"The City of Central, commonly known as Central City, is the Home Rule Municipality in Gilpin and Clear Creek counties that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Gilpin County, Colorado, United States. Vicksburg was founded after prospectors from Leadville camped out in Clear Creek Canyon and their burros wandered down to the creek. The next day the prospectors found their animals and also found good float in the creek. Many towns sprang up along the creek including Vicksburg which today has about 10 standing cabins along with a great museum that is open on the weekends.

The Swiss Boy Mine was the primary producer for this township. At one time there were more than 40 buildings in town, including two saloons, two hotels, a store, a boarding house, an assay office, livery stable, blacksmith and two story school house.

Not sure in the wintertime how many people actually live here.

Stopped along US-69 in the ghost town of Picher. The water tower seems to be the most prominent landmark still remaining.

Once a prosperous mining town in the early 20th century, the town and surrounding area became heavily polluted and contaminated. In 1980, Picher was designated a Superfund site, forcing residents to leave and relocate. With the Superfund designation and an EF-4 tornado in 2008 causing death and damage, Picher officially dissolved as a town in 2013. And since 2015, the official population of Picher is zero (0).

Captains Flat is an historic mining town south of Queanbeyan in the Southern Tablelands of rural New South Wales with the Molonglo River running through it.

"The area was originally inhabited by Ngarigo Aboriginal people prior to European settlement. The town formed as a result of mining for gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper and iron pyrites in the hills surrounding the upper reaches of the Molonglo River. The town boomed from 1881 to 1899 then went into a rapid decline until 1939 when rail access revived mining activity for another 23 years." [Text courtesy of: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captains_Flat]. There are so many areas of natural beauty in and around Canberra, it's certainly worth a visit!

The reason they are linked to my pinch river profile is because they will inevitably feed into my work at some stage in some way or another, but for now can just be enjoyed as images of the area that captured my attention and inspired my creativity.

Historical marker for the ghost town of Treece, right off of US-69 at the Kansas-Oklahoma State Line. Not as large and prominent as adjacent Picher, Treece also prospered in the early 20th Century from mining operations - and quickly diminished when mining production declined. And similar to Picher, Treece dealt with major and long-lasting environmental problems - residents were eventually relocated and the city was dissolved in 2012.

Pioche Grade School

The Pioche grade school was opened in 1909. The mission style architecture in unique and contributes to the Pioche heritage. At first the four main rooms with four teachers teaching two classes to a room was the norm. However; through the years as student numbers rose and fell the building has been adapted to the needs of the students and the funds available. The addition of the gymnasium and extra class rooms has enhanced its use over the years. It is the center fro many activities.

Thanks, E. Clampus Vitus, for help in keeping the past alive! Forest City, Dance Hall.

Picher, Oklahoma

Picher, Oklahoma is a former mining town, considered a major center of lead and zinc mining in the early half of the 20th century, and had a peak population of 14,252 in 1926.

But with a decline in mining operations, the town's population declined as well. Mining ceased in the late 1960's, and the resulting effects on the land and water created a significant environmental problem for the town and area.

The most visible of these effects are the many large chat piles (large mounds of toxic and lead-contaminated waste pilings and dust as a result of mining activities) that surround Picher.

In 1980, Picher was designated a Superfund site - eventually the federal and state governments ordered the whole town evacuated and its residents relocated - one of only a handful of towns evacuated and declared uninhabitable due to environmental damage.

An EF4 tornado in 2008 caused significant damage to whatever was left of Picher at the time - and just accelerated the exodus.

The town was officially dissolved in November 2013.

And as of 2015, the official population of Picher is 0 (zero) - essentially making it a ghost town.

Now we jump forward a hundred and 43 years to the present day of February 22, 2013. From a one-time population of close to 2,000 people to now with a population of 40 individuals.

Winfield, initially called Florence and then Lucknow, was founded in 1881. Copper and silver, not gold, were the primary ores removed from the area. The last ore was hauled out by stage in 1918.

In its heyday in 1890 the estimated population was 1500 people. The post office existed from 1881 to 1912. The old schoolhouse and Ball cabin are maintained as museums by the Clear Creek Canyon Historical Society. The old cemetery is located approx. 1/4 mile N. of the town. Twenty-six people are buried there. However, only the grave markers for the two Aude children remain. One of the children, Fred, was the first person buried in the cemetery on June 28, 1885.

It's interesting to note, that everyone that were captured in this photo has been long gone and buried.

I wonder how many countless thousands of people in the distant past has entered through these doors for a few drinks, for a dance and a chance to relax from a hard day of gold mining. Taken Feb. 2013

Masonic Hall

Masonic lodges have used this building since 1872. The Royal Arch Masons first owned the building when they were issued a dispensation on June 12, 1873. Shortly after that St. John's Lodge #18 was issued a charter on Nov. 20, 1873. At the turn of the century both of these lodges moved to the boom town of Delamar, where fire destroyed most of the building records and regalia. The Royal Arch Masons then gave the building in Pioche to St. John's Lodge in about 1905 and it has been used by them continuously since that time.
