'Family Love' by Taf Tendai, one of the collective of Chitungwiza Sculptors in Harare, Zimbabwe.

We bought this African opal stone sculpture while on holiday in Dorset.

A beautiful light greenish serpentine, opal stone is a very hard stone finely textured with an almost translucent surface sometimes specked with red, orange and bluish dots and patches. Opal stone is famous for its milky light-coloured greens and smooth texture. It is also unique in that it has fewer colour variations than Serpentine. It is also mined at Chiweshe, two hours north of Harare. This stone is one of the favourites of sculptors, as it’s not as hard as spring stone and other serpentines, but still polishes to a high finish. Opal stone also has at times, a brown colour throughout the predominate green. The appearance can be smooth or mottled. As with most of the stones mined for the purpose of sculpting, opal is mined without the use of automotive tools. On the Mohs hardness scale, Opal stone rates between 5.0-5.5.

Fairchild's latest art exhibition is now open! Chapungu: Custom and Legend, a Culture in Stone, features more than 80 stone sculptures, some reaching 11 feet tall and weighing up to three tons. Crafted by artists of the Shona tribe of Zimbabwe, these sculptures depict the culture and way of life of the Zimbabwean people. They are grouped by themes throughout the lowlands of the Garden. You don't want to miss these majestic pieces, on exhibition at Fairchild through May 2013.

Chapungu: Custom and Legend, a Culture in Stone, is on exhibit in the lowlands of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden with 82 unique, hand-carved sculptures by African artists from Zimbabwe.

Carved from opal stone, cobalt and springstone, these alluring works of art will be grouped by theme: Custom and Legend, Family, Nature and Environment, Role of Elders, Role of Women, Social Comment, The Spirit World and Village Life. These amazing sculptures range in height from three to 10 feet and weigh between 600 and 6,000 pounds.

“Each of these sculptures is a unique, one of a kind creation that the artists have produced based on their own ideas and passions,” says Roy Guthrie, Chapungu Curator.

Many of the 35 artists represented are from Zimbabwe’s native tribe, the Shona people. The Shona tribe believes that the “Chapungu Bird” is a good omen, bringing them protection and good fortune. Chapungu is a metaphor for the Bateleur Eagle, Terathopius ecaudatus, a powerful bird of prey that can fly up to 300 miles a day at 30 to 50 miles an hour and lives in the savannahs, open forests and semi-deserts of central and southern Africa.

This is made from Opal stone in the Shona tradition. In 1957 Frank McEwen became a curator at a major gallery in Zimbabwe. He met budding artists and encouraged them to create artworks that emphasised their ‘tribal consciousness’. This movement came to be known as ‘Shona sculpture’, named after Zimbabwe’s most numerous tribe. www.shonasculpture.gallery/shona-sculpture/shona-sculptur...

The Sculpture Park at Churt near Farnham is an amazing collection of C20th sculpture, many by emerging African artists.

It was created by Eddie Powell a.k.a Wilfred Pritchard, a sculptor in his own right and a passionate collector of art, who needed somewhere to display (and sell) his collection. It's been open for around 15 years and contains up to 6,000 sculptures of varying sizes over a 10 acre site. www.thesculpturepark.com/
