We watched these fellows on South Africa's Sabi Sands Reserve, built like tanks, lowering their heads and slamming into one another. Their reinforced foreheads (their "boss") acting as natural helmets as their horns twisted and pushed in contests of strength, and probably stubbornness. Thankfully, it all seemed more ritual than rage; a bit like me and the mates arm-wrestling at the pub to prove us oldies have still got it. 😉
Cape buffalo are members of Africa's legendary Big Five, alongside lions, elephants, leopards and rhinos, and they arguably have the reputation to match. Powerful, unpredictable and not renowned for their patience, they're often regarded as one of the continent's most dangerous animals.
Then came this moment.
"Relaxed" and "pampered" don't usually make the list of words used to describe these guys, but these formidable beasts suddenly pressed pause to enjoy the deluxe oxpecker treatment and a scratch. Isn't there something universally relatable about having a friend who knows exactly where that impossible-to-reach itch is and is willing to give it a proper scratch? Judging by the expressions on their faces, the oxpeckers had absolutely nailed it, and the buffalo knew how to hit that really itchy spot. The next round of head-butting could wait a few more minutes.
We don't have many Oxpeckers hanging around the pubs here, it's usually annoying seagulls trying to steal your hamburger & chips, but if a mate wants to arm wrestle in future, I'll ask him for a back scratch.
This was just another of those special moments on the plains of South Africa that I feel incredibly fortunate to have witnessed ... and even luckier to have photographed.

The owner of this boat clearly puts in a lot of time caring for it. What better place to show it off than the Canals of Venice?
A setting looking to the north while taking in views across this west Texas landscape present from a roadside pullout along Texas State Highway 54. Based on the PeakVisor app on my iPhone, identified points and peaks are Shumard Peak, Guadalupe Peak, El Capitan, and Hunter Peak, from left to right.
While walking around and exploring the Bisti Badlands with a view looking to the east to some eroded formations present in this part of Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area. What I wanted to capture with this image was to align myself with the hoodoo formation to my front and bring out a pattern or grouping. The rest was finding a balance with the hoodoo formation and using the blue skies and clouds as a backdrop to highlight this formation.
