Demonstrating the high tech seen at Worldcon. Oh, all right, maybe it was actually high tech back in the 60's
Colossus. The tape reader is the cage like structure to the right. This supports the paper tape that was transcribed from the teletyped German message. The black box closer to the left is where you set the desired pattern to look for. The pae runs at some 30mph through the reader whcih compares the text on the tape with potential patterns set on the black box. Once a patter is found, Colossus ca then try to use the pattern to break the Lorenz code...
with the first 'personal' computer that was hard to build, set up and operate, Heck even I was a kid when these came out. I'm more of a vic 20 or c64 guy or really an Apple IIe or my all time dream computer as a kid, the Timex Sinclair.
