This is my truck - I had to erase the company name, the logo and the licence plate number (company rule) but this is it! Kenworth T780 With a Paccar MX-13 engine, followed by a 53 feet reefer trailer.
Peterbilt Motors Company is an American truck manufacturer. Established in 1939 from the acquisition of Fageol Truck and Motor Company, Peterbilt specializes in the production of heavy-duty (Class 8) and medium-duty (Classes 5–7) commercial vehicles. The namesake of company founder T. A. "Al" Peterman, Peterbilt has operated as part of PACCAR since 1958, operating alongside sister division Kenworth Truck Company (though serving as one of the longest-running marketplace rivalries in American truck manufacturing).

A shortened history of these trucks that were built in England,Fodens at Sandbach and ERF at Middlewich both in Cheshire.
Foden’s history started off as a single family company before splitting into two. Long story short – father Edwin started an engineering firm in Sandbach in 1856, becoming a major manufacturer of steam trucks. Fast forward to 1930, and younger son Edwin Richard saw the firm’s future with those newfangled diesels, so split from brother William to set up ERF. William continued running Foden.
The two rival firms went on to epitomise the classic British “kit truck” philosophy of adding proprietary drivelines to in-house chassis and cabs, although Foden dabbled for many years with its own design of two-stroke diesels. They continued with varying fortunes until the turn of the century when both met similar fates. Foden now owned by Paccar USA (Kenworth,Peterbilt) since 1980, was gradually absorbed into the DAF range a Dutch company that is a subsidiary of Paccar USA until in 2006 it disappeared up its own stainless steel exhaust stack. In a saga of takeovers and litigation worthy of a book in itself, ERF found itself owned by Western Star and Freightliner USA, until 2007 when it finally suffered a similar end to Foden at the hands of MAN Truck Division Germany.
While this is a boring old roster shot on typical gray day in the emerald city the subject is just too cool not to share. I just stumbled across these while looking thru some old folders and figured I'd drop them in an album.
This is the engine pit tracks south of Spokane Street at the south end of Stacy Street Yard in South Seattle. There always seemed to be something interesting in this area along with the standard modern road power. BNSF 2819 is a GP39E rebuild that began life in Dec. 1965 as a Frisco GP35 originally numbered SLSF 729 and rebuilt by EMD in LaGrange around 1990. Still wearing BN white face dating from her rebuild she has since been repainted into the current BNSF H3 livery and I believe she is still on the roster.
Even cooler is what she is coupled to, a 'heritage' caboose numbered X234 and adorned with a large Great Northern logo. Repainted only a year or so prior this isn't an actual GN caboose (in fact the real X234 still survives as a private cabin in the woods near Flathead Lake in Montana) but was BN green when built as FWD 187 for then subsidiary Fort Worth and Denver. What else is cool is that she isn't far from the place of her birth having been constructed at the former Paccar (Pacific Car and Foundry) plant in nearby Renton in February 1980.

The twin-steer Foden double-decker must surely rank amongst the greatest bus ‘might have beens’. A 1979 change in legislation enabled Hong Kong bus operators to seek new buses on three-axles up to 12 metres in length. Dennis, Leyland and MCW
responded with rear-engined designs with twin rear-axles; Volvo added a rear tag-axle to a lengthened version of its front-engined Ailsa. Foden - anxious to break into the lucrative Hong Kong bus market - proposed an innovative twin-steer, front-engined design. China Motor Bus and Kowloon Motor bus were both keen to progress this option and a contemporary photo-montage suggests that Foden had already approached bodybuilder Alexander. Unfortunately, that was as far as the project got. Foden went into receivership and its eventual buyer Paccar decided to withdraw from the bus market. Thanks to Keith McGillivray for the base image of Lathalmond’s Leyland Victory (09-Apr-22).

