[life as cinema]

St. Marks Place, New York City

March 2008

The first production that was conceived by informal conversation (more like butting words together) was Pluto Dances with Jeremiah Johnson.

This is the second shoot that was inspired in a similar manner that wasn't too far off from what really happened in real life. [The full series can be found here.]

I spun the whole conversation easily into a production/story with all the melancholy of finding and feeling a place to be familiar with and the resolve of loneliness.

Finding that feeling to feel welcomed home, again.

From the art + design trade journal Creative Quarterly, I was informed I got “Runners Up” in the photography category with my photograph Nature’s Engine, Lonely Machine (photographed in Concón, Chile). The photograph will be published online in their April 2010 gallery (along with other winners) coinciding with their annual quarterly (No. 18) publication.

Diana made me this genius Poofy sculpture of Poofy riding on like...a surfboard of PANCAKES. And look, there's SYRUP. UNDER HIS NUBBLY FEET.

I almost cried when I saw it. No joke. And then I kept wooshing it around because I have the brain of a 4 year old.

:D :D :D

From the menu:

"chocolate custard, hot fudge, chocolate truffle cookie dough and vahlrona chocolate chunks, topped with chocolate sprinkles"

My first thought was "Whoa, I should get that!" And then "Wait, maybe not." A few seconds later, "Nevermind, I should get it.

It was $6.25, which bumped my food expenditure for the day (and I got to NYC at 5 PM) to around $20. Was it worth it? Probably...I mean, I'm sure it's made of good ingredients, and they shoved entire Valrhona chocolate discs in there. I BUY those discs at Whole Foods when I'm insanely hungry for chocolate (that happened once; good god, hormones). Also, it's pobably worth it because you should share this with someone else. I HAD NO ONE TO SHARE IT WITH. (Diana didn't want to partake in the insane caloric-ness...I'm about twice as large as her though).

I'm glad I tried a concrete but my complaints are that 1) those chocolate chunks were a bit too large and 2) the frozen custard was too melty. Yeah, it was hot and I knew about the meltiness beforehand from all the reviews I read, but ...too melty! (sob) Before long, I felt like I was drinking chocolate soup with huge chocolate chunks, which I couldn't entirely finish.

If I ever get another concrete, it should be because I have someone to share it with. And I wouldn't get the Shack Attack. It's hard to believe that it was a tad too chocolate-y for me. After I ate this (which I scarfed down rather quickly), I chugged 2/3rds of a small bottle of Poland Spring.

This is my first SP and I have never done one because I always think of myself as not photogenic. I just prefer to be at the back of the camera always.

Anyway, I did this for 2 reasons:

1) I joined this group and was given this challenge.

2) I have no other model (Actually, I didn't know that the group's name is "Take the Tony SP challenge". I thought you simply join and Tony will give you any kind of challenge and it doesn't have to be an SP).

And perhaps a 3rd reason is that in Strobist Sundays a few weeks ago the theme was rim lighting. I failed miserably at it and perhaps this will do it justice. The dust particles are real by the way, I did not add it in post.

Here is the example shot sent to me by Tony for the challenge: www.flickr.com/photos/newstreamer/1469157647/

I don't normally do this but I'd pretend I know what I'm doing. Below is the strobist info.

Strobist info: One strobe at my back at 1/16 and another one on camera bounced off the ceiling. I used the white card in the flash to bounce some of the light towards me.

Toes!

Albeit an oldie, but a favorite shot taken by Al and one that I have not shared here. Not having known Tam very well, I had wondered what kind of first impression she must had of me at the time with this shoot, especially when it's pretty semi-nude. Probably the last memory of my fine artsy work until I "toned down" for the rest of the year... until 2011. I'M BACK, baby.

The absence of women in my work is likely due to semi-nude work. That's just one of the reasons.

Diana drew this while we were waiting for the train in Venice. Morten threw my manatee against the wall on our first day and it made a very loud THUD.

Evil Morten!

Diana got me this personalized exploding dog sketch from the San Diego comic con!

THANKS! :)

I love the cloud. It's so friggin' happy.

