We had had a brilliant holiday on Lake Como. I have taken far too many photographs (as usual) and I’m posting a selection from the Isolo Bella. This is the first of a number of postings.
The Overseas Railroad in the Florida Keys stretched more than 100 miles and was completed in 1912. The Over Sea Railroad was destroyed in the 1935 hurricane and was replaced by a highway for automobiles.

French Guyana (French: Guyane) is an overseas department and region of France. It is located in the north of South America on the Atlantic Ocean between Brazil and Suriname at 4° north latitude and 53° west longitude. French Guyana is a fully integrated part of the French state and thus also part of the European Union and NATO. The euro is legal tender. 90% of the region is covered with primary tropical rainforest, which is part of the Amazon basin and has a great diversity of species. French Guyana is about the size of Austria and has about 250,000 inhabitants, most of whom live on or near the coast. The climate is tropical, the average annual temperature is 28°C with an average humidity of 90%. There is no tourist infrastructure worth mentioning, developed roads only near the coast. The region is known in Europe as a former French penal colony ("Papillon") and through the spaceport 'Centre Spatial Guyanais' in Kourou.

Französisch-Guyana (frz. Guyane) ist ein Überseedépartement und eine Region Frankreichs. Es liegt im Norden von Südamerika am Atlantischen Ozean zwischen Brasilien und Suriname bei 4° nördlicher Breite und 53° westlicher Länge. Frz.-Guyana ist ein voll integrierter Teil des französischen Staates und damit auch Teil der Europäischen Union und der NATO. Der Euro ist gesetzliches Zahlungsmittel. 90% der Region sind mit primärem tropischen Regenwald bedeckt, der Teil des Amazonasbecken ist und eine große Artenvielfalt aufweist. Frz.-Guyana ist etwa so groß wie Österreich und hat ca. 250.000 Einwohner, die zum großen Teil an oder nahe der Küste leben. Das Klima ist tropisch, die Jahrestemperatur beträgt konstant im Mittel 28°C bei einer durchschnittlichen Luftfeuchtigkeit von 90%. Eine nennenswerte touristische Infrastruktur gibt es nicht, ausgebaute Straßen nur in Küstennähe. In Europa bekannt ist die Region als ehemalige französische Strafkolonie ("Papillon") und durch den Weltraumbahnhof 'Centre Spatial Guyanais' in Kourou.

Saint Augustine is the historic headquarters city of the Florida East Coast Railway dating from 1885 when Henry Flagler established his offices in the city, some 10 years before the FEC name came into existence. The road built three office towers in the 1920s that served as the railroad's headquarters until 2006 when they were donated to Flagler College and the railroad relocated its leadership and administration to Jacksonville. Two cast relief concrete logos still proudly adorn the two covered corridors that connect the three buildings fronting on lovely outdoor courtyards. They feature the 'overseas' logo that shows a train steaming out over Long Key Viaduct on the line's remarkable Key West Extension which was only in service from 1912 to 1935. The historical maker in front of the buildings on Malaga Street reads:
Florida East Coast Railway - General Office Buildings. Henry M. Flagler built the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) to link his resort empire and establish the east coast of Florida as 'The American Riviera.' Flagler, partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil, developed the Atlantic shoreline with a chain of luxury hotels from Jacksonville to Key West. Perhaps Flagler's greatest achievement was the construction of the Key West Extension finished shortly before his death in 1913. By 1916, the FEC Railway included 23 railroads, terminals, and bridge companies along 739 miles of track. Steamships linked the railroad at Miami to Nassau, Bahamas, and at Key West to Havana, Cuba. The Florida East Coast Hotel Company owned 14 resorts joined by the rail lines. In St. Augustine, Flagler's 1888 railway station west of downtown was replaced by three office towers built starting from south to north in 1922, 1923 and 1926. They served as the Railway's headquarters until 2006, when the FEC provided a $7.2 million gift-in-equity, making possible the transfer of the property to Flagler College. The College is committed to preservation of the buildings and adapting them for College uses.

Ballots have not been sent out to all of the New York State members of the United States Military overseas. That's over 340,000 votes. In 2008 our military votes didn't count. It looks like the Democrat majority in the House and Senate will hold true and not allow our members of the military overseas to vote. They could quite possibly be the votes to decide important races. Call your congressman and Senators to see if your state has sent out their ballots.

"More than seven million emigrants left overseas via Bremerhaven. The “Gallery of the 7 million” pays homage to each one of them. Here their very personal life stories come to the fore. Some are only known by name and date of departure, other biographies are well known to us. Why did all these people prefer living abroad to their old homeland? What were the historical backgrounds of European mass emigration?"
Every drawer with a knob attached gives information about one or two people. The shallow drawers would just reveal the name, date and ship, the deeper ones contain pictures, stories, letters.

Jede dieser Schubladen enthält Informationen zu ein oder zwei Personen. Die flachen Schubladen bloß den Namen, das Schiff und das Datum.
Die tieferen Schubladen zeigen auch Briefe, Fotos, Dinge, die mitgenommen wurden.
Alleine in diesem Bereich könnte man Stunden verbringen.

Things are shifting. There are persuasive arguments being discussed among CEOs about hidden long-term costs of manufacturing overseas that do not show up in quarterly and annual financial statements but that bite back hard. Has the equilibrium point and risk shifted so that their company's best financial interest is to bring manufacturing back? That means higher prices. Will those discussions become reality?

The 1965 British Overseas Airways Corporation (better known as BOAC) bar tariff leaflet cover - anyone for a Martini Cocktail at 3s 6d? In the top corner can be seen the BOAC "Speedbird" symbol, designed for the airline's predecessor Imperial Aiways in 1932 by Theyre Lee-Elliott and that continued in use for British Airways, the sucessor company to BOAC until 1984.

This old bridge made it through a Category 5 hurricane in 1935 and another Category 4 hurricane just last month, and many hurricanes in-between over 100+ years. - I've taken many images of her over the years but on this day she seemed to be heading up into the clouds...
If you squint your eyes you can just imagine those classic cars of the late 1930's coming up and over this bridge with their passengers visiting the islands all the way to Key West for the first time. To their amazement I'm sure they said; "We're 'driving' across the ocean!!"

The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is a disused bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. Originally part of the Overseas Railway, the State of Florida purchased it after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and converted it to provide automobile use as part of the Overseas Highway in 1938. After a replacement Bahia Honda Bridge was opened in 1972, two spans of the bridge were removed to accommodate boat traffic and make the majority of the bridge inaccessible to pedestrian traffic, but the rest remain standing.
