New Brighton Lighthouse or Perch Rock Lighthouse, is a decommissioned lighthouse situated at the confluence of the River Mersey and Liverpool Bay on an outcrop off New Brighton known locally as Perch Rock. Together with its neighbour, the Napoleonic era Fort Perch Rock, it is one of the Wirral's best known landmarks.
The new year means a new beginning, like this group of young beech trees in the middle of a spruce forest.
There was a time when my homeland was covered with huge old beech forests. Forests that had grown over thousands of years. Not only were they the defining habitat, also for my ancestors, they were also an important part of our culture. My ancestors, the Germanic tribes, lived in these forests. The Romans can sing a song about how well adapted we were to this habitat.
The massive trunks of trees were the pillars of our cathedrals and our high priests read the signs from small sticks of beech wood (the beech stick formed later the the german word for letter).
But then came the industrial revolution and with it the insatiable hunger for fuel and fast-growing building materials and with it the invention of the spruce monoculture.
The forest fires and the bark beetle have been showing us how successful this grandiose idea was for several years. Human history is full of such overwhelming ideas and as you can currently see we are not through with them yet.
I'm all the happier when I see something like this. Young beeches, which establish their own biotope in the middle of the spruces and are getting ready to restore the old stable condition of the forest.
Unfortunately, this process will take another two or three hundred years and it will be difficult for me to photograph the final end result.

he New River is an artificial waterway in England, opened in 1613 to supply London with fresh drinking water taken from the River Lea and from Chadwell Springs and, originally, Amwell Springs,[1] as well as other springs and wells along its course.
The river follows the land contours but certain parts have been straightened over the centuries. Although it was at one time threatened with closure, the waterway continues to supply water to the capital. There is a designated walking route along the canal called the New River Path. It is a 28-mile (45 km) long-distance footpath which follows the course of the New River as closely as possible from its source in Hertfordshire to its original end in Islington, London

“Sometimes life takes unexpected turns. Sometimes we hide the very core of our existence because we fear the judgment of others. Sometimes the universe shifts and we are provided with a brief moment to begin anew. These moments allow us to become fearless and let our perfectly created souls shine.” ~New Beginnings
Spoonbills are a genus, Platalea, of large, long-legged wading birds. The spoonbills have a global distribution, being found on every continent except Antarctica. The genus name Platalea derives from Latin and means broad, referring to the distinctive shape of the bill. Six species are recognised, which although usually placed in a single genus have sometimes been split into three genera. All spoonbills have large, flat, spatulate bills and feed by wading through shallow water, sweeping the partly opened bill from side to side. The moment any small aquatic creature touches the inside of the bill—an insect, crustacean, or tiny fish—it is snapped shut. Spoonbills generally prefer fresh water to salt but are found in both environments. They need to feed many hours each day. The spoonbills are most distinct from the ibises in the shape of their bill, which is long and flat and wider at the end. The nostrils are located near the base of the bill so that the bird can breathe while the bill is submerged in water. The eyes are positioned to provide spoonbills with binocular vision, although when foraging tactile senses are important too. Like the ibises the spoonbills have bare patches of skin around the bills and eyes. The six species of spoonbill are distributed over much of the world. 46166

New Iberia dates its founding to the spring of 1779, when a group of some 500 colonists (Malagueños) from Spain, led by Lt. Col. Francisco Bouligny, came up Bayou Teche and settled around what became known as Spanish Lake.
Found this little building on a side street in the business district....up the street from Bayou Teche.

I needed something with the theme 'new beginnings' to have for the weekly theme challenge group and so I found myself scouring this years' folders and this one popped up. If the ripped and shattered bole of a tree torn asunder by a volcanic eruption and hence providing nutrition for new life doesn't fit the bill, what does? :)
I thought the well wishes this year would be more hearty and that this covid thing would be behind us now, but... with the infection rate skyrocketing maybe we will all build up an immunity and by mid year we can start travelling again, idk. In the meantime, stay safe, be healthy, love one another and maybe we can fist bump on the trail some time. Peace, Rich

Cei Newydd / New Quay, Ceredigion, Wales, UK
New Quay was once a flourishing shipbuilding centre and fishing port. The miles of secluded coves around New Quay provided ideal hiding places in the less salubrious but probably more profitable trade of smuggling spirits and tobacco.
Today the small local fishing and pleasure craft still come and go in the sheltered bay. New Quay’s beaches extend in a golden arc around the bay and are ideal for relaxing and strolling by the sea. Enjoy a walk along the front to the end of the Quay and watch the boats sail by. Or sit in one of the cafes overlooking the harbour and see the dolphins
As a husband I know better than to give my wife Kitchen utensils and gardening supplies as gifts on special occasions. A lesson learned the hard way. However for my wife to give me a small battery operated hand tool for Christmas, perfect. The photo is 70mm left to right. Happy new year to all those that celebrate new year now and HMM for the first of 2023. Thanks in advance for any and all views, faves and comments.
