between the boardwalk
and breakwater, shoal
farther out, sun going
down, a few gulls
prospecting the beach
along the jetty, some
wisenheimer in a blue
souped-up Chevy in
the parking lot, his
music cranked up,
a primal distress cry,
one might think, but
as the girl glides past
on her paddleboard
she seems oblivious
to all but the small wake
she cuts through the blue,
deeper than the sky
which glows with last
light, her rhythmic stroke:
reach and pull, stroke
and glide, almost sensual
as the waves break
and purl against the reef:
the scene could be
a painting if you were
not so mesmerized,
had brush, paint and
canvas and knew how.

Paddleboarding - it been around longer than you think.
Ships Artist John Webber accompanied Captain James Cook to the Sandwich Islands in 1778, and in the lower left foreground of his 1781 engraving is depicted a paddleboarder surfer.

……….This couple went into the water just as we arrived at Whitesands Bay at St Davids, hime swimming with a marker buoy and she on the paddle board - they went around St Davids head so clearly well practiced (and fit!)……..Alan:-)

Another day at Ocean Reef Marina. I saw this lone paddleboarder in the Marina. Its an attractive place to paddleboard as its safe and out of the wind. I really liked the contrast between the small figure on the paddleboard and the boardwalk covered in sleeping seagulls. It highlights how peaceful the day was. The flying bird really added to the image.

I realized later I should have mentioned that this event was a fundraiser for the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County.
While standup paddleboarding has its foundations in surfing, as it uses a paddle to propel the board it is technically a paddlesport. There are many types of SUP paddling including surfing, touring, racing, fitness paddling, and SUP Yoga and whitewater standup paddleboarding. SUP is the latest craze in watersports. You know what would have been really impressive? If I was doing yoga down there on paddleboard with all those ladies WHILE flying the quadcopter to get this shot. Can you imagine? Well… that's a recipe for disaster I'm sure… I almost fell over while standing over on the nearby beach!

Heat from sunlight can make the gas and air inside the foam overheat and swell, which creates pressure on the fiberglass and epoxy skin. The fiberglass will then bubble, crack or split, or layers may peel away from the foam core (this is called delamination).

It was a very bold move, although they were waiting for a small waves. My son and granddaughter practiced paddleboarding while on vacation. As always, she had to do everything her dad did, so he had to start teaching her.
