The black flag means no surrender. This is OUR black flag, blending the estelada of the independence of Catalonia with the cross of Saint Eulalia, the banner of the Coronela, the 1714 milita of Barcelona. We still stand here, no surrender. Freedom for Catalonia.

With the iconic Torre Agbar skyscraper at the background, independence "estelada" (starred) flags are joined by the newer "black flag" of no surrender. It mixes the old 1714 original black flag (all black with the motto "lliures o morts", free or dead) with the cross of Sta. Eulalia, patron of the defenders of Barcelona in that war, and the star of the independence flag.

The Memorial statue of The Spartan King Leonidas at Thermopylae, Greece where the famous battle took place. The inscription " Molon Labe" translates to " come and take them " . The reply given by Leonidas when the Persians ordered him to lay down his weapons.
The inscription ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ means " Come and take them ! "

It was a lifelong ambition to visit Sparta. I am in love with the history of Ancient Greece. The ancient ruins are about 400 yards behind the statue beyond the stadium.
Just me and the camera on ten second timer. 40 degrees heat!! it was an insane steep climb up through thick bushes to the ancient Phocian wall. Amazing experience.
Here is where the Last stand of The 300 Spartans took place at Thermopylae. Herodotus the only contemporary Historian to record the event tells us that over a million plus Persians attacked this spot over a three day period. Defended on the third and final day by 300 Spartans, a small number of Thespians and some Thebans ( The Thebans deserted and swapped sides at the start of fighting on the third day! ). The Spartans by now had no spears left ( all broken ) and most had broken their other weapon of choice, the short sword. Herodotus tells us " They fought with their hands, nails and teeth " So ferociuos was the defence that the Persians withdrew and The Persian King ordered his thousands upon thousands of archers to finish the Spartans off at long range!
Anyone who saw the Film 300, this is the wall the Spartans were building up!

Tot el dia 11 de Novembre del 2019 i quasi tot el 12, varem tenir tallada la autopista AP7 entre El Pertús (primer), La Jonquera (segón) i Girona/Salt (tercer). Apart d'una hora o màxim dues, la comunicació amb Europa està tallada des de fa més d'un dia i mig!
Aquest és el tall de la N-II al seu pas per La Jonquera.

In the early days of November 2019, several important links of the Spanish state have been denied to them by the Catalan people, under the organization of Tsunami Democràtic. AP7 highway, the most important in Catalonia, has been closed from 8 AM on monday till at least the night of the next day.
And the "cuts" are multiplying as I write: Girona, Calldetenes, Puigcerdà, the entrances to Barcelona, Amposta, Tarragona... even in the Basque Country in Hendaia!!!

My father was a Desert Rat and was part of the British Army's defence of Tobruk during the Second World War.
The siege and fierce fighting lasted for 241 hard fought days.
Tobruk was subject to repeated ground assaults and constant shelling and the term "Desert Rats" originated from Lord Haw -Haw in his broadcasts.
My father lost many friends during the long siege and battle for Tobruk.

The Black Flag, in western symbolism means no surrender, it's the antagonist of the white flag of surrender. In the dramatic siege of Barcelona and Cardona, in the war of 1714, a black flag with the words "Viurem lliures o morirem" flough on the walls; it meant "We'll live free or we'll die". An American similar emblem just 60 years later, was the "join or die". Three hundred years later, a modern black flag unites the Santa Eulalia cross, tha one of the most potent symbols of Catalan political freedom, and the star of the modern "starry" flag of Catalan independence. No surrender till Victory and Freedom from Spain (and France).

Feeling some performance anxiety because this photo is very special - it's our 1,000th photo on Flickr Commons! However, it's also special in that it's a quite rare (we think) capture of an eviction in a town. Most that we have are in rural settings. We thought this may have been taken in September 1887 around the time of the "Mitchelstown Massacre", but as always, research here was a great help in establishing a more likely date of June 1887...

This is part of the celebrations held by The Apprentice Boys every 13 August to celebrate the relief of the city in 1691. The Fountain estate is a small Protestant/Loyalist enclave on the Nationalist/Catholic west side of the city and is the only remaining Protestant area on the western side of the River Foyle.
