Packagings of the World is a packaging design archive showcasing the best, most interesting and creative packaging work worldwide. We will try to make the archive as digestible and as possible with less text, like they say, pictures speaks a thousand words!

I created a number of cat illustrations based on the (for me) usual set of limitations such ass restricted amount of colours, consistent line thickness and a fixed 15º rotation increment on any angle throughout the illustrations. Within these limitations I carefully looked at the balance between the character and quirkiness of the cats without making them overly cutsie.

In a second fase I applied these illustrations to a set of fictional packaging designs and promotional items to give an idea of the potential scope of the artwork. The selected typeface and the minimal designgrid used for these items was carefully selected and based on the design principals of the illustrations themselves. This ensures a cohesive and robust system that can easily be extended to a large number of different products such as canned or dry cat food, kitty litter toys, … Next to that the hole concept can be adapted to fit different species such as dogs, birds, rabbits, … as well.

Early on in 2010, Davison designed wraparound packing for a line of seat cushion products. These products first hit the store shelves of a big box retailer in February.

  

Scanpack 2012 - Northern Europe's no. 1 packaging exhibition

For this fictional brand of frozen fish products I created a series of stylised illustrations. I’ve later used these in a series of packaging designs and marketing materials. Using illustrations in stead of photography helps to set the brand apart from it’s competitors and supports the concept of a healthy and sustainable product.

The Modern Nose is a wine aroma kit that helps sommeliers and wine enthusiasts learn to recognize different flavors and aromas in wine.

I am really fond of "Shelf Appeal", a journal relating to packaging, merchandising and display that appeared either side of World War 2; it's post-war reincarnation saw it as "Sales Appeal". This, the August 1938, issue is fascinating for several reasons; not only are the adverts of interest but it includes the results of the annual British Packaging Awards.

 

The winner of the major award for packaging, display and advertising was the York based confectionery company of Rowntree's. Various brands and lines are discussed such as the "Black Magic" chocolate selection, introduced in 1933, and these include some names still with use such as Smarties and Aero.

 

The main designers of their packaging and display, as well as major elements of their advertising and publicity, was the famous agency of J. Walter Thompson Co. Ltd. and the various manufacturers and printers of their cartons and wrappers included John Waddington Ltd., of Leeds, Ben Johnston Ltd. of York and Bolton based Tillotson's Ltd. The actual award presented was a gold plaque mounted on ivory Catalin and covered in Perspex - very modern.

 

Catalin was a thermosetting polymer very similar to Bakelite and first produced in 1928 when the original patents to Bakelite expired.
