I've always really liked big cities. Before our recent trip to New York I started wondering what it is that makes them so appealing. Big cities have a mysterious way about them, especially a mega-city like New York. There is so much to see and do, there is seemingly something interesting and entertaining at the end of each block. At the start of a visit into the city there is a sense of mystery and uncertainty about what experiences you are about to encounter. In New York, the bright lights and skyscrapers that make up Times Square are a perfect representation of that big city feeling of excitement.
This beautiful detail of the gilded entrance way on 1501 Broadway in the same edifice that housed the Paramount Theater where the crowds came to see the world premier of the King, Elvis Presley’s first movie “Love Me Tender” in 1956 and the Fab Four, the Beatles whose first United States tour ended here in September 1964 where they performed for no fee donating all the proceeds to United Cerebral Palsy and Retarded Children’s Service. In 1956 a giant cardboard Elvis was placed over the theaters marquis 2 ½ weeks before the premier and covered by a white sheet with a large question mark to promote Presley’s movie as Paramount leveraged his already meteoric accent to fame to fuel interest in their new production.
1501 Broadway, located in the heart of Times Square is known as the Paramount Building, was built back between 1926 to 1927 by Paramount Pictures one of the major players in the motion picture business in the 1920’s as their Art Deco/Beaux-Arts styled headquarters, costing 13.5 million dollars, Times Square’s tallest building at 391 feet, 33 stories with its own observation deck (long gone). Designed by the firm of Architects, Rapp & Rapp, George Rapp who would consult on Radio City Music Hall, the building features a beautiful clock tower and an illuminated glass globe at its pinnacle which was clearly visible way into New Jersey but is now engulfed by much taller skyscrapers that line the Times Square district. The beautiful gilded entrance ways led to the opulent and magnificent 3,600 person theater which premiered movies of Hollywood greats such as Fred Astaire, Mae West, Gary Cooper and Bing Crosby. Regular live performers that graced the stage included Hoboken’s own Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Jack Benny. The end of 1964 marked the end of live performances and premiers at the Paramount, the aforementioned Beatles Charity Concert was probably one of the last to grace that stage. I’m told that in 1967 all the movies stopped as well and the theater was completely dismantled & gutted, much of the space taken over by the New York Times.
At the beginning of the 21st century, WWE did extensive work, opening a night club, restaurant and store in the building, but alas they departed because of financial reasons. The Hard Rock Café has since taken over the WWE space to create a unique Times Square location relocating from their 57th Street location where they’ve turned the night club into a performance venue once again, albeit much smaller than the original 3,600 person theater. The Hard Rock Café which is a world-wide Rock n Roll themed restaurant/resort/casino franchise which originated in England each location features remarkable unique memorabilia from Rock n Roll history seemed like the fitting tenant for a edifice which had a lot of modern music history attached to it. The interior lobby has been restored to its former opulence by the Hard Rock as can be seen in this image, the details outside and inside are clearly visible as well as the modern large screen televisions.

Times Square is a major commercial intersection in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. The extended Times Square area, also called the Theatre District, consists of the blocks between Sixth and Eighth Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from south to north, making up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan.
Formerly named Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in April 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly erected Times Building, which is now called One Times Square and is the site of the annual ball drop on New Year's Eve. Times Square, nicknamed 'The Crossroads of the World' and 'The Great White Way', has achieved the status of an iconic world landmark and is a symbol of New York City and the United States.
The northern triangle of Times Square is technically Duffy Square, dedicated in 1937 to Chaplain Francis P. Duffy of New York City's "Fighting 69th" Infantry Regiment; a memorial to Duffy is located there, along with a statue of George M. Cohan, and the TKTS discount theatre tickets booth. The stepped red roof of the TKTS booth also provides seating for various events. The Duffy Statue and the square were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
Times Square has been featured countless times in literature, on television, in films – including the 1980 film Times Square, which featured a punk rock/new wave soundtrack – in music videos and recently in video games. An immediately recognizable setting, Times Square has been frequently attacked and destroyed in a number of movies, including Knowing, when a solar flare destroys New York City, Deep Impact, when a tsunami created from a meteor impact destroys New York City, Stephen King's The Stand, where the intersection is overcome by total anarchy, and Transformers; Revenge of the Fallen. Films have also employed the opposite tactic, depicting the typically bustling area as eerily still, such as in Vanilla Sky, as well as the post-apocalyptic I Am Legend, in which Will Smith and his dog go hunting for deer in the deserted urban canyon. Times Square was also depicted in the 2011 movie, New Year's Eve.

