Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep this trip and a napping Barn Owl

Devil's Valley lies high in the Caucasus Mountains, near the Jvari Pass. The valley is known for its raw beauty: steep mountains, deep gorges, fast-flowing rivers, and ancient watchtowers. In the past, it was a strategically important area, but also dangerous and difficult to traverse. It earned the nickname “Valley of the Devils” because invaders would often get lost, be ambushed, or simply never return—partly due to the fierce defense by the local population. Few tourists venture here; it feels like a hidden world. Especially outside the summer season, the valley is hard to access. Hikers and off-road adventurers love this kind of terrain, but it’s far from a typical day trip. One of the natural highlights of the area is the Eretos Waterfall. Cascading down a rocky cliff into a narrow gorge, the waterfall is tucked away between forested slopes. The sound of the falling water echoes through the valley, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of the region. It’s a place where nature takes center stage: wild, untouched, and barely marked by human presence. Visiting the waterfall feels like a reward for those willing to explore this rugged landscape.

It lies along the famous Georgian Military Highway, an ancient route that connects Tbilisi with Russia via the Jvari Pass. The landscape displays a mesmerizing contrast between snow-capped peaks and the golden autumn slopes, a characteristic feature of the region in late autumn. De Devil's Valley ligt in de bergen van de Kaukasus, aan de Jvari-pas. De vallei staat bekend om haar ruige schoonheid: steile bergen, diepe kloven, snelstromende rivieren en eeuwenoude wachttorens. Ooit was dit een strategisch belangrijk gebied, maar ook gevaarlijk en moeilijk begaanbaar. De vallei kreeg de bijnaam “Valley of the Devils”, omdat indringers er vaak verdwaalden, werden aangevallen of simpelweg nooit meer terugkeerden — deels vanwege de lokale bevolking die haar land fel verdedigde.
Toeristen komen hier zelden; het voelt als een verborgen wereld. Vooral buiten het zomerseizoen is de vallei lastig toegankelijk. Wandelaars en offroad-liefhebbers zijn dol op dit soort plekken, maar het is geen standaard dagtrip. Eén van de natuurlijke parels in deze regio is de Eretos-waterval. Deze waterval stort zich tussen de rotsen naar beneden in een smalle kloof, verscholen tussen de beboste hellingen. Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. For adventure seekers, it's possible to continue the hike to the nearby Gergeti Glacier, making the journey a full-day excursion.
The journey to the waterfall is a true challenge, yet also a breathtaking experience. The trail winds through rugged, arid terrain with steep inclines and loose rocks. Hikers must be well-prepared, as certain sections can be demanding and exhausting. However, the reward upon arrival is well worth it: a refreshing breeze from the waterfall and a stunning panoramic view. The waterfall in the foreground contrasts strikingly with the dry surroundings, creating a spectacular natural destination. The steep slopes and untouched wilderness highlight both the challenge and the extraordinary beauty of this remote location.
Nabij het dorp Arsha in de Kazbek regio, ligt de Arsha-waterval, op ongeveer vijf kilometer van Stepantsminda Kazbegi. De wandeling naar de waterval wordt als eenvoudig beschouwd en duurt doorgaans drie tot vier uur. Het pad is ongebaand maar goed begaanbaar, omringd door weelderige weiden en biedt prachtige uitzichten op de omliggende bergen. De waterval is één van de minder bekende natuurlijke attracties in het gebied, wat bijdraagt aan de ongerepte en serene sfeer. Luosto is a scenic tourist destination located in the heart of Lapland, Finland. Luosto is a destination that will appeal to nature lovers and adventurers alike, offering a unique combination of Arctic wilderness and exciting outdoor activities. It is an ideal place to enjoy the peace and beauty of Lapland, away from the hustle and bustle of urban areas.
Luosto is a well-known tourist destination in Lapland, Finland, situated in the municipality of Sodankylä. It is celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings, winter activities, and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We embarked early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature appears to be in a deep winter slumber. Due to avalanche danger, we couldn't climb the eastern side of Mount Ukko-Luosto. Starting from the ski resort, we now plan to climb the mountain from the northern side, a 6.5 km route. A challenging ascent leads to the Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut, a great place to take a break and enjoy the view.

[Yazd, Iran] The very unique and characteristic skyline of domes, minarets and wind catching towers (or badgirs) of Yazd, a silk road city of Iran preserving intact many beautiful traditions and traditional Persian architectural features. The Jame' or congregational mosque stands out with its larger turquoise dome and tall minarets.

Nestled in the mountains of Mtskheta-Mtianeti, the Zhinvali Reservoir is a striking turquoise lake formed by a dam on the Aragvi River in 1985. Beyond supplying drinking water and electricity to Tbilisi, the lake is renowned for its breathtaking views—framed by forested hills and snow-dusted peaks. Overlooking the water stands the Ananuri Fortress, a 16th–17th-century stronghold once home to the powerful Dukes of Aragvi. Its soaring towers and the richly carved Church of the Savior reflect the artistry and strategic genius of medieval Georgia. The fortress played a crucial role in defending the region and today offers sweeping views over the reservoir. High above, near the ancient town of Mtskheta, rises the Jvari Monastery—a 6th-century marvel perched on a hilltop where Georgia’s conversion to Christianity is said to have begun. From here, the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers unfolds below, echoing the timeless serenity of this sacred place. Jvari’s harmonious stone architecture and spiritual legacy make it a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Georgia’s Christian heritage.

