Low sun of the afternoon lighting some of the trees at Silica Country Park, scunthorpe. Taken with NightCap. Long Exposure mode, 5.46 second exposure, 1/295s shutter speed.
So unusual to have open water at this time of year. Since this was taken we’ve had lots of snow and cold temperatures - I’m glad we went out to the mountains that day.
Connecting to the small banks which would be otherwise inaccesable at Silica pond, scunthorpe. Taken with NightCap. Long Exposure mode, 4.26 second exposure, 1/704s shutter speed.
Wanted to give the shot a bit of "Day after tomorrow" feeling. Not sure if I made it but gave it a try :)
Winnebago River - Leland
The river reflection and time of day created very deep blues towards the north. A little trace of snow from the night before, but melting away quite quickly!
The calendar says spring, the weatherman claims spring . . . now we need Mother Nature to agree!

The most still water part of Silica nature park pond, once it was free of ducks and swans :-) Taken with NightCap. Long Exposure mode, 6.63 second exposure, 1/613s shutter speed.
The Winnebago River after a light snow and open water in January two years ago. It was an unusual weather pattern that year, the cold and frozen river came later . . .
Right now we are just darn cold with a high today of maybe 2 above F. and -11 degrees coming tonight.

This is a relatively shallow acidic lake which contains a small population of coarse fish and a range of invertebrates. Common Toads and Palmate Newts spawn during Spring. On summer evenings feeding Sand Martins and Swallows swoop low over the water to catch flies; at dusk hunting bats emerge from their roosts to feed. This photo was taken on 5th January 2022, as were all the others in this series.

Everyday there is more and more open water and less ice along the shoreline.Spring is coming!

In this part of the world, these birds used to be migratory, leaving late fall and, when they returned in early spring, herald of the end of winter.
Now they are as likely to stay as to go, making some instinctive calculation with the berry crop - looks good for the winter, or not.
A smallish flock is residing in and around Mud Lake this winter. They have been fighting the Waxwings for the berry crop, and fighting each other - and the still hanging in Hermit Thrush - for access to a tiny patch of open water at the base of the ridge between Mud Lake and the Ottawa River.
The open water is very tiny, and more or less inexplicable: it is like a ditch across from the Lake, beside the road that runs across the north side of the Lake. It has been open water in the days of -30. This may have something to do with the fact that the water (which looks like it could fit in a couple of bathtubs) is full - full! - of tiny fish.
The Robins come by and pick a fish out of the water, drop it until it loses some of its vitality, and then swallow it whole. It is quite amazing to watch.
Among the Robins, there seems to be a dominant bird that patrols the open water, chasing away any competition. When on a very cold day I dropped by to see if I could find the Thrush, the Robin was unfazed, and stood its ground on a broken branch beside the pool of fish.
I don’t usually have Robins so unimpressed - not only did the bird not flush, it didn’t even look at me, maintaining its focus on other birds that might think of visiting the open water.

As the river flows under the bridge, it splits and creates an island. This view is the north channel, with the large island on the right.
I found the river reflecting the blue sky to be quite delightful. After days and days of our subzero temperatures, I wonder if it would be still running open today?

I am standing at the end of the Tanana Airstrip runway, on the south bank of the Tanana River.
Low angle of the late sunrise (11:30) casts a pinkish glow on the hills, and reflects in the open water upriver.
This is the Cornwall Guindon Park section of bay, from St. Lawrence River. Covered with ice but a few small water openings. Still unable to canoe these open water sections that could stuck us on ice. It’s now all fully iced with cold weather.
A polar bear above Hudson Bay, waiting for freeze-up to get out on the ice to hunt seals. The bay, seen in the background, is starting to freeze up, so it won't be long before her winter hunt can start. Churchill, Manitoba.

Access through Lost Villages down to the open remote old Kings Highway under St. Lawrence River. Water ice broken here and accessible to canoe as the water was open by this shoreline. We came during the start of sunset, paddled for 30 minutes and ended as the sunset was down, viewed below.
The canoe touching the sunset reflection.

Signs of Spring at beach: there is open water now near the shore. Lots of wood debris litters the remaining ice at the shoreline and trees are now visible on the little peninsula that once were completely ice covered making the wonderful ice formations in my earlier photos.
