïque de France. La crypte et le dôme se visitent aussi. Monument emblématique de Paris, la basilique du Sacré-Cœur est ouverte à la visite tous les jours et gratuitement. Very impressive urban vista, Paris skyline, after Frankfurt, is easily the best in Europe. Note the tags on the chimney, foreground right, that's a common sight in Paris, I wonder how do these guys get up there? If you do this sort of thing or know who does, let me know, I wouldn't mind doing some rooftopping myself (for photographic purposes, of course, not tagging).

The crowning glory of the Belle Époque in Paris - the wonderfully over-the-top Pont Alexandre III. Named after Tsar Alexander III, who had concluded the Franco-Russian Alliance in 1892. The foundation stone was laid by Nicholas II in 1896.
This is easily the most famous bridge in Paris and always haeving with tourists. Even though it was raining I still had to wait good ten minutes for the crowds to clear. Still managed to cut off the top of the lamp. Oh well...

So, this was about as good as it got with the light on the evening I went up the Montparnasse Tower, but I always know it's something of a lottery when it comes to the weather so I take the rough with the smooth ...
Once upon a time this place was a stone quarry, open air slaughterhouse and depository of sewage (sounds charming) described as - "spread(ing) infectious emanations not only to the neighboring areas, but, following the direction of the wind, over the entire city" and which was also close to the notorious Gibbet of Montfaucon where bodies of executed criminals were displayed and which in itself was a pretty impressive structure inspiring many an artist with macabre inclinations...But then Monsieur Haussmann turned up and created this wonderful park. Way to go, man!
