The earliest form of pleated linen dates from ancient Egypt and can be seen in a garment known as the Tarkhan dress, which is over 5000 years old and is believed to be one of the oldest dresses in existence.Other examples of pleated linen from ancient history include pleated linen from the tomb of queen Neferu. It is not known exactly how the Egyptians pleated linen, but the material may have been "folded, accordion style, then tied, and wetted."

The Gallery's 's own notice says that in the New Kingdom weft threads were collected in batches and woven together at the edge of the cloth to form pleats. Sometimes clothese were washed in a resinous substance and the pleats were then pressed with a heavy tool. The process had to be repeated after each wash.

Figures of captives were made from different materials to be used in the ritual of Protecting the Land and the King inside the temple. Thus,spells were recited on them and then tied ith ropes and placed in the fire to destroy the enemies of Egypt. Mofreover, they were buried in the corners of the temple or forts to eliminate their evil as well.

Artist: Mahmoud Mokhtar 1891-1934, is considered a pioneer of modern Egyptian art. He participated in demonstrations for independence and created statues to express national identity, calling for social and political reform and was an influential member of the Wafd Party.

A project of the NMEC Sunday School department where the kids fill these up with their spare change. The proceeds will be used to buy gifts, toys and much needed medicine for the under-privileged pediatric and juvenile cancer patients of a local public hospital.
