NOT A GULL, a relative of the shearwaters and petrels, please note at close range its tube nostrils, and in-flight by its stiffly held wings and effortless gliding action, masters at their craft, and very vocal , a mixture of various gurgling cackles and grunts. This pair are showing affection. They love our local chalk cliffs for nesting

I like how the water looks coming off his eye and the bit of pink you can see in his nostril, LOL!

Didn't check settings before shooting so the shutter speed's too slow. Only thing really in focus is his nearest eye and his nostrils. But I love the shot of him Anyway.
He's such a beautiful tricolor bay which is probably one of my favorite horse colors, although, a good horse never comes in a bad color.
I'm mad at myself that I didn't get his mane braided up before my surgery so right now it's pretty much tangled and in dreadlocks so you can't see the length.
I'm waiting for a day with some sun where I can take the time to wash and braid it again, but it's going to take several hours just to get that done because it's so tangled and I won't cut it. So I'll have to put a ton of conditioner on it and just gently work out the tangles until I can brush and braid it again.
Since my surgery, standing in one place for very long isn't something that's comfortable but I think I'm getting to the point where I can do it soon. Hopefully I can get back to riding this beautiful boy again, too!
Now I need to get a good photo of Cav to share.
Elongated nostrils , three sets of eyelids and two rows of eyelashes on each eye . They also have thick lips . All are adaptations to keep sand away from their eyes and able to eat thorny plants without hurting their lips .

Two fairly recent acquisitions by Grasslands National Park - the former Dixon and Walker ranches - lie outside the current, fenced-in, 181-square-km "bison zone". Here, Parks Canada supervises grazing leases, because healthy prairie is grazed prairie. And that is why visitors driving through this area sometimes see cows and horses. Cows are the main domestic grazing animal, but they can hardly be considered friendly. Perhaps deep down they know that we are likely to eat them. Horses, on the other hand, have a closer, more simpatico relationship with us humans.
All of which is a roundabout way of explaining how this photo came into being. It was a slow wildlife day. This small herd of horses was grazing near the road, so I stopped for a visit. They were cautious, but approached when I meandered into the field, speaking softly to them. I can tell when horses are treated well: they aren't afraid of strangers. A couple of them allowed me to scratch behind their ears and breathe gently into their nostrils (which gives them a lot of information about me) and - of course - shoot away through my wide angle zoom.
Important note: they don't have to subsist on meagre winter grasses. They get fed, too. The hay bales produced here, largely alfalfa, provide high quality nutrition. Meanwhile, they have unlimited space to roam as they please.

Early in the morning on one of those rare winter days when intense cold and heavy snow coincide, a Gray Jay is fully fluffed up for protection. The bird was unusually calm, likely because it needed to protect calories and hunker down low out of the wind.
These Jays fluff up more than most winter birds, and even have fluffing feathers lining their nostrils. On a morning like this one every available fluffing feather was deployed. That makes the image, which was focused on the eyes, look very fluffy, but I am fine with that.

A bientôt.
The photographer who blew into horses' nostrils
Normandy (France) - An unusual image, not to say exotic in my usual production. These horses were photographed in the south of the Manche department, on the road that leads me from Brécey to Mont-Saint-Michel. A region that has not sacrificed its hundred-year-old hedges for the benefit of agricultural profitability. Breeders in the region have specialized in pleasure horses for driving. They therefore have little chance of ending up in the butcher's shop... For the moment.
This archive photo is relaxing compared to my latest images of the protests against the pension reform. It is also the last one that will be published on Flickr before my departure for Southeast Asia. See you soon.

from the All About Birds website:
"The gray-and-white Northern Fulmar looks like a gull, but its stiff-winged flight and swift glides, not to mention the nostril tubes on its bill, mark it as a relative of petrels and albatrosses. These stout-bodied seabirds are abundant in the bitterly cold northern Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans, where they feed over deep waters. They use their powerful sense of smell to sniff out fish, squid, and crustaceans. After a short breeding season at colonies on steep cliffs, they return to the open ocean for the rest of the year.
When nesting, fulmars generally forage in the vicinity of their colonies but sometimes travel more than 600 miles round trip to procure food for the nestling.
The Northern Fulmar is one of the longest-lived birds, with adults regularly living into their 30s. In Scotland, several Northern Fulmars banded as adults in 1951 were still breeding in 1990, probably in their 50s."

