Honestly, there were loads and loads of them around. Quite a few more than can possibly have been, even in the 80s.

Colossus. The tape reader is the cage like structure to the right. This supports the paper tape that was transcribed from the teletyped German message. The black box closer to the left is where you set the desired pattern to look for. The pae runs at some 30mph through the reader whcih compares the text on the tape with potential patterns set on the black box. Once a patter is found, Colossus ca then try to use the pattern to break the Lorenz code...