This view from 11th Avenue is similar to the view from Weehawken, NJ, but this closer view provides a look at the smaller interior buildings.

This view of the Paramount Building peeking through between One Times Square and 4 Times Square caught my eye while walking on 42nd Street. I took quite a few shots as the video screens rotated through their ads and the light atop the Paramount Building happened to turn red while I was shooting. It's normally a yellow/white color, but I prefer the red color.

In 1926, Paramount Pictures, one of the major American motion picture companies, built its headquarters along with a cinematic theatre right in Times Square. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest building in Times Square and its illuminated glass globe could be seen as far as New Jersey.
Paramount Pictures Logo: mountain top surrounded by starsNew York City views. Times Square from 41st Story [of the] Conti
Recognizable to all, the Paramount Pictures logo features a mountaintop surrounded by 22 stars. Apparently, each star symbolized a real flesh and blood actor put under contract by film producer Adolph Zukor to work for Paramount Pictures. This idea is recalled in the design of the clocks, where the stars are symbolically surrounding the ”mountain-like” Paramount building.
In May of 1926, the cornerstone was laid by Mayor Jimmy Walker. He placed three copper boxes containing the front pages of New York’s morning newspapers, three five-dollar gold coins, two Paramount feature films, and newsreels of Admiral Byrd’s polar expedition. Thomas Edison sent a letter of congratulations.
Big bands became a staple of the Paramount, featuring on its stage orchestras of Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and Frank Sinatra would later grace the Paramount stage.

Sadly, the Paramount closed its doors in 1964. As the space was converted to offices, all traces of the lavish movie palace were obliterated. The mammoth organ was moved to a Wichita, Kansas convention center. The familiar marquee that once held the over-sized cut-out of Elvis Presley and had announced the movies of Gary Cooper and Rudolph Valentino was removed and destroyed, and the chandeliers were sold.

In 2000, a large section of the Broadway office building was leased by the World Wrestling Federation, which recreated the famous arch and marquee with the Paramount logo restored and developed the space into WWF New York, a themed club and restaurant.

The Paramount Building restoration included the reconstruction of the four clocks and the illuminated globe at the top of the building. The Globe was painted black during WWII to hide it from possible enemy attack and remained that way until 2000 when it was re-lit again for the first time in over 50 years.
The WWE operation closed in 2003, and the location then became home to the Hard Rock Cafe.
The 33-story Paramount Building is an iconic presence in the Broadway Theatre District. Every day at 1:45 pm and 7:45 pm the giant clock atop the building chimes, alerting Broadway theater-goers that they have 15 minutes before the curtain call.
We stopped by the St. Cloud Rooftop at the Knickerbocker after the ESB shoot. It's a pretty cool view of Times Square, but the prices on the menu are fairly steep. The hotel has New Year's Eve packages that must cover a big percentage of the hotel's annual revenue. You can see the rooftop has a front row view of the Waterford Crystal Ball atop One Times Square.

One Times Square - The Times Tower - New York City.
I stayed almost a week in Times Square while in NYC and I think it's the place to be when in the city, not only for convenience, but for the overall excitement and fun atmosphere. It's all of New York and America in a nutshell. I think this photograph has Americana written all over it, not only for the flag waving in Duffy Square, but also for Lady Liberty on the top marquee of the tower (the marquee images change every few seconds so it was nice to get that in there).
The building in the middle, 1 Times Square or the Times Tower, is the site where the famous glittering ball drops for the countdown to the New Year. This tradition started in 1907, when the tower opened as the headquarters of the New York Times. The ball drop was a celebration of that milestone, and was accompanied by New Year's fireworks.

There aren't many older buildings left in Times Square, so the Paramount Building stands out. I always try to get a shot with the globe atop the building illuminated in red, but it happens infrequently. I happened to be looking at the building when I saw the light turn red here. See my prior post for the typical color of the globe.
