Between the pandemic and a foot injury I'm home bound for awhile so I've decided to dig into the archive to find some hidden treasures and to re-work some photos. This is a re-work of a previously published photo.

The Texas Medical Center in Houston is the world's largest medical center and arguably the best medical center in the world. It is also home to some unique and interesting architecture. The Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) part of the the Texas Children's Hospital is characterized by its iconic "collaborative tower" — a glass-encased helical tower with panoramic views — which serves as an area where scientists can meet and collaborate. Next to it is the John P. McGovern TMC Commons with its 60-foot water wall.

As always, your faves and comments are appreciated. Constructive criticism and suggestions are especially welcome as I believe they help to make me a better photographer. Thank you for taking the time to look at my photos.

CPKC's Royal Canadian Pacific southbound on the Pittsburg Subdivision between Kansas City and Joplin, Missouri.

On the 3rd of september I was spending some free time in and around Basingstoke. I was based near Middle-Wallop for 2 weeks, which was nearby enough. During the morning I sadly missed a really nice train. The downside of not being able to get there any sooner and a bus not showing up at Andover bus station. But in the late afternoon there would be a test train running through Basingstoke. I would be able to get it on photo twice if I was lucky. Of course I had realtimetrains to get me updated, but a friend working at Basingstoke ROC would keep an eye on the train as well.

About half an hour before the test train would be in Basingstoke it began to rain. Really heavy showers. So I found shelter in a pedestrian tunnel nearby and waited it out. I planned to walk back to the trainway just in time. So 3 minutes before the train would be there I started walking back in the rain and found a position. Then just a mere minute before the train arrived, the rain stopped. When the 73962 came into view there were only a few occassional drops of rain falling. And in the end it would also turn out that I was able to catch up with this train twice, instead of once. Lucky days!

Sindoor Khela (Vermilion Play)

A colourful farewell festival on ‘Bijoya Dashami’ (last day of the Durga Puja), marked with 'Sindoor Khela' or, smearing of the red vermilion. The ritual is famous throughout Bengal and is believed to be dated back to time when the tradition of Durga puja started nearly 400 years ago.

Bengali married women adorning traditional dresses converge at the makeshift temples to bid farewell to the Goddess and her four children with vermilion (sindoor) and sweets. After bidding her farewell, the married women smear one another with sindoor, and greet each other with sweets, and pray for their long and happy married lives.

In recent news, the NRI has joined the collective union of NATO, and has begun to deploy troops into Southern India, along with the other troops in NATO. Here, in a leaked photo an amateur photographer uploaded to the internet, whilst on vacation, we can see the NRI troops coming up the beach, heading into the jungle. The photographer was found a few hours later, along with the body shown here, strewn on the beach. It is clear that the NRI mean business, and are not to be trifled with. More updates as events warrant.

Shreya Guhathakurta

One of the leading lights of the new generation of Rabindrasangeet singers, daughter of Saswati and Bhishma Guhathakurta.

A talented youngster, former student of Dakshinee, the premier Rabindrasangeet school in south Calcutta, presently lives in Paris but spends a lot of time doing performances in India.

Shreya was influenced by Rabindrasangeet legend Kanika Bandopadhyay. In her latest album, Anandadhara, she has sung (though in her own style) some of the songs which were earlier immortalised by Kanika Bandopadhyay.

The Donoho Hotel, located in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee, is a historic resort hotel built in 1916 after its predecessor burned down in 1915. Constructed by Brady Chitwood and his wife Tennie, it replaced an earlier hotel established around 1901 by Squire Donoho. One of three surviving hotels from the town's early-20th-century resort boom, the Donoho is the last remaining grand white frame hotel featuring full-length two-story verandas. Continuously operated since opening, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 as the Donoho Hotel Historic District, encompassing the hotel, several outbuildings, and approximately 4 acres.

Red Boiling Springs developed as a spa destination in the 19th century due to its mineral-rich springs, believed to have curative properties. Tourism grew after the Civil War, accelerated by improved transportation, including stagecoach service and a nearby railroad in the 1890s. The Donoho offered guests five types of mineral water ("freestone," "White," "Red," "Black," and the potent "Double and Twist") along with recreational activities like dancing, bowling, and swimming. Though the resort era declined mid-century, renovations in the 1950s modernized the hotel while preserving its original appearance.

Architecturally, the Donoho is a two-story weatherboard structure in a T-shaped layout with Bungalow and Colonial Revival influences. Its prominent verandas, supported by large columns, provide access to most guest rooms. The property includes a 1924 manager’s house (Donoho House), a late-1890s fruit cellar, a 1916 washhouse, and modern additions like an entertainment center. Situated along Salt Lick Creek with red-painted spring pumps marking mineral water sources, the hotel remains a symbol of Red Boiling Springs’ historic resort heritage.

UPDATE: This hotel suffered a substantial fire three weeks after this photo was taken:
