Using the newly released Open LiDAR data for England. DEM was clipped to the boundary of the City of London in QGIS (boundary data copyright OpenStreetMap contributors). 2m resolution and quite noisy, but ok at this scale...
Rendered using an orthographic camera, not perspective, so heights do not get smaller the further away you go. So the wonderful Father Ted joke with 'these are small, and those are far away' doesn't apply here :)
Material is 50% ambient occlusion, 50% diffuse. Gives a more chalky appearance, rather than the waxy/soapy look you get with subsurface scattering... and much faster to render.
I hope there's data for St Michaels Mount, I want to make my own Minas Tirith. ;)
OSM Data from Geofabrik and Public Lighting from OpenDataParis
Dark Brown serves as a base color for most features and the "Add" Blending Mode is used for the Lighting Aspect.
Public Lighting as Points for a pointillistic and realistic flavour, Roadways with different widths and values according to type (Dark Brown), Railways, Buildings (Random Coloured around Dark Brown), Natural (Dark Green)
A heatmap was made from OSM Points file and added with "Multiply" blending mode to make a Halo (Raster > Heatmap Analysis)

Having obtained a rather good and large dataset from the recently instated Greek geodata portal, i was looking for a way to quickly visualise its extent.
I admit to having in my mind those images you sometimes see at doctors practices, where, for example, they would have posters of the muscular or circulatory system, trying (a bit harder than i would feel comfortable with) to convince you of their...interests.
Fortunately, each road segment had a characterisation field attached to it so it was relatively easy to "paint" the highways thicker than smaller streets within populated areas.
The slight detail here is that the thickness of the "arteries" is decreased following a power-law...a little trick that was inspired by the circulatory network itself.
This image appears in this blog post (in Greek, you have been warned :-) ) which talks briefly about road safety in Greece....Yeah, sometimes the street is literally bloody...

A snapshot of some of the data my phone has been collecting since last year. I've zoomed in on Leeds & Yorkshire in particular.
I've done this with OpenPaths. You can find out more about the research innitiative here:
For additional reading, I also recommend this post which quotes Jer Thorp:
www.creativeapplications.net/iphone/openpaths-webapp-ipho...
From the project site:
"On April 20, 2011, researchers announced that they had discovered a file on Apple iOS devices, like the iPhone and iPad, that contains the device's location records for the last year or more. These records show where the device is on a regular interval, in some cases recording its location every few minutes.
Apple recently announced they will patch iOS to prevent so much data from being stored on your phone or PC. Until then, this data represents a unique opportunity to help solve some of the world's toughest problems. We believe you should have the option of donating your data in an open, secure fashion, while maintaining control of your information and where it goes."
