Das Sossusvlei liegt in Namibia und ist eine von Namibsand-Dünen umschlossene beige Salz-Ton-Pfanne ( „Vlei” ) in der Namib-Wüste, die nur in sehr seltenen guten Regenjahren Wasser führt. Dann bildet sich sogar für kurze Zeit ein wenige Zentimeter tiefer See am Ende des Vlei. „Sossus” bedeutet „blinder Fluss” in der Sprache der Nama. Die umgebenden orangefarbenen Dünen sind mit über 300 Metern die höchsten der Welt und bieten, wenn man den Kamm entlang auf ihnen hinaufsteigt, einen atemberaubenden Ausblick. Die höchste ist Düne 7 mit einer Höhe von etwa 380 Metern und wird von den Einheimischen wegen ihrer Höhe und des langen Aufstiegs zum Gipfel Big Daddy oder Crazy Dune genannt.
Entstanden ist das Vlei durch Versanden des Tsauchab, der ursprünglich wahrscheinlich bis zum nur gut 50 km entfernten Atlantik floss. Die daneben liegenden und jeweils durch eine Düne vom Wasser abgeschnittenen Dead Vlei und Hiddenvlei spiegeln diese Entwicklung noch bis heute wieder. Dort stehen abgestorbene Bäume, die aufgrund des trockenen Klimas nur sehr langsam verfallen. In der Nähe des Parkeingangs befindet sich der Sesriem Cañon, der sich über einen Kilometer in den Kies gegraben hat.

This is an Image of me (in light blue shirt) performing a Blood-sugar level test to a male client (in a blue T-shirt), during a Community screening for Non-Communicable Diseases (NDCs). Seated around are other Community members queuing up for screening. Individuals with elevated Blood sugar level were referred to the nearest health facilities for Doctor’s review. During the campaign, community members were given health education on modifiable risk factors of NCDs such as, avoid harmful use of alcohol, avoid Tobacco use, advised to be physical active and to eat balance and healthy diet (avoid excessive use of sugar and salt).The screening exercise was made possible by the Oshana Regional Health Directorate.
