"The Glass House is the 3rd & most dramatic residence that Charles & Vanna Rae built. It’s one of 19 structures that now stand on the property. Solar panels provide electricity, & a dug-in greenhouse below the living area shelters potatoes, lettuces, herbs, tomatoes, & other foods.
Construction began in 1991 & was completed in 1992, as Charles & Vanna Rae continued to farm & manage the property. They built the house w/ timber milled on-site & mostly salvaged materials. The home’s unique parabolic roof was designed to compliment the ridgeline views outside the massive windows. Charles had previously experimented w/ this type of roof on some of his spec homes, most notably on a 1965 house in Santa Rosa, CA, w/ 5 parabolas, still standing at 1610 Manzanita Ave."

Charles & Vanna Rae built it for $8,500 w/ timber they milled themselves, using salvaged materials for everything from doorknobs to stoves. The couple relied on photovoltaics, solar thermal & gas for power and a dug-in greenhouse attached to the home provided much of their food. By canning & preserving, they could go for months w/out going to a grocery store. Their two boys were homeschooled. The couple supported themselves selling Christmas trees."