Het Zhinvali-reservoir is een schitterend turkoois stuwmeer in de bergen van Mtskheta-Mtianeti, ontstaan in 1985 door de bouw van een dam in de rivier de Aragvi. Het voorziet Tbilisi van drinkwater en elektriciteit, maar is vooral geliefd om zijn adembenemende landschap van bergen, bossen en helderblauw water. Aan de oever ligt het indrukwekkende Ananuri-fort, een 16e–17e-eeuws verdedigingscomplex dat ooit dienstdeed als zetel van de hertogen van Aragvi. De massieve torens en de rijk versierde Verlosserkerk tonen de schoonheid en kracht van de middeleeuwse Georgische architectuur. Het fort speelde een sleutelrol in de verdediging van de regio en biedt vandaag een van de mooiste uitzichten van het land. Hogerop, nabij de oude hoofdstad Mtskheta, prijkt het 6e-eeuwse Jvari-klooster op een heuveltop, precies waar volgens de overlevering het christendom zijn intrede deed in Georgië. Vanaf hier kijk je uit over de samenvloeiing van de rivieren Aragvi en Mtkvari – een plaats vol rust, historie en spiritualiteit. Het klooster staat, net als Ananuri, op de UNESCO-Werelderfgoedlijst.

Piva lake is an artificial lake, the result of the construction of Mratinje Dam on the Piva river in 1975. Its landscape is marked by dense stands of trees, limestone plateaus with some spectacular canyons formed by the Tara, Piva, Komarnica and Sušica rivers.

I ran across this unusual store in Doswell, Virginia in 2006 not too far off of Interstate 95. It is an antique store. It gets it's name from when people put a penny on railroad tracks (located to the left of this frame) so a train can flatten it.

Taken in Porvoo, Finland. I was sitting at the Gabriel 1763 restaurant across the street. Porvoo is a nice little tourist town and a good day trip from Helsinki. In this part of Finland, signs have Finnish first, Swedish under it, and sometimes English as a third.. In the photo above, the street is know as Jokikatu in Finnish and Ågatan in Swedish.
The old part of town has quite a few nice restaurants and gift shops. Nearby is a pleasant walk along the river (or channel). There are many beautiful boats along the shore.

The journey from Wadi Al-Shab to Wadi Tiwi offered a mix of rugged landscapes and quiet mountain villages. The steep dirt road wound through dramatic cliffs, patches of greenery, and simple homes that felt frozen in time. The villages, often perched on cliffs or nestled in wadis, reflect a deep connection to the land, with families relying on agriculture and ancient falaj irrigation systems. Unlike other parts of Oman, the locals here seemed shy and somewhat unwelcoming, making us feel like intruders in their secluded world.

Almost nothing of what can be seen in this photograph (except for the smaller buildings in the distance) existed some 10 years: no modern buildings, no park, no lake, no beach, no bridge. Hefei is a landmark example of how China renovated and rapidly expanded its provincial centers in the early 21st century.

Nye Beach in Newport, Oregon. Fun little beach with some shops and dining. It was “COVID Quiet” like many other places we stopped. We sat on a bench at the turnaround just above the beach and enjoyed the view. Easy parking, easy access to the beach. And the few people we saw were friendly. It was a great stop.

Spent the day watching the seasons change in Eastern Oregon, with big dramatic skies and snowcapped mountain peaks. Spring is starting to arrive on the valley floor but winter is still holding on up in the Elkhorns.

Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. For adventure seekers, it's possible to continue the hike to the nearby Gergeti Glacier, making the journey a full-day excursion.
The journey to the waterfall is a true challenge, yet also a breathtaking experience. The trail winds through rugged, arid terrain with steep inclines and loose rocks. Hikers must be well-prepared, as certain sections can be demanding and exhausting. However, the reward upon arrival is well worth it: a refreshing breeze from the waterfall and a stunning panoramic view. The waterfall in the foreground contrasts strikingly with the dry surroundings, creating a spectacular natural destination. Nabij het dorp Arsha in de Kazbek regio, ligt de Arsha-waterval, op ongeveer vijf kilometer van Stepantsminda Kazbegi. De wandeling naar de waterval wordt als eenvoudig beschouwd en duurt doorgaans drie tot vier uur. Het pad is ongebaand maar goed begaanbaar, omringd door weelderige weiden en biedt prachtige uitzichten op de omliggende bergen. De waterval is één van de minder bekende natuurlijke attracties in het gebied, wat bijdraagt aan de ongerepte en serene sfeer. Kanitha, met een rugzak, baant zich een weg omhoog langs een smal pad, omringd door droge grassen en struiken. De waterval op de achtergrond contrasteert met het dorre terrein en vormt een prachtig natuurlijk doel. Nog iets verder ligt de Toti-waterval, bereikbaar via een steil pad dat bovenlangs de Arsha-waterval loopt. Deze waterval biedt spectaculaire panoramische uitzichten en is een ideale plek voor een picknick. Bezoekers kunnen hier genieten van de rust, de natuur en zelfs een verfrissende duik nemen in het heldere water. Voor avonturiers is het mogelijk om verder te trekken naar de nabijgelegen Gergeti-gletsjer, wat de wandeling tot een dagvullende activiteit maakt.

A beautiful New Year’s Day exploring the Burnt River Canyon and watching wildlife between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon with lots of Bighorn Sheep out to help us ring in the new year.
The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep in rut during this trip
