A number of studies, the latest by The Lancet, have found that current smokers are significantly less likely to catch the coronavirus. Even those in at risk groups such as the obese and diabetics have a greatly reduced chance of catching COVID if they are current smokers. Ex-smokers don't have any reduction in risk at all. There is uncertainty as to the reason but the most plausible hypothesis is that inhaled nicotine binds to the ACE-2 receptors that coronavirus exploits and therefore prevents a higher viral load from getting in. Don't all rush for the cigarettes though! The double-edged sword is that if smokers do catch this virus, the already damaged lungs mean that they are statistically more likely to suffer serious disease and require intensive medical care.
The Lancet study is a very interesting read if you are that way inclined. Thought I would share one of the weirder and unexpected aspects of this novel coronavirus. There is still so much to learn. Stay safe everyone!

Americans Grow To Fit Their Environment
What started as a humorous observation got me thinking about the veracity of the statement. I thought "people are getting bigger" and "houses are getting bigger", how do they relate? In this environment of Googleified immediate access to random data, I had the opportunity to go figure that out, in my own non-scientific way. Very quickly I was able to locate the data that I required to figure out whether Americans did have the tendency to grow to fit their environment. I am not picking specifically on Americans, its just that housing is typically constrained in many other places around the world. If one were motivated, they could put a finer point on this amusement by looking at regional trends in both datasets.
I'll leave the conclusions up to you. Keep in mind that this is pure amusement and not terribly scientific any any way.

This drawing was inspired by a photo from Yantra X. It's a fat dragonfly;-) They're quite rare.