Gannet - Morus Bassanus
The gannets are large white birds with yellowish heads; black-tipped wings; and long bills. Northern gannets are the largest seabirds in the North Atlantic, having a wingspan of up to 2 metres (6.6 ft). The other two species occur in the temperate seas around southern Africa, southern Australia and New Zealand.
Gannets hunt fish by diving into the sea from a height and pursuing their prey underwater. Gannets have a number of adaptations which enable them to do this:
no external nostrils, they are located inside the mouth instead;
air sacs in the face and chest under the skin which act like bubble wrapping, cushioning the impact with the water;
positioning of the eyes far enough forward on the face for binocular vision, allowing them to judge distances accurately.
Gannets can dive from a height of 30 metres (98 ft), achieving speeds of 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) as they strike the water, enabling them to catch fish much deeper than most airborne birds.
The gannet's supposed capacity for eating large quantities of fish has led to "gannet" becoming a description of somebody with a voracious appetite.
Gannets are colonial breeders on islands and coasts, normally laying one chalky, blue egg. Gannets lack brood patches and they use their webbed feet to warm the eggs. It takes five years for gannets to reach maturity. First-year birds are completely black, and subsequent sub-adult plumages show increasing amounts of white.
The most important nesting ground for northern gannets is the United Kingdom with about two thirds of the world's population. These live mainly in Scotland, including the Shetland Isles. The rest of the world's population is divided between Canada, Ireland, Faroe Islands and Iceland, with small numbers in France (they are often seen in the Bay of Biscay), the Channel Islands, Norway and a single colony in Germany on Heligoland. The biggest northern gannet colony is on Scotland's Bass Rock; in 2014, this colony contained some 75,000 pairs. Sulasgeir off the coast of the Isle of Lewis, St. Kilda, Grassholm in Pembrokeshire, Bempton Cliffs in the East Riding of Yorkshire, Sceilig Bheag, Ireland and Bonaventure Island, Quebec are also important northern gannet breeding sites.
Young gannets were historically used as a food source, a tradition still practised in Ness, Scotland, where they are called "guga". Like examples of continued traditional whale harvesting, the modern day hunting of gannet chicks results in great controversies as to whether it should continue to be afforded "exemption from the ordinary protection afforded to sea birds in UK and EU law". The Ness hunt is currently limited to 2,000 chicks per year, and dates back at least to the Iron Age. The hunt is considered to be sustainable, as between 1902 and 2003 Gannet numbers in Scotland increased dramatically from 30,000 to 180,000.

Found on the gravel plains, the sand deserts and the mountains is the Arabian gazelle. Its natural range extended right across the northern Emirates, only avoiding the very soft sandy areas of the Liwa into which only the sand gazelle would venture. It has a delicate body, weighing only 10 to 14 kgs and can reach speeds of 65 kms per hour if it needs to escape danger. The mountain gazelle has a pure white belly with a dark to black stripe on its flanks that changes to dark beige or brown on the back, the neck and the head. The facial markings consist of various shades of brown with two white stripes extending from the eyes towards the nostrils. Females give birth to their single fawn during any month, but with natural peaks in spring and autumn. Most grazing activity takes place at dawn and dusk. They rest during the hottest hours of the day under any shelter available, which may be a cave for those that inhabit the mountains.
Usually moving in small groups of four to six animals, they are highly territorial, with the dominant male continuously marking its territory with a wax-like substance which it produces in glands below the eyes. The substance is deposited by rubbing its head against a bush, a branch or a stone. The group also maintains several places within its territory which they establish as “toilets”. The animals usually only defecate and urinate at these sites. As with oryx and sand gazelle they do not need to drink water, but will readily do so if water is available. (arabianwildlife.com)

We were searching for the Pharoah Eagle-Owl at dusk when a family of these beautiful gazelles appeared. They picked their way across and down the steep mountain side as easily as if they were walking along a road. Their presence made up for the fact tht the owl did not put in an appearance, which was one of the target birds that we did not find on this trip (luckily, we had seen the owl in Morocco a few years previously).

