The Gemini telescope is preparing for a night of astronomical observation. In the background is the Canada-France-Hawaii operated telescope.
The Gemini has a mirror of diameter 8.1 meters! These telescopes, among many other of the world's largest optical telescopes, sit atop Mauna Kea on Hawaii's Big Island at nearly 14,000 feet of elevation.
When dealing with this I realized (finally) that I could remove duplicate code and use this as the replacement:

soft_uart_rx_byte &= ~bit_value;
}
[...]
Now the _BV(bit) expression has to be evaluated just once. But that didn't help at all. It seems the compiler had already optimized the previous code.
