A full restoration and service of an image uploaded 13 years ago finds this new offering looking not too bad at all - if shunters are your kind of thing.
The image was taken at Gloucester Central station - so named because Gloucester Eastgate station (to which it was connected by a long footbridge) was open at the time and hosted stopping trains on the Birmingham - Bristol route. Sadly Eastgate station, along with the Tuffley Loop on which it sat, was closed on 1st December 1975, just a few weeks after this shot was taken.
Of course the reason for the visit was to bag a few shots of Eastgate before closure, but I didn't turn my nose up at the GWR-heritage Central station either, and particularly this shot of class 08 unit 08826 at the head of a varied and interesting rake of parcels vans.
Based on research, but more on the expertise of folk who commented on the original upload, here's my understanding of the first four vehicles.......
1. ex GW Siphon G
2. ex LNER Full Brake (with Gresley bogies)
3. ex LNER *CCT
4 ex SR *CCT
*CCT - Covered Carriage Truck, used to carry motor vehicles and/or parcels.
With the closure of Eastgate station and transfer of traffic to Central station, the station name was simplified to just 'Gloucester'. Befitting the image the city and railway wanted to present to visitors, the station was rebuilt in 1977 with a new building housing the ticket office, passenger waiting facilities, and refreshment area. The platform was extended too to 1977ft (603m). Numbered platform 1 and platform 2 at different sections, it's long enough to accommodate two intercity express trains - and, as I can testify, walking from one end to the other requires a very good reason and a degree of commitment!
Goes to full-screen pretty well.

One of the first images I uploaded to Flickr 15 years ago almost to the day, has been given a minor wash and brush up for this latest outing.
Sulzer class 25 'Rat' unit 25107 is captured rolling in to Crewe station with an unidentified mixed vans working. With the ex-GWR 'Siphon G' just behind the loco, and the pair of BR GUVs behind that, the working is almost certainly a parcels or mail train.
At the time Crewe station was something of a honey-pot for rail enthusiasts - all mainline expresses were locomotive hauled, mail and parcels in transit often cluttered the platforms, the station was busy enough to employ at least one class 08 shunter on duty (and often two), the station layout was still haphazard, interesting, and very photogenic. Of course, this was all before the £14m track rationalisation project in the mid-1980s which saw five platforms taken out of service on the west side of the station, and the approaches realigned for 80mph through-running with faster alignments for stopping trains. It's interesting to note too that the class 40s, while widespread in the North and in Scotland, were long synonymous with Crewe and, at the start of 1978, 184 of the 200 built were still in service.
In this shot the complexity of the track layout pre-rationalisation is evident, including quite a bit of bullhead rail too.
Processed to try retain the filmic feel of the day, the original upload has been deleted.
Update: My Locoshed books from 77/78 suggest 25107 was a Toton-allocated unit at the time, so I'm wondering if this was a parcels train from the East Midlands?

I thought that I might try a slightly different approach to processing and would welcome any feedback!

Another shot from the negative strip sees me at Guide Bridge and catches class 40 no. 40030 leaving the loop with what looks to be a parcels train. If you look carefully down the side you can still see the bolt-holes which carried the nameplate 'Scythia' - an adornment that was sadly removed when the locos were downgraded from top-link services on the West Coast Mainline post electrification.
If my ID skills are working properly I can count five ex-Southern Railway parcels stock vehicles in the consist (S-vans I believe). While it wasn't unusual to see them in 1977 they were in the process of being phased out, and a few years later were very rare indeed.
I'm intrigued by what I assume to be a driver walking trackside towards me - it's possible he has just signed off his shift at the stabling point out of sight on the right, or he may have been part of a crew change on 40030 while she was looped.
A day when I probably wished I had something wider than a 35mm focal length lens in the kit bag, I did at least manage to include three of the cars on the left - to my uneducated eye they look like a Ford Escort, Ford Cortina, and a Renault - but I'll take any corrections.
Judging by the shadows I'm guessing the shot was taken early afternoon.

Rail Operations Group / Europhenix 37884 "Cepheus" provides some English Electric muscle atop ROG 'Orion' units 768001 and 319373 (326001) on 3Q41 Shieldmuir - Willesden PRDC via Warrington RMT.
The ROG "Orion" trains have been running since early December, until yesterday piloted by a class 57. Its something I've been meaning to get out for before the units take the rains solo but until now hadn't bothered. It takes something special to get me out of bed handy during the festive season but not knowing how long the tractor would stay on this I decided to make the move.
Not one of my finest efforts with poor light and a complete balls up on my part getting the subject nicely in frame, but after some considerable processing and a bit of a crop I think i've got it to something good enough to share. Serving as a record of when everyone's Amazon orders experienced some proper classic haulage!

Brean, near Weston-super-Mare
It was the long very hot summer of 1976 and even by September it was still very warm for our week in Weston-super-Mare. Class 31 31261 (BR) is seen heading towards Taunton with a parcels train. We returned from holiday to Halifax to find stand-pipes along our road!

47201 leaves York at the head of 1V88 12:43 Newcastle to Plymouth vans. 18/11/87. Although I went on the spot near Holgate Bridge where this was taken a few times, I didn't take that many shots from there, really. Perhaps I should have done. All gone now anyway, as it's palisaded off and under the wires.

Class 83 No. 83014 (ex-E3099) speeds through Lichfield Trent Valley on 29th October 1977 heading a down parcels working. The station had been 'rationalised' with a rather tatty booking office of timber construction replacing the original station buildings. as a reminder of grander times, note how the steps to the high level platforms retain their overall roof. There is a story to this picture, as it was taken from the signal box which then was situated between the up and down fast lines. I was having a 'session' on the platforms when approached by the official looking gentleman in full uniform and peaked cap. My expectation was to be turfed off the station, but to my utter astonishment all he said was "do I want to visit the signal box". Now you do not turn down invitations such as that, and the shot of 83014 taken from the corner window of the box was the result. Thank you that gentleman! ...on an evening southbound parcels train in 1957.
At the end of 1940 and early in 1941 a batch of 12 GWR Castle Class locos were renamed after RAF aircraft to boost national moral and to honour the types of aircraft which flew in the 'Battle of Britain'.
This loco was was built in 1938 and initially named 'Devizes Castle' then renamed to honour the Vickers Wellington Bomber exactly 2 years later.
In turn the Wellington Bomber was named after Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington [the Iron Duke] who was twice Prime Minister and also the conqueror of Napoleon.
Several British locomotives were named Wellington or Iron Duke after the great man of the 19th Century but unfortunately this loco did not survive and was condemned over five years before the end of steam on British Railways, being scrapped at Cashmore's yard (Newport) at the end of 1962.
26 027 idles away with a train of parcel vans on the south loop siding. Since the redevelopment on Edinburgh Waverley station and electrification this goods loop is now platform 10. The class 26 is no doubt standing in for the resident class 08 that was usually employed on such duties back then.
26 027 was finally withdrawn on 26/07/91 and after periods stored at Eastfield and latterly Perth it was put up for sale by BR and sold to the Bodmin & Wenford Railway in September 1993. Sadly the sale never went through and in January 1995 26 027 made its final journey to M.C. Metals Ltd at Springburn being disposed of the same month.
