One late afternoon, this pair of Nanday Parakeets were part of a raucous crowd of Nandays that "cleared out" (chased away) all of the native birds at Celery Fields, Florida.

Nanday Parakeets are one of the many exotic, invasive species of birds, plants and other animals found in Florida. (For more information, click the picture in the first comment below.)

This is a Monk Parakeet we saw in Barcelona. We saw a few in Athens as well.

Coming from the north we had not seen them before and we loved them.

But they seem to be a menace in the countries they settle in. It is considered an invasive species 🤔

Parakeets occur worldwide in warm regions; they are abundant from India and Sri Lanka to Australia and the Pacific Islands, throughout Southeast Asia, and in tropical America. Typically they form large flocks and may be serious pests in grainfields. Most species lay four to eight eggs in a tree hole. Dozens of colourful kinds are kept as pets. All are highly active and need much room; most are pugnacious—notably when paired—toward other birds; and a few become good, though small-voiced, mimics. Many colour varieties and intergeneric hybrids are known in the wild as well as in aviaries.

Layard's parakeet (Psittacula calthrapae) is a parrot which is a resident endemic breeder in Sri Lanka. The common name of this bird commemorates the British naturalist Edgar Leopold Layard; his first wife, Barbara Anne Calthrop, whom he married in 1845, is commemorated in the specific epithet.

Also known as the Quaker parrot. Thousands of monk parakeets were imported to the United States between the 1960s and the 1980s as pets. Many escaped and since then they have established colonies across the U.S. The Monk is one of the few temperate-zone parrots, making it more able than most to survive cold climates. Monmouth, NJ.

The Rose-ringed Parakeet Parakeets have now also reached my hometown. Last summer I saw (and heard) them for the first time in our neighborhood. This week they came by regularly,
