A well-ordered life is like climbing a tower; the view halfway up is better than the view from the base, and it steadily becomes finer as the horizon expands. William Lyon Phelps

Setophaga Castanea

In contrast to the more stable populations of other warblers, their numbers go up and down depending on outbreaks of the spruce budworm. They are abundant during infestations, but decline or even disappear from some areas a few years later.

Re edit of an older post. Not much activity so playing in Lightroom.

On September 8th a photo excursion was operated from Scranton, Pa. to Tobyhanna, Pa. over the Delaware lackawanna trackage with an ABA set of Lackawanna F3s. The trip was operated by the ARHS during their 2018 convention. Thanks goes out to everyone who made this trip possible, it was very well organized.

A pair of Yorkrail CF7s shove across York Street past some classic row houses, with part of the Old York County Prison visible in the background. As close as the main is to the houses, the siding that once existed here was apparently even closer. Much of what is visible in this scene is gone today. The row houses have been demolished, the road itself is now a private driveway and 1504 has since been scrapped. As of late 2022, the abandoned 1853-built prison remains standing and 1500 is the last CF7 on Yorkrail, although I'm not sure if it's still in service. The trackage in this view is the remaining stub of the original Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad main to Baltimore, MD, so it's fitting that 1504 still wore Ma & Pa lettering.

Snow flurries abound, and it's cold and gray, but that didn't deter some from seeing the Pitt Line's train of the day. NS 1800 and a rare C40-8W haul 18N up the west slope under the endangered PRR era signal bridge in Lilly, PA.