Diana needed to take some test shots. -__-

I'm short and stubby. And waiting for a call from Alex or Kathy!

You see these quite a few places around Bologna. Always with a dog sleeping next to them.

Check out Diana's version!

I shared a table with Diana. Notice her freakishly good art on the wall. And then there's MEEE!

I wannit. ...perhaps some other time. I was just roaming around the Port Authority terminal before meeting Diana and a sign that said "MEXICAN BAKERY" caught my eye (I can spot em a mile away!). So I had to take a look. Didn't actually buy anything, but another time perhaps.

Diana took this at the Blip Festival last Friday with her snazzy camera + external flashie flash. She had some other funny photos of John and me, but perhaps they didn't make the cut... ;)

JOHN'S SMILE = VERY BELIEVABLE!!!

[A quick storyboard drawing on a photo print for this shooting sequence. (A personal favorite.) After scouting the location, I made my way up the stairs and found myself looking through the banisters.]

Over the weekend I took on a small job to photograph some "tests" with two new talents from a New York modeling agency. This kept my weekend in a good busy rather than idling around about my own personal projects.

I haven't worked with agency talents since... 2007. Three years ago. I have my reasons and it's not something I find myself doing exclusively.

These "tests" are to help update these individual's look portfolios. I had hoped I could start with women, but that fell through easily. At least with one contact. The rep who represented a women roster says that my work is "too fine art" and it wouldn't help them. I shrugged off the remark easily. Their loss. I wasn't particular keen with the women, in irony. They were too "fashion glamour" or dead for me. (I'm very selective with women. Finding the right woman for a production is more of a personal process than a casting process to me.)

Representative, from the male roster, says "Yes, please!" I am grateful I was given some kind of chance here.

The two individuals (named Antony and Scott) I selected and worked with were good sports, especially working in the awful late afternoon heat. The two young talents had both moved into town. Antony from northern England and Scott from Los Angeles, California and recently joined the agency.

I decided to sneak in some ideas I had planned in my head. I was relieved to hear that the guys were cool about me getting, for lack of a better phrase, "artistic". "Oh, please do whatever you want. Well, you've seen my portfolio. It's..." says Antony. "Straight-forward."

Hopefully there will be some pieces that will benefit the guys.

The shoot was simple, small and short. Minimal art direction. No big production. The location was Bensonhurst bordering Borough Park. The area is strange and desolate. It's not the most pleasant, while it's pretty amazing to look at from an urban decay way.

June 2010

One of many personal favorite photos that came out from this location. (The other is this great reaction - of a slap about to happen.) Jess walked into the scene unexpectedly. I was standing between two doors. I shot through the glass doors (the result of a hazy look).

This was shot in one of the most unusual places in Chinatown. The city's oldest dim sum parlor. It's pushing 90 years old. The air smelled that old.

And they do not have a menu. They serve you whatever the guy in the kitchen feels like it.

This particular production was spurred by a drawing I had done for a CD cover (personal work) back in September 2009.

Window within a room

Diana and I stopped by her former office (or the part of it that no one uses) to pick up some stuff. There's a room...within the room. With a window. Odd.

One of my photographs taken in Iceland with the help of my friend Robyn is published in the latest JPG Magazine, issue 21!

Five months ago, days after Christmas, I was contacted directly by the editor about the photograph selection. Quite a nice surprise. All photographs, or now that I hesitate to say, are voted by the public majority. This particular photograph of mine didn't reach that criteria, but I am glad someone else spotted it in the crowd.

Since then I've completely forgotten all about this request until today.

I typically don't hold my breath (no pun intended) when it comes down to these sort of call-for-entries and competition jazz.

In my world and heart, I am already a winner of sorts. At least I try to think so. ;)

Made use of my wool cape in this shoot. Indeed I did. "Holy crap!" - Brandon.

This particular shoot went smoothly, a first time, without too much fuss. Also the first individual who had approached me to work with. I seldom take solicitations especially when I don't have an open call. Although, these random moments tend to work out better for me and when they don't exhibit douchebag or creepiness.

Working with Brandon brought a sense of familiarity back into my work.

Big plus, Brandon has an awesome music library and it caters to my taste!
