This place suffers an extreme amount of vandalism. The entire close building was intact until recently. Criminals blew out the support structure with shotguns, then burned the wood in illegal fire rings (while forest fire danger was extremely high).
For a long time there was a propane tank on the roof of the stamp mill, with bullet holes in it, an apparent attempt at arson of the entire structure. I hope the Forest Service or Mono County Sherriff's Dept has hidden game cameras onsite, to catch and prosecute the perps.
This photo looks unnatural and otherworldly to me now but that is also how I felt onsite . A blanket of fog was about to descend over the dunes and the light was very strange.
Government Gardens is a beautiful public park situated along the edge of Lake Rotorua - NZ. - and just minutes from the city centre. A very popular tourist attraction.
The Tudor-style Bath House was built onsite and opened in 1908, and is noted as the first major investment in the New Zealand tourism industry by the government. It now houses the Rotorua Museum and art gallery. It is currently closed for renovation and earthquake strengthening.

Comet C/2017 T2 (PanSTARRS) is in the astronomy news this month and toward the end of last week (May 22, 2020) it paid an approved socially distanced visit to two bright galaxies - our old friends Messier 81 and 82. The rendezvous makes an image of beautiful contrast in color, shape, and form, all set in a field of colorful stars and even more distant galaxies, laced with an Integrated Flux Nebula background.
Notes on the galaxies: M81 (at the top) is 12 million light years from Earth and was first discovered by Johann Elert Bode in December 1774. It can be found in a small telescope about 10 degrees northwest of the constellation Ursa Major (the big dipper). The spiral arms of M81 are well defined and prominent. They contain easily resolved blue-green and red regions of new star formation. This beautifully symmetric galaxy is an example of what astronomers call a grand design spiral galaxy.
The galaxy below M81 near the center of the image is M82, sometimes called the cigar galaxy. It is a starburst galaxy and Hubble images reveal massive clusters of stars near the core of the galaxy (the red regions in the image). The average mass of one these clusters is 200,000 times the mass of our Sun and in this high density, energetic region new stars are being born at a rate 10 times that of our entire Milky Way galaxy. The cloudy background in the bottom portion of the image and elsewhere is Integrated Flux Nebula, reflection from dusty regions in the galaxy illuminated by the integrated light from the stars in the galaxy - very, very faint.
Comet C/2017 T2 (PanSTARRS) is just passing through and is now close to Earth. It was discovered by the Pan STARRS survey telescope on Haleakala on the island of Maui in Hawaii in 2017 when it was still beyond Saturn. It is in a hyperbolic orbit that is inclined 57 degrees to the plane of the solar system. It probably formed in the outer most part of the solar system - a dynamically new comet. This means it is not a periodic comet and will never return close to Earth. By the year 2025 it will be 15 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun (an astronomical unit or au) from us and magnitude 21. It is presently magnitude 11.7 and 1.7 au from Earth.
Constructing this image was a massive job and I worked on it pretty steadily over 3 days. Three factors contributed to the processing tasks, the comet is moving, we used a monochrome camera with 3 color filters (one shot color is always easier with comets), we used dithering between sub-exposures to generate the files for what is known as drizzle integration (this improves image quality when the pixels are under sampled - larger than the resolution of the telescope optics or the seeing). I collected 94 sub-exposures of 5 minutes each, making 4 hours and 42 minutes of total integration time on the night of May 21-22, 2020. PixInsight was the principle tool used for processing and resulted in a 64 megapixel drizzle integrated image. The telescope was the 8” RH 200 astrograph at FOAH Observatory, Magdalena, New Mexico, owned and operated by John W. Briggs. I controlled the telescope and camera from my house in Albuquerque remotely over the internet and John was onsite collaborating and minding the dome.

In 1739, the British Navy won a victory over Spain for control of the town of Portobelo, Panama. The victory was celebrated to such a degree it led to the naming of many things throughout the British Empire: a road in London, colonial estates in the United States, a peninsula in New Zealand, and a Scottish beach town that has since become engulfed by the urban sprawl of Edinburgh.
During the early years of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, the fast-growing town of Portobello became the site of many manufacturing industries, such as brickworks, saltworks, and glassmaking. Given its wide, sandy beach located conveniently close to both the country’s capital and its largest city, Glasgow, Portobello came to be known as a peculiar combination of an industrial and resort town.