Sophie inhaled deeply through her nose, held her breath and then exhaled, her nostrils flaring as she did so. She repeated her breathing a few times and then started jumping on pointe, holding her arms ramrod straight and stiff by her side, yet allowing her wrists to be loose and her hands to flap about like tiny wings. The excitement around her in the wings was palpable as members of the corps de ballet gathered about, giggling, gasping, pointing at her whilst looking at her imposing figure and costume with admiration, smiling shyly at her.
It was not so very long ago that Sophie had been a member of this troupe that made up the backbone of the performance. She had danced her way through as a member of the swan flock countless times in Swan Lake and as a snowflake in the Nutcracker. She had worked her way up over the years, entering as an Élève – an apprentice – before becoming a member of the Quadrille where she danced in line with all the others, supporting the principal dancers. When the ballet staged La Bayadère, Sophie was invited to be one of the three Coryphées – fitrst artists – to lead the he corps de ballet through the intricate, repeated patterns of Les Ombres, and she excelled herself. After playing various faeries in Sleeping Beauty, and friends to the leads in Giselle and Don Quixote over time, she proved herself to move up to a Grand Sujet and play Pas de Trois in Swan Lake. Now after all this time, she was no longer playing a Lead Sylph in Les Sylphides, or performing the Peasant Pas de Deux in Giselle. She was a Premier Danseur, and about to make her debut as Cinderella.
And then her moment came and Sophie found herself on stage. As she danced beneath the theatre’s spotlight, she felt the happiness, the exhilaration, the jubilation she always did as she performed with grace on pointe. Although her performance was highly orchestrated, dancing gave Sophie a sense of freedom she never felt at any other time in her life. She needed no wings to fly, only her dainty feet to lift her up and spin her again, and again as again with precision and perfection. Her heart soared high above her, beating with pride. When she finished her first solo as she puffed ragged breaths in and out, all she could hear was the thud of her heartbeats pulsating in her ears. Then it began: the clapping of a pair of hands, two, ten, a hundred, several hundred, a crescendo of applause lifting her spirits higher. It was at that moment, as blinded by the brightness of the spotlight, she made a deep curtsey to her unseen audience beyond the harsh whiteness, Sophie knew she was where she belonged. She was a success! She was home!
The other day I received a purchase from Etsy of an envelope full of beautifully laser cut ballerinas made of crisp white paper. I was particularly enamoured by this lovely one and her exuberant pose. It was a cloudy and overcast day, but I still managed to create a spotlight for this beauty against a black background.
This image I would like to dedicate to my dear Flickr friend FinouCat who loves dancing in all its forms. My wish for her is that she rises on pointe like ma petite danseuse.
A simple portrait of a Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) - in ancient Greek the name means "river horse." Marvels of evolution, these animals have eyes, ears and nostrils placed on the top of their skulls, which allows these parts to remain above water while the rest of the very large body is submerged underwater.

During the winter months in the Po Valley , the fog is a part of the landscape, cold, dump, almost tangible.
Fog is moisture in the nostrils, is a limited landscapes. You feel isolated, almost blinded by the white. The gaze is limited and the fog tracks the boundaries.
There are places you always pass by, common places that turn invisible, canceled by the chaos of buildings and constructions.
The fog, greedy of space, grants you the crumbs of what encompasses, defines the boundaries forcibly, giving back, sarcastically, the most common details.
These details turn unique, eye-catching, aesthetically ready for photographic consecration.
The streets, the buildings and the fields are transformed into landscapes that you can only imagine. A pole, the wires of the light, a gasoline station is all that you can see.
They are the boundaries the fog gives you.”
CONFINI
Although our largest land carnivore, less than 2% of their attempts to catch prey are successful. With their powerful nostrils they are able to detect seal breathing holes up to a meter away. Once found they patiently wait for the seals to make an appearance. Other than that they will settle for smaller mammals, carcasses, eggs and even plant food.
Even though their favourite habitat is pack ice, open sea and coastal land, they will wander as far as 200 kilometres inland in search iof food. In spite of this, there are presently about 26,000 in the wild, of which 60% are found in Canada, and they live to about 25 years of age.
Global warming has made them a vulnerable species, which would help explain their diminishing numbers. In fact, compared to their predecessors of the early C20th, they have shrunk in size. It is during the summer months that they are particular hard hit, when much of the ice recedes.
Keep blessed and keep safe!

