A long time ago, I was commercial fishing in the Gulf of Alaska and would be caught on days like this. We just called it the "nasties". We all knew what that meant.
European Wasp (Vespula germanica)
For my friends in the UK and Europe who often comment that our native Australian wasps 'don't look like wasps'.
The European Wasp was first sighted in Melbourne in 1977 although had been seen in Tasmania in the 1950's.
I don't normally like to get to close to them as, unlike most of our native wasps, they are aggressive, but this one was busy digging something out of our side fence.

I am plagued with weak lungs owing to many years of constant childhood illnesses, and as a result, if I am unlucky enough to catch your cold, I usually end up with pneumonia or a nasty chest infection at best. I was recovering from one such unpleasant chest infection after a period of prolonged ill health. A very dear friend who loves photography as much as I do, decided that I needed to be taken out of myself, go somewhere and reconnect with what I found joyful in life, so she took me to the top of Mount Macedon in the Macedon Ranges in central Victoria for a photography afternoon. It was a bitterly cold day, made even more so by the wind and the altitude, but we were very well rugged up against the bitter wind. It rained on and off. However, the trip was a wonderful one: just what I needed to help lift my flagging spirits, and the day afforded us a beautiful and striking sunset over the valley far below. Using the sunset as an analogy, my friend told me that my poor health would pass, just like a winter rainstorm, and that the sun would reappear. She was right, my health troubles did dissipate like a shower of rain, and a few weeks later, the sun shone in my life again. Now I am healthy and well, and I have happy, sunny days once more.
The theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 1st of February is "sky". Now I am not a sky watcher, like my friend who took me out to Mount Macedon that day is – always looking for that perfect elusive sunset – however I am captivated by the sky and clouds on occasion when they present something beautiful, dramatic or both! I do hope you like my choice of image from the top of Mount Macedon for the theme this week, and that like me, it makes you smile too!

Vorbild der von der Firma Kunstguß Harms in Edewecht gegossenen Figuren waren Zeichnungen aus einem Skizzenbuch der bekannten Berliner Malerin Jeanne Mammen (1890-1976) aus den zwanziger Jahren, deren Familie aus Neuharlingersiel stammte.
Kaum ein Touristenschnappschuss aus Neuharlingersiel, der nicht die beiden Bronzefiguren zeigte.
...no! He wasn´t, but as often i ask him to smile - he won´t. Ok, so he had to live with my titles :) It´s a real nice, fluffy one.

An amazing place to visit. The two openings provide access to the amphitheatre from below....this was used to allow wild animals and other nasty surprises to appear before the crowd......dark days.
After walking along the contours of the coastline for a while I did not anticipate this! My path suddenly took a rollercoaster type dive and climb across a small stream valley
Just returned from my Cali holiday with little m I will be giving various shout outs with each post. I decided to start with this one because I have not had a chance to edit any shots yet and my travel partners also posted shots from here today so I didn’t want to be left out of the partay.
In Death Valley we had the pleasure to meet up with one of the coolest cats on Flickr dbreeze the rockstar Not only is he a cool cat but he is a fabulous tour guide and motivator. He was able to motivate his friend aaron to leave Vegas at 1am to meet us at the dunes for sunrise, that alone says a lot. Death Valley was an absolute wonder. The temps got up to 119 so that part was not my favorite. But we had a good system down of sleeping during the warmest hours and venturing out at night. To me the dunes are all about textures and lines. It is not hard to get an interesting shot from this place. I found the morning hours to be more colorful and have better shadows. Not to mention it's waaaay cooler :) I will definitely be back for my dbreeze the rockstar round II tour in a cooler season You can find him in the upper left hand corner of this shot to give the scene a sense of scale. And stay tuned for some additional dune shots soon.

I took this photo at the zoological gardens. I was standing near the glass panes of the seal pool when I noticed that the moving water was refracting the sunrays and conjuring up a lovely dancing rainbow on the pebbles of the stone floor.
I'm pretty sure people were wondering what this crazy woman was doing there on the ground ; ))
I was fighting a pretty nasty bug lately that had me coughing for weeks and made me very tired and listless. Now I'm slowly coming back.
I will try to catch up during the coming week : )

If only they were heading the other way...OT-1 heads for Hayden as a thunderstorm develops to the northeast.
I got to thinking about this as alternative versions like Schrodiger's cat so we have here the final version, just below center while all the other possible versions drift off like smoke. I recall some physicist using an expression like "the collapse of the alternative" so I have borrowed that. If it's your expression send me a letter because I haven't had a letter from a physicist since I did graphics for the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois. There is, by the way, a nasty green spot in the middle, but I haven't found an adequate substitute for it.
It wasn't that cold this evening, at -21 C, but toss in a fine blowing snow with lots of wind, and it suddenly doesn't seem quite so pleasant outside. All that said, the weather conditions did make for some very interesting visuals that I couldn't resist. Naturally, I took the camera and a tripod down the highway and spent some time freezing myself solid. I did get a cool photo, or two (pun intended).