The industrial boom in the early 20th century lead to the establishment of Buchan’s Pottery, which built two bottle kilns (so called because of their shape) onsite for its operations. The first was finished in 1906 and the second one three years later. They are the only bottle kilns that are standing in Scotland.
Near the end of the century, Scotland was on its way to becoming a post-industrial economy and many companies would close or relocate operations, Buchan’s among them. The pottery relocated to Crieff across the Firth of Forth in 1972, leaving behind these kilns as a relic of the industrial heritage of Portobello.
The kilns were renovated in 2006, and an accidental, partial collapse of the 1909 kiln required it to be fully rebuilt. Both original and new bricks were used for this renovation, and a brick marked “2013” shows the split between new and old material. As of August 2019, the 1906 kiln is being rebuilt out of the original bricks as well
Onsite at the new Cleanaway depot in Hillsdale, decked out impressively to house the fresh City of Sydney fleet, we see the line of 10 recycling trucks which will oversee collections in the former north and south regions. 7 big Merc Benz and 3 little Hinos are done up in the bright yellow signage, all looking pretty damn good together. Must appreciate the clean sight of brand new rear loaders!
My last day in Oldsmar, was my shortest day onsite with the fewest team members, and yet it was one of the best days spent on this trip.
The majority of my team flew out early, where as I had a late afternoon flight. I was able to meet some great people, connect with our new Vice-President, and have some really productive conversations with people in the organization.
Traveling home was a long bit- I didn’t make it home until after 10:30PM, and as sick as I was on the road, I am so very glad that I was able to make this trip happen!

Onsite at the Eastern Creek depot, we see a portion of the fresh SUEZ side loaders built up for the new Penrith City Council contract. They’re all 6x4 Ivecos with Superior Pak units, including 24m bodies for garbage, 27m sizes for organics and the larger 33m capacity for recycling. Seen here on Saturday afternoon when the old fleet had been swapped out for the new, with mechanics checking settings and testing functions ready for the Monday start. Sadly most of the trucks were still plain white, with only a few featuring White Ribbon livery... hopefully there’s some exciting stuff yet to come!
Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and (former) Restaurant located at 454 Main St. in Niagara Falls,NY. The HJ Motor Lodge is still operating as of February 2019 although a rumor has recently surfaced that suggests the site will be razed for a new Hilton Hotel. The restaurant was most recently occupied by a souvenir shop which operated under the name Three Sisters Trading Post. The large "Concept 65" restaurant opened in 1965 alongside the five story motor lodge which never featured a gate lodge but merely an A-Frame facade over the entrance of the building although it still featured the trademark orange roof and was topped with a "Lamplighter" weather vane. Unlike most HJ properties this location featured a third orange roofed canopy complete with a weather vane that was constructed over the indoor pool. The A-Frame canopy over the motor lodge lobby was removed by the early 1990s although the orange roof over the pool has remained intact (as of January 2019) minus its weather vane. I was shocked to see that during my visit to the property in June 2015 the onsite Heliport which was built in 1965 was still functioning 50 years later! I happily took a ride over Niagara Falls and received a 20% discount for staying at the Howard Johnson! The restaurant closed in the late 1990s and was converted into Three Sisters Trading Post which as of January 2019 is in the process of closing. The reviews and recent photos posted on travel websites suggest the property has deteriorated in recent years (since my 2015 visit) although for being a 50+ year old property some "wear and tear" is expected.
UPDATE: The property dropped its HJ affiliation in May 2019 and now operates under the name Niagara Inn (as of June 2019).
"I am up and ready for my onsite meeting here in St. Louis… The one thing I forgot to bring was one of the most important personal items: my journal. I spent the morning instead reading and working on some plans, so I was focused and ready by the time I hit the building.
Overall it was a great day lasting long into the night. It's great to meet the people face to face that you connect with via phone calls, emails, and web cam meetings.

The Haunting History Of The Hose & Hound.
The Hose & Hound is built in Calgary's original Firehall #3. The building was constructed in 1906, for what was then an enormous amount of money, $3,000. It was used as a firehall from 1906 to 1952. When fire trucks became too big to fit through the doors, the building was replaced by a new Firehall #3 a few blocks away (Which became a private residence in 1991). From 1952 untnil 1982 the old firehall was used as a fireman's training center, a community center, a furniture store and finally became a derelict flophouse for drug users and "C Stroll" hookers, Inglewood wasn't always the nice place as it is today.
In 1982 someone had the idea to open a fine dining restaurant in the old firehall. The building was gutted and rebuilt from the inside out. The brick facade was just about all that was kept. An extension was built on the back and a skylight was added to the roof.
