A nice Metro Rail ride from Irwindale to Los Angeles Union Station. Mass public transit in Los Angeles working well. Across from Union Station is Olvera Street, the birthplace of Los Angeles. The weather was nice, just an overall nice day.
August 2011 - skies above Olvera. Situated in the north-eastern corner of the Cadiz province and with a population of about 8,500, the beautiful Andalucian town of Olvera is one of the larger "pueblo blancos" (white villages) in the area with white houses, steep and narrow streets leading up to an old Arab fortress at the top of town. Close by is an impressive church, the 'Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación' (the Parish of Our Lady of the Incarnation). April 2019 - Above the 'Plaza de Andalusia' in the centre of Olvera is the garden of el Peñón del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (the Rock of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). At the top of the rock, with arms raised is the impressive statue of Christ carved by Jose Even Navas, in 1929. The view from the park in this photo is towards Pruna Castle.

Last weekend I joined the Los Angeles Urban Sketchers for a freehand drawing meetup. We met at Union Station and walked to Olvera Street, the oldest part of the city of Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles. As Virginia showed me around and pointed out her favorite spots to sketch, I appreciated the hospitality but thought the LA sketchers must be either very crazy or very skilled. Fellow sketcher Heather and I gamely staked out a spot together and did our best to draw the busy market scene in the allotted time. It turns out that the street was much busier than the group had expected, the weekend being the celebration of Mexico's independence (launched by the priest Miguel Hidalgo on Sept. 16, 1810).
The LA sketchers are indeed a very skilled bunch, but everyone else was sane enough to draw more tractable subjects such as the statue in the plaza, details of the historic train station, etc.
