This robin-sized nightbird is common over much of the east, including in city parks and shady suburbs, where many human residents are unaware they have an owl for a neighbor. The owl spends the day roosting in holes or in dense cover, becoming active at dusk. Despite the name, screech-owls do not screech; the voice of this species features whinnies and soft trills.

Very large nocturnal bird with "frog-like" bill and long tail. Inhabits edges of dense forests, including mangroves. In daytime, often roosts above water. Primarily gray-brown with barred underparts and tail. Distinguished from other frogmouths by very large size. Call is a repetitive, low-pitched "oo-oo-oo-oo." (eBird)

--------------------

The one and only time we saw this wonderful nightbird. It took some jockeying around to even see the bird and there was no open view at all. It was very cool to see the huge, open mouth, use to scoop up night-flying insects.

after twilight

when nightbirds return

to roost along boulevards

slick with rain and downtown

bars fill with emptiness

the whine of distant sirens

calls for someone

to swim out past the tidewater

to deep blackness

to passersby who glance

in the window and keep

moving and maybe those

restless shadows linger

on the wall as winds rustle

overhead or underfoot:

oh, how passions rise

in the sweet chambers

of imagination, a dark-haired

beauty on a moonlit beach,

say Florida and the sand

carries the salts of the bay

in and out, delirious for want

of the moment to never end

waves erasing the sand

out and in and though she

may be the trick memory

plays or desire or loneliness

maybe what might have been

was real enough

Cryptic, uncommon nightbird of evergreen and mixed foothill and montane forests (900-2000 meters). Both sexes have dappled lichen-like plumage, the male grayish, female rusty brown. Silent birds are best distinguished from other small frogmouths by range, habitat, elevation, and bird’s comparatively small size. Song a long, haunting whistle, given repeatedly in series. (eBird)

----------------

We found this male frogmouth sitting on his nest. Here he is giving us the eye when we first arrived but he quickly relaxed and returned to snoozing while protecting his eggs.

The barn owls I used to photograph near my home seem to have totally deserted the site, much to my sorrow. So I was very grateful to be invited to a new site where a friend has set up a box. This is one of four young that the adult female raised; I wish them all the best of luck and hope they return to my nearby patch!

Cryptic, seldom-seen nightbird of lowland and foothill forests. Unlike other small frogmouths, sexes are alike. Light morph is bright rufous with scattered white dots on the wings and mottled-white underparts. Dark morph is brown but with the same general patterning. Compare with Sunda Frogmouth: male Sunda is much more heavily marked with white above and has patchier markings on the underparts, while female Sunda has a prominent white band across the chest. Sumatran and Bornean Frogmouths inhabit higher elevations. Song is a loud “weeow-wah.” Calls include “weeow” and a rapid series of “wuk” notes that resembles a thrush’s alarm call. (eBird)

---------------

I almost missed out on this bird. It required climbing a "trail" that induced a near panic attack before arriving at a tiny viewing spot (only one person at a time could be there). I leaned back against a convenient tree and managed three photos before having to leave. There is a second bird - a full-grown baby nestled to the right - but I could not get into position to see it properly. I'm thankful to have seen this lovely little frogmouth but hope never to have to do another trail like this.

On Saturday night Andrew, www.flickr.com/photos/ajhaysom/, the torch bearer (AKA the Sherpa) and I rugged up, made a thermos of coffee, grabbed some muffins and chocolate and headed off to the area around the Western Treatment Plant. The lure of Barn Owl sightings dragged us away from a Saturday night in front of the TV into the crisp, cold night.

Neither of us had ever done any wildlife shooting at night so it was going to be an adventure and guess work. We used torches and dared ourselves to try outrageous ISOs.

You never really think you are going to find what you are after on the first try but on Saturday, the photo Gods were with us and within less than 15 minutes of searching, we found a Boobook Owl. We were lucky enough to go on to find three Barn Owls, two roosting in Cypress trees and the other on a fence post. The images were noisy but usable with some post production noise reduction. I also darkened the background and desaturated. I will post a colour one later. It's not perfect but I hope you enjoy it!

This was taken at ISO 20,000.

Birds flying past the harbour bridge amid the bright orange dazzle of the floodlit north-eastern pylon.

Another night at Kirribilli, Sydney.

Photographed from the near the Jeffrey Street Wharf.

And here is Shakatak with their iconic 1980s track: 'Nightbirds':

Zoom in to see the harbourside as well as the architecture of the harbour bridge - lit up at night. Across the harbour the multi-coloured building (left) is the Shangri-La Hotel near Circular Quay.

So I am here again at Darling Harbour, in Sydney.

Standing on the Pyrmont Bridge after dark looking south over Cockle Bay to the Sofitel Hotel (right) and W Hotel (left).

The ICC Theatre & Convention Centre is situated between the two hotels. On the far left is the promenade with all the cafes, restaurants and night clubs.

Cockle Bay, at Darling Harbour, is home to many yachts and cruisers. On this occasion a yacht started its engines and, with its lights projecting a trail of lime green on the water, made its way under the bridge and out for a night cruise on Sydney harbour. It was like a 'Green Lantern', lol.

And here's Shakatak with 'Nightbirds' in keeping with the theme of my night photography treks, lol.

I run into these birds quite regularly on my sunset, dusk and after-dark photography treks around Sydney.

Look over yonder,

Apollo at a distance

You can hear his music

if you listen to the wind

I want to be there -

I want to be right there

I want to see it

with my own eyes

Bear witness,

I'm wailing like the wind

Come bear witness,

the half-breed rides again

In these hands,

I've held the broken dream

In my soul,

I'm howling at the moon

Testimony, testimony

Declare yourself - I will testify

Testimony, testimony

Speak the truth, I will testify

I had a revelation

like runaway horses

Took to the road

with a carnival show

Those golden days

on Smokey Mountain

Playing guitar

in a one man band

Bear witness,

I'm howling at the moon

Come bear witness,

I've danced among the ruins

In these shoes,

I've walked a crooked mile

All my life

I been searching for the nightbird

Testimony, testimony

Declare yourself - I will testify

Testimony, testimony

Speak the truth, I will testify

Are you ready to take the heat

Are you ready to blow the steam

Are you ready to bag the street

You got nothing to lose - but your chains

For forty days

and forty nights

I come across the desert

Apollo right by my side

Bear witness,

I'm wailing like the wind

Come bear witness,

the half-breed rides again

In these hands,

I've held the broken dream

In my soul,

I'm howling at the moon