We all sniff in stereo, some of us more than others!
This is a pair of nostrils belonging to Cookie the Black Lab. Sniffing is Cookie's favourite pastime. He is sitting here with great control and sniffing the treats that I was feeding him for his pose - he doesn't like the camera much but nothing a bit of bribary can't sort out HMM! 😄
The smell of the sea,
of kelp and fish and bitter moving water,
rose stronger in my nostrils.
It flooded my consciousness like an ancestral memory.
The swells rose sluggishly and fell away,
casting up dismal gleams between the boards of the pier.
And the whole pier rose and fell in stiff and creaking mimicry, dancing its long slow dance of dissolution.
I reached the end and saw no one, heard nothing
but my footsteps and the creak of the beams,
the slap of waves on the pilings.
It was a fifteen-foot drop to the dim water.
The nearest land ahead of me was Hawaii.

I was shooting with a pretty slow shutter speed when he started shaking the water off his head. He was just sitting in the river by the banks under some willow branches grabbing a salmon here and there as they'd float by him. Was hoping I'd get at least one nostril in focus. I did, LOL. Thought it made for a kinda cool shot
I hope you can view this on a larger screen. You'll get a much better appreciation for the photo
Nostrils flared, eyes that were designed to focus underwater - what do they see when the animal surfaces? I have no idea.
Seals are a common sight along the west coast, but rarely as close as this. In Victoria, this one was hanging out at a marina, hoping for fish scraps. Easy pickings, but it does epitomize the negative aspect of our relationship with most wild animals.
I believe restrictions were placed on this spot in recent years due to fear that some child would get injured. I'm fine with that; these critters are not pets. To treat them as such does them a great disservice, and to involve children teaches them a false lesson about how to interact with wild creatures.
It was a great photo op, though.

The Atlantic Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis auduboni) is a large, stocky tubenosed seabird about 45–53 cm long, with a thick, tubular-nostrilled bill and highly variable plumage ranging from very pale gray-and-white to much darker forms; auduboni is generally the larger-billed, boreal Atlantic form of the Northern Fulmar. It is strongly pelagic outside the breeding season, gliding low over the sea on stiff wings and feeding on fish, squid, crustaceans and carrion, often locating food by smell. It breeds colonially on coastal cliffs and rocky islands around the lower-Arctic and temperate North Atlantic, from southeastern Canada and Newfoundland eastward through Greenland and Iceland to the British Isles and northern Europe, with birds dispersing widely over the North Atlantic after breeding. The taxonomic treatment of auduboni varies: it is recognized as a subspecies by ITIS and several modern references, while some authorities have questioned whether it should be separated from the nominate F. g. glacialis. The Northern Fulmar species is classified as Least Concern globally, although marine pollution, particularly ingestion of plastic, and changes in marine food availability remain conservation concerns.

Just thinking! What are the eyes going to look like against the Google search screen? Oops....I mean nostrils!
A whiff of whisky flirted with his nostrils. Real or imagined? He did not know, because there was no bottle or glass on the rock next to him but somehow he could smell it. Glenfiddich he reckoned. 12 year old. It misted his eyes as they scanned the horizon, distant pointy faded blue peaks......islands in the stream. Dreamy. The isles of Muck, Eigg and Rum.
He always wanted to see into the future, over the horizon. This is his new horizon, recently discovered, but lying unexplored. New horizons, future dreams.
Behind him were mistakes and dreams of the past, Failures, challenges never overcome. Unfulfilled.
And dreams of the present, hovering between here and the islands. Could he carry them into the future? Life only travels in one direction. No going back. Although it would be nice. For some things, now just memories, locked away in a compartment at the back of the mind, to be lifted out carefully every so often, burnished and savoured for one more lift of the heart.
Oh yes, it is Glenfiddich. Not tasted for about 40 years. Distinctive. Another memory of a different era when all of life still lay on the horizon. And he could hear trance music too.
But what of the here and now? What, where? So many unknowns' Life, all so weird.

The closer one is, I think, a Black Headed Gull in non breeding plumage and probably a grown up: I found all that on www, www.wwt.org.uk/ and also, elsewhere, that seagulls have nostrils, not only for breathing but excreting salt, allowing them to drink sea-water. Clever ! For those interested in nostrils, they are also, here, (seagulls) known as external nares: and why not, as Barry Norman would have said, if asked.
I can be corrected if I'm wrong, as I may be and often am.

CONFINI
