A New York Beauty block for ~yolanda. She requested yellow and aqua/turquoise.

The pattern is from the book "Paper Piecing with Alex Anderson".

I wanted to test out the pattern I plan on using to make my partner's pouch in the Mouthy Stitches swap (don't worry partner, this pouch is for me, you are still getting the animals.)

The pattern I used is the Perfect Zip Bags pattern by Elizabeth Hartman. I made the largest one in style C. It finishes at 9.5" high and 9" wide.

The rainbow curved piece is paper pieced using a technique described in an artcile called "Freeform Fillers" by Gail Garber in the July 2011 issue of American Quilter magazine (the technique is also described in her book, "Flying Colors – Design Quilts with Freeform Shapes & Flying Geese.") I used the foundation as printed in the magazine along with the templates provided for the background pieces to make a 6" block which I then pieced into the front of the pouch.

The natural fabric is Robert Kaufman Essex Linen and the grey is a Kona solid. The bakground of the rainbow piece is a print from the line "Hometown" by Sweetwater for Moda Fabrics. The rainbow bits are all from my scrap box.

I love the size and shape of this pouch as well as how much structure it has (I used canvas for the interlining and applied a lightweight fusible to the back of the completed exterior pieces.)

Now onto your pouch partner!

This my entry into the Modern Mini Challenge.

Title: "Rainbow Compass" made using the pattern "Sunshine Rose Garden" from the July/August 2007 issue of Quilter's Newsletter.

Fabrics: Robert Kaufman Kona Solids. 64 different colours plus white (you can see a photo of the fabrics I used here.

Backing: Robert Kaufman Kona Solid in white. You can see a photo of the back here.

Binding: "Stripe in Bright" from the line Remix by Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman

Quilting: I used a monofilimant thread with white thread in the bobbin (Connecting Threads Essential Cotton Thread) to outline each of the compass points using my walking foot. I then used white thread on both the top and bottom along with my free motion foot to quilt a tiny pebble in the background (based loosely on Leah Day's Pebbling Tutorial. There are closeup photos of the quilting on the front here and here and on the back here and here.

Batting: Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 Batting.

Finished Size: 20" by 20".

Started: February 8, 2012

Completed: March 1, 2012.

I bought a used copy the magzine I used when I stumbled across the foundations for the pattern on the Quilter's Newsletter website -- I knew that I wanted to try the pattern and neeeded the rest of it to do so. You can see what the quilt in the pattern looks like here.

I thought that a rainbow colour palette for the compass would be perfect but I somehow needed to get 64 different Konas that worked well together. I do have a Kona colour card but it's still hard to pick out the perfect colours and see what they look like next to each other. So, I ordered one of each of the store-made Kona jelly rolls offered by Mad About Patchwork. I then took the bright, colour wheel colours from those rolls and lined the strips up in the order of the colour wheel. I then took out strips that didn't seem to fit until I was left with 64 strips. The compass points are small enough that one 2.5"xWOF strip is more than enough for each compass point.

Some fun facts:

- The compass is paper-pieced. The centre circle was inserted using Dale Fleming's Six-Minute Circle technique. The compass is pieced into the background using a standard curved piecing technique.

- There are 64 compass points, each is a different colour of Kona solid.

- The compass has a total of 184 pieces.

- It took approximately 8 hours to piece the top and 6 hours to quilt it. I have pieced and quilted lap-sized quilts in less time than it took to make this mini!

- While quilting I used 5 bobbins of thread.

- I made two quilt tops simultaneously so that I would have a backup if I screwed something up (the total piecing time for both tops together was 12 hours.) I am probably going to use the second compass in a larger quilt.

The theme was low volume so this is my interpretation - they looked like trees to me so I had to add some green in there! Wonky triangles pattern by Owen's Olivia. Tag on the side says "Love much" and I put hidden zip on the back. Fingers crossed my lovely recipient likes it in real life!

It's not exactly a pinwheel, but it has the right sense of movement and direction, no?

And that, my friends, is why we learn to paper-piece. WHEW.

Pattern here.

This week-end I did my first paper piecing, a gnome and mushroom. It's not perfect, but I'm pretty pleased at my first attemt. Though, when I was done, I realized that both pieces are opposite to the pattern. I haven't figured out why that happened. Does any seasoned quilter know why mine came out this way?? For future ones I'll probably have to figure it out since it might ruin the pattern if everything comes out opposite.

It's all done and ready to ship! I hope my partner loves it as much as I loved making it. It is very different from what I normally do.

A happy robin - a TartanKiwi pattern :)

Sometimes the rainbows match up and sometimes they don't :) Inspired by my partner's mosaic and favorites is this little New York Beauty mini for her to hang on her sewing room wall. The template is from Donna Duquette for anyone who's interested in giving it a go.

This one I started December 2020 and finished a few weeks ago.

When you can't get out to photograph you sew!

I was so lucky to test this pattern for Juliet at Tartankiwi, and he is just so majestic! He measures 24x24. I love everything about him! I densely quilted his face and mane on the left side, and just used stitch in the ditch for the mane on the right side.

Pillow #3 for my Pillow A Month Challenge. I totally fell in love with Krista's free pieced flowers in her improv design! While mine aren't near as fun as hers, I'm happy with them and I have them to look at every day now. And as always, I had fun with the back of the pillow too. You can see that side on my blog: freezeframe03.blogspot.com/2012/02/pillow-3-my-personal-p...

A wedding present for Trisha. Congrats!!

I tried to pick colors to match a granny square blanket she started to make a while ago, sort of as a way to push her to finish it, and keep it for herself ;)

This was a stretch for me!! I hope you like it Muriel!!

I got up at 5 to get ready for work, then found out I wasn't going in. So I had 2 hours to myself and decided to work on my hexie throw some more. It's been a while since I picked up this project but it was nice to work on it again.

partner, it's finished! I really, really hope you like it.
