We were treated to a particularly psychedelic sunrise this morning & couldn't help myself from picking out the turbines on the horizon with my telephoto zoom lens. Had to do a bit of cropping to get to where the action was in the photo. I used to think that turbines were a great idea but we had too many of them around here. But I have now learned to love their beauty. Plus we need much more clean energy. Bring on wind & sun power.

I pushed the sliders all the way up on this one to enhance the texture of the petals and the navy blue and fuschia pollen and stamens. There were two of these blooms in a bouquet of all dusty pink blooms and grey-green eucalyptus leaves. --

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" on the 16th of February is "fabric texture". When it was my birthday a few months ago, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas. Amongst the gifts were these three modern Indian made ribbons in the most ravishingly radiant colours and ornamented with gold thread. I love how bright and textural they are, which made me think them perfect for the theme this week. I had a very challenging 2023, so it seems apt that she gave me two ribbons featuring elephants with their trunks raised. An upward-pointed elephant trunk is said to bring energy, luck, prosperity and kindness, all of which I have experienced since receiving these as a gift from my friend in the weeks leading up to Christmas. I have accessorised them with three vintage wooden spools of colourful threads and a pair of silver embroidery scissors. I hope you like my choice for the theme, and that it makes you smile.

The deeper the blue becomes, the more strongly it calls man towards the infinite, awakening in him a desire for the pure and, finally, for the supernatural... The brighter it becomes, the more it loses its sound, until it turns into silent stillness and becomes white.

Wassily Kandinsky.

For the past forty years, Wassily Kandisky was and still is one of my major influence through his Colour Theory where he argues that artistic experiences are all about feeling and different colours affect mood. In his second theoretical book "Point and Line to Plane" he develops his theory in a peculiar language, where geometrical, physical, aesthetic, and spiritual concepts coexist naturally.

Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky (16 December 1866 – 13 December 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist. Kandinsky is generally credited as the pioneer of abstract art. Born in Moscow, Kandinsky spent his childhood in Odessa, where he graduated at Grekov Odessa Art School. He enrolled at the University of Moscow, studying law and economics. Kandinsky began painting studies (life-drawing, sketching and anatomy) at the age of 30.

In 1896, Kandinsky settled in Munich, studying first at Anton Ažbe's private school and then at the Academy of Fine Arts. He returned to Moscow in 1914, after the outbreak of World War I. Following the Russian Revolution, Kandinsky "became an insider in the cultural administration of Anatoly Lunacharsky" and helped establish the Museum of the Culture of Painting. He returned in Germany in 1920, there he taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture from 1922 until the Nazis closed it in 1933. He then moved to France, where he lived for the rest of his life, becoming a French citizen in 1939 and producing some of his most prominent art. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1944, a mere three days prior to his 78th birthday. Source Wikipedia.

Amongst the gifts was this pretty button decorated with the Willow Pattern, some beautiful embroidered and printed ribbons, an Edwardian French Blue buckle, some Estonian hand dyed lace including a butterfly, and some tiny segments of crochet, all of which I have set up on the back terrace against one of my antique embroidered Art Deco doilies from the 1930s, and accessorised with two spools of Dewhurst's Sylko cotton, in French blue and pale blue which date from between 1954 and 1958.

Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.

I don't own a single pair of shoes with heels these days (it took me many years, but I finally saw the light and my feet are eternally grateful!), so I was glad I had these miniatures to save the day. They really are incredibly tiny (only ½" long) and very difficult to handle, but I enjoy photographing them.

Stay safe, everyone.

Love it when I have time to play a little

This is the scene I captured on 20240726 0600am

Panning for gold...and Navy blue! Finally taught myself to pan fairly decently during this year's Chicago Air & Water Show. The Blue Angels fly over my house at 1,000 - 1,500 ft as they circle back to the crowds lining the shores of Lake Michigan, temporarily suspending flight paths into O'Hare Field. So we have our own back yard show :-). This is my best shot from many attempts at 300.0mm, the most my zoom lens can do...The team is supposed to be flying their less favorite Super Hornet by next year.

"Life is a Rainbow - one year in colours"

Blue [29/52 weeks)

I was watching this heron as he waded in the shallows of Esquimalt Lagoon. He suddenly poked his head underwater and came up with this colourful fish skewered on his beak. The fish is a Shiner surfperch (Cymatogaster Aggregata). They're ubiquitous along the BC coast inhabiting the shallow waters around piers, kelp beds and eel grass beds. They form schools during the daytime and Herons will sometimes 'spearfish' into a shoal.
