There is a hill not far from here that is actually designated the "Whalers' Lookout Conservation Area". That's because during the 19th century whalers actually did put spotters up there as the migratory path of the whales took them up the east coast. They were mostly Sperm and Humpback Whales, but some of the majestic Blue Whales were captured as well. But the turn of the 20th century they were all but extinct in these waters.
The good news is that currently whale numbers are at almost record levels, and although we didn't catch a glimpse of whales on this day, they are certainly out there. ourworld.unu.edu/en/humpback-whales-make-a-comeback-in-au...

"Tell Steve to get out here with his camera", were the words I heard from my nephew. He saw the mist coming off the lake and the color in the clouds that I so often look for, so out I ran to find Copper Island immersed in photographic magic.
I'm not one to make too many controversial photos, but a friend asked me to do this several years ago. Sadly, it seems to resonate now more than ever. Our youngest is in high school and her school is planning a walk out today. I think several school are, actually. How unfortunate that they feel this need. Not to protest some terrible war, but to iterate the fact that they do not feel safe. We have to do better.
I will resume my regular, upbeat broadcasting after this post!