As you can probably imagine, a fine dining restaurant in the middle of what was then the "C Stroll" faced definite challenges and the place ate up the investment of seven different owners over the next ten years. Finally, in 1992, the fine dining idea was abandoned and the restaurant was converted to a pub, called the Hose & Hydrant. The interior was completely redesigned to reflect the historic nature of the building.
From 1992 until 1996, the Hose & Hydrant was owned by two sets of owners. During that period it went through the usual ups and downs of a new pub in a redeveloping community. As Inglewood became a safer and more stable neighborhood, the pub's popularity increased. The current owners bought it in 1996 and it has seen steady growth since then.
In 1997, a retired firefighter's social club in Burnaby, B.C. took issue with the use of the name "The Hose & Hydrant." They claimed the name for themselves and had the copyright to back up their claim: The name was to the Hose & Hound Neighbourhood Pub and so it remains today.
Storied of the various ghosts that inhabit the Hose & Hound began even before the building was retired as a firehall. Calgary's first Fire Chief, Cappy Smart, had a fixation about collecting animals, and it seems that a few of his collection have lived on at the Hose & Hound. The first ghost to inhabit the fire hall was a horse, named Lightning, who died in the building as a result of a fire. Occasionally, early in the morning, you can still hear the clopping of Lightning's hooves in front area of the pub.
Cappy also kept a pet monkey, Barney, at the pub. One day, in May of 1911, while they crew was away fighting a fire, Barney was left behind, tied up out in front of the building. a family, out for walk, happened by and, when the young son tried to offer Barney a treat, the monkey attacked him and caused some pretty serious cuts. Apparently Barney a mean streak as a result of being teased by the firemen. The attack on the little boy was the end of Barney's career as the Firehall #3 mascot, but perhaps not the end of Barney. The firemen had to put him down, since he was a danger to the neighborhood, and they buried his remains in the front of the building. Ever since then, strange things happen in the building.
There are stories of pails of baking soda flying through the air in the kitchen, the dishwasher turning itself on and spraying the kitchen workers, oven doors opening and slamming shut with nobody anywhere near them. The potbellied stove upstairs has been known to move between closing at night and re-opening in the morning....One morning the opening cook complained that he had found his shoe laces untied at least a dozen times in the first two hours of his shift.
The Calgary Paranormal Society spent the night at the pub a few years ago and took some fascinating photos. They found orbs in several places and a very strange reflection in one photograph that looked like the silhouette of a monkey. On another occasion, a self-proclaimed psychic even claimed to see Cappy himself in the pool room area.
The Hose & Hound has been featured on the television show "Creepy Canada", and is mentioned in numerous books on the subject of haunted places. In the years under the current owners, there have been many unexplained occurrences, but none of an evil or malevolent nature. Late at night, if you are the last one to close up, you might feel a ghostly presence, but it is not an angry or scary feeling.
From the artist's statement, posted onsite at Artomatic 2008:
"This book / sculpture is part of an ongoing collaboration with the Arlington Public Library, entitled Transformed Books. These are extra copies of popular titles, withdrawn from the Library's collection, and intended for the Library's ongoing used-book sale. I choose a book that looks interesting to me, read it for the first time, and then transform the interior by cutting, ripping (and in this case burning), adding paint and glue, and installing foreign materials, in order to reflect the book's emotional core. ..."
And here is one of the many passages from the book that I've gone back to read more than once:
"...Years later he'd stood in the charred ruins of a library where blackened books lay in pools of water. Shelves tipped over. Some rage at the lies arranged in their thousands row on row. He picked up one of the books and thumbed through the heavy bloated pages. He'd not have thought the value of the smallest thing predicated on a world to come. It surprised him. That the space which these things occupied was itself an expectation. He let the book fall and took a last look around and made his way out into the cold gray light." -- on p. 187 of the 20th printing of the Vintage paperback.

In September 1961, the new FB Vauxhall Victor was given a much cleaner design with the sharper creases and flatter panels that were then coming into vogue.
Rust protection and passive safety were also substantially improved over the outgoing model. Mechanically, the main change was the option of a 4-speed all-synchromesh transmission with floor change but the previously used 3-speed all-synchro column change unit was still fitted as standard. The engine was also improved with a higher compression ratio and revised manifold increasing the power output to 55 bhp, reducing the 0-60 time to 22 seconds and raising the top speed to 77 mph.