"We don't need no stinking outriggers!"
I think this is a 1940s Peterbuilt with a Bycrus Erie crane on the back. They used to tell us not to stand under a suspended load when working around cranes. Good advice. Gravity exists.
I'd love to hear the clatter of the diesel under the hood. It looks like the crane boom folds up onto the crane cab. You wouldn't drive it as seen here. When I was younger, I'd want to take it for a spin and try to get a feel for the old crash box, (transmission).
…To be a powerful economic country, you do need to manufacture things. ...You can’t service your way to the top of the economic totem pole. You can’t lawyer your way to the top of the economic totem pole. There is a reason to keep factories — not least of which is national security. …We need to be a country that is proud of people who work with their hands — that pay[s] them a decent wage.

Ecology Recycling and Transportation Services runs 61 Kenworth T880s equipped with PACCAR MX-11 engines rated at 430 hp with 1,550 lb-ft. of torque. The company's drivers see no difference in top-end performance, and in Arizona, are able to run up to 75 mph. As Ecology runs tractor and trailer combinations at the maximum gross weight of 80,000 pounds on nearly every load, drivers find the pulling power of the PACCAR MX-11 engine is excellent. (This photo is offered for editorial use. In addition to Kenworth branding and logos on the T880, Western Trailers logo and brand may not be altered or removed from the trailers prior to publication.)

This old truck was sitting next to the railroad tracks of the Huron & Eastern in Bay City, Michigan. I don't know anything about American trucks, except that Paccar owns DAF, so information on the make of this one is much appreciated.

Lyman, Washington car show. I've Seen some very nice restored Kenworths around here, perhaps because the testing facility for Paccar is here. They are the parent company of Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF trucks.

An increasingly rare sight in New Zealand in 2023......is a Foden Alpha.
A large proportion of the surviving 8-wheeled chassis are former Fonterra dairy tankers. Alphas were the first choice for Fonterra in their early days. Unfortunately Paccar's decision to cease production of the marque, led to Fonterra looking elsewhere and going for Volvo trucks in a big way. Ironically Paccar's alternative, DAF Trucks, have never featured in the Fonterra fleet!

For Steam Sunday here's a nice crisp simple shot from my epic 300 mile all day chase from Kendleton to Laredo. After a 75 mile run down CPKC's Rosenburg Sub, the special swung onto trackage rights and ran 13.5 south Union Pacific's Cuero Sub (ex SP) before hanging a right at Placedo onto the ex MoPac rails of UP's Angleton Sub. They ran only three miles south over it and are now entering the Brownsville Sub for a 79 mile run to Robstown where they'll again find home rails via CPKC's Laredo Sub, the ex Tex-Mex mainline.
The special was running as CPKC train B40B, the tri-national Final Spike special led by famed CP 2816, the 'Empress', an H1b class 4-6-4 Hudson built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1930. Orignally retired in 1960 after there decades of pulling CP passenger trains the locomotive was purchased by F. Nelson Blount for preservation as part of his Steamtown collection in Vermont. It later moved with the rest of the collection to Scranton until CP purchased it back from the National Park Service in 1998. Returned to service in 2001 she operated until 2012 when E. Hunter Harrison took the reigns at CP. Eight years later Keith Creel (EHH's successor) reversed course and she was fired up for a test run and then a second restoration began which was completed in 2023.
As a way of celebrating the approval and consummation of the Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern Railway merger on April 14, 2023 CPKC is running a tri-nation tour across the length of their newly combined network. The trip began in Calgary on April 24th and will conclude in Mexico City on June 7th before returning home for a total of three months on the road and 9000 miles round trip! To learn much more check out CPKC's official page for the tour here:

At rest at left in stark contrast to the glamorous special are a couple Southern Pacific veterans sitting in Bloomington Yard at MP H221 (as measured from the former Brownsville and Matamoros international bridge). The former Missouri Pacific Yard
is the division post between the Angleton Sub to the north (right) and the Brownsville Sub to the south and is busy with UP's own traffic as well as trackage rights tenants CPKC and BNSF. UP 1374 is an EMD GP40-2 blt. Feb. 1978 as SP 7610. She is coupled to SP 4720 a bay window caboose whose white Southern Pacific lettering has nearly all faded away. This car is one of 75 in class C-50-9, the last cabooses to be delivered to the SP in 1980 from PACCAR, they were designed with no side windows at all.
