Ghost out the lamp

Background is a picture of the Abu Dhabi desert. Taken March 2019.

The Ghost, my daughter cheering when she won a golden medal, Special Olympics Abu Dhabi March 2019.

The lamp, present from my daughter bought in Abu Dhabi March 2019. Photo taken this week.

All blended together.

I was alone at our old country house. It was completely dark, and I brought the oil lamp outside to find a good motif for my new secondhand Nikon camera. Ice and a tiny bit of snow on the ground, and the only photo I produced, was of the lamp itself.

Winw light, fill favorite bottle with candle oil and light the wick, Second wine light in background,

This is a pottery oil lamp, the base shown here is 3-7/8 inch by 2-5/8 inch or 99mm by 67mm. It is all about the eyes.

Looking close...on Friday.

Who said genies didn't know how to joke ?

Smile on Saturday theme Reflections in a Knife. The flames got a little out of hand. The oil in the lamp can catch fire if you're waving the lamp around. I needed a new background anyway. Smile it's Saturday, the old photographer. ,;-/

This is one of my Macro Monday outtakes. I took a few more I may post at at a later date. I liked this shot and figured it should be posted. I don’t usually post my outtakes but I thought I’d give this one a try.

After yesterday's huge domed ceiling, this is something more human in scale. They had actually arranged and fixed old window shutters on the ceiling of the entrance portico of a club or restaurant in Legian, Bali.

Of course today I felt only appropriate to use a speech quote by Martin Luther King.

Protected behind a bulbous glass shield, the flame of that tiny oil lamp can burn for hours, filling the room with a heady scent and projecting ever-changing flickering shadows...

I made use of the last rays of the late afternoon sun to light up sparks of joyful reflections on the metal and glass parts.

The rest is pure magic. 😌

[ Macro disclaimer: The glass shield has a diameter of 5.5cm at its widest. ]

At the neighbours shed, that still isn't mine, don't know if it ever will be, don't think it will survive the move :(

So, have to take advantage of no one living there yet & go whenever I get some inspiration ;)

....did someone say 'goose bumps' ? oh ya, I won't go alone, I had to bribe my son to babysit me ;) lol

Coffee and poetry by gentle light from an oil lamp on a frosty moonlit evening. Technical: single take, manual exposure. The 'moon' is a crescent-shaped hole cut into dark cardboard showing a white shiny card behind, separated by a gap. A flash is hand-held and fired onto the white background so that the light bounces back, through the cutout and back-lights the frost effect (see last week's shot for details) on the window. The flash has a coloured gel to get just the right colour for the moon effect. Phew, that's actually harder to describe than to do!

I can't remember where I got this oil lamp but it supposedly is a replica of a hand held lamp they would use in Jesus' time to light their homes.

I took a clip from an article on ancient oil lamps if you're interested.

Lamps used by the Jews at the time of Jesus were extremely plain. These Herodian lamps lacked any decoration as the pious Jews banned the use of most images on their objects. They did however still retain the functional innovations of the Greeks. On several occasions, Jesus mentions lamps in his teaching. For example, In Matthew 25:1-13, he tells this parable about ten virgins:

“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

365: the 2022 Edition 341/365

Fresh flowers, fresh coffee and some old leatherbound books to read — a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon

Seen at Dad's Garage in Fredonia, Arizona. Hanging vertically by the drivers door is a series of yellow reflectors. A cable attached to them goes into the cab where the driver can pull the cable and move the reflectors into a horizontal position, as a warning to approaching traffic. Also note the carrier with the three smudge pot lamps on the passenger side of the truck. A forerunner to todays flares.

Early wake-up to welcome the warming sun after a long cold night at 6500'.

May your hearts, minds and lives be full of light, joy & peace.

Stained glass in the Inner Sanctuary above the altar of the Bryn Athyn cathedral. Built in the early decades of the 20th century by masons and other craftsmen who had immigrated to Philadelphia, the cathedral was constructed using medieval building techniques to achieve a true gothic cathedral. Bryn Athyn Church is a congregation of the New Church.

The stained glass has images of Jesus and the twelve apostles. The altar holds a copy of the Word that was printed in Antwerp in 1584. Rather than candles, the altar is surrounded by seven oil lamps. The cross is not displayed on the altar.