This 1964 Deluxe is certainly one of the nicest we have ever seen, although whether it has remained in such condition, or has been well restored in the past we can’t say.
There is only one MOT in the file, which it passed in 2011 with no advisories when the clock indicated an unsubstantiated but highly credible 57.302 miles, the car having previously been off the road since at least 2006 when online records began.
The accompanying V5C shows that it has had four previous keepers, and one of them visited The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in 1986 according to a parking ticket secreted in the handbook – the £12 fine must have spoilt their day.
A full model brochure lists the extra luxuries that came with the Deluxe – a heater for example, along with cut-pile carpets, individual leather seats, windscreen washers, wheel embellishers and the all-important chrome plated exhaust pipe sleeve – thank goodness.
Better still though, the first owner of this one splashed out on the four-speed gearbox with floor-mounted lever, which all ads up to a range-topping estate, in a great colour scheme and showing no visible signs of rust. That’s all boxes ticked.
Since its arrival onsite, we have not had it running, but can't think it will take its new owner long to put it back on the road.
This is obviously not our first work onsite together since my wife and I are on the same team at work, but this was our first onsite as a married couple. When we announced our engagement to the team, so many people didn't even know we were dating because we kept ourselves that professional at work.
We didn't act any differently at the onsite meeting, we obviously remained as professional as always, but it felt different to sit next to my wife... not just my coworker!

Kitayama Brothers, Inc. Facilities Manager Stuart Kitayama talks about this family business that was founded by his father Ray Kitayama and uncles in 1970, and how the 40 acres of green houses plus outdoor fields in Watsonville, CA have benefited from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), on Thursday, August 27, 2015.
Agriculture has been a part of the Kitayama family for three generations, since before WWII, when his grandfather Takeshi Kitayama began growing flowers and vegetables on Bainbridge Island in the Pungent Sound of Washington. In 1945, after internment at the Manzanar camp in California, his grandfather’s sons Tom and (Stuart’s father) Ray Kitayama, started a nursery; and the business grew. They became leaders in the wholesale flower industry. As the business grew, more family members joined and formed Kitayama Brothers, Inc. in the mid-90’s. Today, the business produces a variety of lisianthus, lily, Gerbera, snapdragon and others, additionally; land is leased to other growers for strawberries and a variety of other crops. Located ¼ mile from the Pacific Ocean (Monterey Bay) Kitayama Brothers, Inc., employs 100 - 300 people depending on the time of year. To water all the flowers, the business uses a combination of irrigation water sources that include ground water wells; sterile reclaimed and recharge water from Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency (PVWMA), a rainwater collection system, hydroponics, and micro irrigation systems. Over the past 15 years, the amount of water from PVWMA has been reduced by 2/3s, making onsite ground water wells ever more important, and a factor in groundwater deletion. Today, there is a high demand on well; this has been a factor in (seawater) salt intrusion in all of their wells, one having to be shutdown, because of the salty water harms plants. There must to be enough fresh water in aquifers to fill the underground basin to resist the inland migration of coastal seawater through the land in between.
About this time, during 2007-2008, he turned to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and talks began about a green house roof drainage system that harvests rainwater. Through a system of pipes, water collects in a plastic lined pond for immediate indoor micro irrigation. KBI were active members of the agricultural community and sought water supply development and filtration solutions to improve efficiency and lower operating costs years before the current drought conditions.
Financial incentive cost shares from the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and technical support from an USDA NRCS engineer to help design and plan the pond lining and other system improvements and additions.
The system has been in operation for one and a half years and has captured 12 acre/feet of water in its first year. It not only captures the water from the greenhouse roofs, it also allows water to be blended with water from well systems and/or reclaimed water from the PVWMA. The pond also allows the business to save money by running electrical pumps during low demand periods of the power grid, when electricity costs are lower. As refinements are made, greater levels of efficiency and cost savings are expected.
An additional system captures water from their hydroponic nursery systems that uses filters and UV light to clean and sterilize the water for in-ground plants. Water used in those fields; percolate down through the soil, helping to recharge the subsurface water basin; help resist salt intrusion, and return as a water resource for their irrigation wells.
Through discussions with the local Community Water Dialogue (CWD,) and equipment loan from the Resource Conservation Districts (RCD), he learned about the use and potential benefits of wireless soil tensiometer and completed a trial use. As they learn to use the recorded data, they see a possible 10-15% reduction in water use by eliminating overwatering on the sandy soil in this area.
