We went to some new places on our recent road trip. One of the best was Theordore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. Unique and beautiful badlands-type landscape with not only buffalo roaming the highways, but wild horses. This guy seemed to be striding with purpose as I captured a quick shot through our car window.
Just coincidental, but I'm struck by how similar the colors here are to the rusty trash can I posted yesterday.
Lily is trained to canter as soon as she sees the camera! When I get the shot I want I'll say that'll do and she stops. I've had friends come over to watch who are quite amazed at how well she listens to me. I never tire of seeing her flow through the snow so effortlessly. It is like she is ready to fly...

Meet wild stallion known as Apache. He is a satellite stallion in a huge band of wild horses. In this position his job is to help keep the mares safe and to keep them from being stolen by other stallions. He is very good at his job. Here he was chasing off a group of bachelor stallions trying to snake out a couple mares.

Sunset fast approaching...dust motes in the air...Dan (Paint) and Piney (White Quarterhorse) enjoying their dinner.
A horse will always alert you to things on the trail if you pay close attention to his ears. Chief let me know there was hikers below singing, they weren't even aware we were above them. it was a cool feeling as we watched them march by, almost like a mountain lion's perspective :)...I guess they were letting all the bears know they were coming.... I'm so blessed to ride here. I only hope we can protect this land for the enjoyment of generations to come. I wonder what it will look like in 100 years.
Well I am on the move again. I am now at a wonderful farm (house sitting till Nov).... yeh! I can bring my horse. She is the dark one in front. The boss of Maggie.. but not me. Maggie is my sisters 3 year old mare. Maggie is so funny. She is just like a curious puppy and always getting into things, wanting to smell it and put it in her mouth. and a real sweety.
I have ridden Cricket a few times and feels good to be in the saddle.
Having internet problems and sometimes I cannot even connect.

Now when my friends call they say "So where are you now?" Understandable :)
How great it is to let go of everything and just run with the wind!

Riding the Arizona Badlands: Spence and His Trusted Paint Horse
Deep in the rugged badlands of Arizona, surrounded by towering saguaros and sun-baked desert terrain, Spence rides his striking paint horse Donald. This classic cowboy scene captures the timeless bond between rider and horse as they navigate the dramatic landscapes near Phoenix. From rocky washes to golden-hour light filtering through cholla and ocotillo, these rides embody the spirit of the American Southwest – freedom, solitude, and a deep connection with the land.

Approaching the Navajo Bridges on AZ Hwy 89A, I saw a group of horses grazing for breakfast. In the old days before PC and the WOKE crowd, we called these 'Indian Ponies' and that was a compliment. The Native Americans valued their horses and bred them for stamina and beauty.
In the background you can see why the formations in the area are called Vermillion Cliffs.

A romp in the mud made this girl very spirited! Or vice-versa...
Textures are my own.
I took this back in 2015 and finally did something with it. I'm so glad I did--her owner contacted me and said she wanted the image because the horse is now ill. Please send good thoughts and prayers up for Dicey, that she can live a long and comfortable life.

Buckshot and Rusty are checking each other out. I think that Rusty has decided it is okay for the little fellow to join the herd.
My neighbor added a horse to his little herd and so far he is still trying to find his exact place in that herd. Here he is walking along the ridgeline to join them at the hay feeder, but he won't really join them.... he will hang out several yards away. Sometimes it's hard fitting in.....

Who doesn't love a long horseback ride through diverse landscapes, ending up camping for the night ? That's what was on the ranch's schedule this week ! We had a few reservations for the hike so we left at six.
In the morning at 8 o'clock sharp, the hikers arrived with the necessary, that is to say bottles of water, sandwiches and that's it! The rest was provided by the ranch. We have a large tent that can hold four people, and we had taken another smaller one for us, the two organizers. Without forgetting the food for the horses, of course !
We made the presentations of the horses to the riders then we started to prepare them, they had already been fed and were waiting, like us, to leave for the adventure.
9:30 am we left ! We had taken two mules to transport the bulk of the load, the rest had been placed in the saddlebags of the horses.
We started with a magnificent forest then we crossed mountains and valleys, countryside and rivers, where we stopped to eat around noon. After we all rested for two good hours, we left around 2:30 p.m., on the way to our next destination, the campsite where we will sleep the night before leaving the next morning.
We arrived there around 7 p.m., of course we took a few breaks because 4 hours on horseback is a long time, even for them ! We hitched up the horses and unsaddled them before setting up the camp. The tents were up and the business installed, we only had to make a temporary paddock for the horses, so that they could move, eat and sleep during the night, there was a small stream where they could quench their thirst. .
The campfire had been lit and we had settled around, ready to tell stories while enjoying good roasted marshmallows! It promises to be a good evening !

"The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears." ~Arabian Proverb~
Another sweet surprise. Never in my life had I seen a horse with blue eyes. One day while out driving country roads looking for some interesting shots I spied this young horse in the field with several other horses. I am very VERY fond of paints so I stopped to take her photo. Some how she knew I liked her as she, and only she, turned and walked toward me. It is then I noticed her beautiful blue eyes. I was hooked. She was so beautiful. I went back several times that summer to visit and she always came to me when none of the other horses paid any attention to me at all. By Autumn she was gone and I have never seen her again. I hope she is in a happy home where someone loves her very much!

To see the wind's power, the rain's cleansing and the sun's radiant life, one need only to look at the horse. ~Author Unknown
One of my all time favorite finds ... a blue-eyed beauty. I have only seen this once in all my life.
