117 Pictures in 2017 #46: Off the Beaten Path
This guy is one of the old "Muffler Men" that could be found on Route 66. Prior to super highways, Route 66 was the only "big" roadway to connect Chicago to Los Angeles. If you've ever seen the movie Cars you'll understand what happened to the little towns along Route 66 once super highways came along.
Anyway, this guy has found a home in Atlanta, Illinois, a little out of the way place (it took over an hour of back road driving from my house.) in Central Illinois. While he originally held a muffler, he was purchased by a restaurant owner who switched the car part out for a hot dog. Eventually, the owner got rid of the property, but couldn't bear to part with "Tall Paul" so he loaned it to the town of Atlanta...which also happens to be on Route 66.
This was definitely a fun stop and it makes me want to start a project wherein I seek out these roadside statues or signs or randomly entertaining things. Hmmm...is there a project in my future?

I am completely amazed by the proliferation of #coffee shops in #Sungaipenuh since we've been away. From just one newly opened on, at least 6 or 7 new ones have popped up in about as many months! At Koffia, the owner roasts his own beans, plays the live music, and even cut down the trees for the furniture he built! The Kerinci Seblat National Park has the highest occurrence of tigers within any Sumatran protected area. In fact, we have more tigers in this national park than in Nepal and more than in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and China combined.
Of course, this photo was taken in a zoo.
The Pendung Semurup waterfalls, approximately 15-20 meters in height, can be found on the eastern hills near the town of Semurup, and are reached after an easy, roughly one hour hike through relatively flat farmland and agroforest. the sun came out today.
it put us in a panic to get out and go somewhere. i did a quick search and found coos bay looked like a cool place. half an hour of packing later we're in the 'runner and putting coose bay in the GPS.
162 miles.
well lets just go in that direction...
about thirty miles in, we veer off for silver falls national park.
sounds nice right?
another half an hour later we're in the middle of a snow storm on top of a mountain, surrounded by christmas tree farms.
we weren't exactly dressed the part, as i was wearing sneakers and a sweatshirt, but we tried to make the best of it.
we saw the following weather today (in the space of three hours): sun, snow, sleet, rain (sprinkle and downpour) and fairly high wind.
un-b-freakin-lievable.
oh and this is the road the garmin sent us home on from the top of the mountain.

Overnight camp out in Chiselbury Camp, an Iron Age hill fort on the top of Fovant Down, famous for it's Great War camp badges carved in the chalk of its slopes. A 40+ mile ride from home in Southampton, up to Salisbury via Romsey and the National Cycle Network Route 24, then to Salisbury Racecourse where I picked up the old cattle drove that goes all the way to Shaftesbury.
Dusk falling meant I overshot my destination in the poor light! I rode another mile or two to Ansty before realising my mistake, and had to backtrack, so by the time I reached the old fort I had missed the sunset there and it was properly dark.
The sunrise made up for that though. Up at 5.30 and a short walk to the chalk cap badges while I brewed up some tea.
Back on the road shortly after, keen to get back before the midday heat.
