Information on the subject:

I thought this was the most unusual thing I saw on the Alaskan cruise in the water. These two bodies of water were merging in the middle of the Alaskan gulf and there was a foam developing only at their junction.

I thought this was an example of a Halocline described on Wikipedia. A few people have commented that a Halocline is more of a horizontal phenomenon and this is more vertically oriented.

I am pretty confident that what you are seeing is a result of the melting glaciers being composed of fresh water and the ocean has a higher percentage of salt causing the two bodies of water to have different densities and therefore makes it more difficult to mix. I'm told they will eventually mix given enough time.

People have asked me if I just happened to look out over the edge of the ship deck and see this. Actually I had been on the deck for quite some time when I noticed what appeared to be a shadow cast by clouds over the ocean about 5 miles in front of the ship. As we approached the shadow I realized it was something different. I took many shots up to the point I shot this one, but never posted them until a year after this image went viral. I really posted them to convince people I did not Photoshop this image. See the other shots here.

Information on the photograph and high view count:

On January 20, 2011, this image was viewed 71,000 times in one day. That was more times than all my other photos, sets, collections, and photostream for the 18 months prior to that date and on that date this photo was not even registered as my most interesting according to Flickr. You can see them here in my other most interesting photos according to Flickr.

On September 20, 2011, this image went through another viral surge and was viewed 177,456 times that one day, almost 50% of the total number of views it had seen since I first posted it. The following day it only saw 98,285 views. And by the 3rd day it was back to it's prior daily view level of about 500-1000 views per day.

On September 22, 2011, I was asked by Yahoo News if they could use the photo on their images of the week pages. news.yahoo.com/photos/snapshots-week-of-june-3-1307133161...

If you want to read about this amazing high view count phenomenon see this link with the details.

The original site to start all the craziness was Tumblr and as of Jan 22, 2011, the number of comments on Tumblr alone was over 6,400. On March 7, 2011 Tumblr recorded 24,546 likes, comments, and rebloggs. As of Dec 23, 2011 16:00 the Tumblr notes were over 58,000 and climbing about 75 per minute.

The interestingness finally changed and on Jan 22, 2011 this photo was up to #23 in my photostream. As of February 13, 2011, it is up to #20. You can view all of them with a black background and they look much more impressive. As of February 12, 2011, it hit 100,000. On April 2 it hit 200,000 views with 352 favorites and 3 galleries.

In April 2012, the image reached 750,000 views and reached 1,000 favorites. On August 30, 2012 it hit 800,000 with 1,085 favorites and 10 gallery entries.

The AlaskaDispatch ran an article by Ben Anderson on February 5, 2013, discussing this phenomenon and linked back to this page referencing the large number of views it has seen. You can read Ben's article here.

On November 20, 2013, Hoax or Fact reported this was the 7th most viewed of the articles on their site www.hoaxorfact.com/Most-Read.html

In early December, in honor of the image crossing 1,000,000 views I created a Merging Oceans Facebook page just for fun. Technically the view count crossed 1 million on December 11, 2013, but a problem with Flickr view count froze all views that day and did not continue counting lifetime views until December 12. That afternoon it showed the 1 million view crossing. People have commented that Flickr changed the view count system a while ago and made views arbitrarily higher than in the past, not necessarily related to the actual views, but this image has seen a pretty constant run of views per day since it first went viral, long before the view count system change.

Image Filename Coincidence?

My Canon camera automatically names the images I shoot and advanced the numbers sequentially from 0000 to 9999. I find it quite interesting that this particular image is number 0666. I did not modify it.

Here is a Vertorama of Panther Falls... in Canada's Banff National Park.

Although Panther Falls is by no means the most spectacular waterfall that I've ever seen (Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe/Zambian border takes some beating)... it is however the most spectacular waterfall that I've ever photographed.

The weather was lightly overcast when we arrived here shortly after noon... so we were basically shooting upwards into a dull white sky... far from ideal. But hey... when you've got a camera in your hand and you're facing a 66 meter high waterfall... you simply have to shoot it... regardless of the conditions. The spray at the bottom of the falls was also something that I've never had to deal with before... aim, click, wipe, aim, click, wipe... etc, etc. It was fun!

So... while I'd be the first to admit that this is not a fantastic photo... I've processed and posted it anyway... for Leon... Flickr's (unofficial) Waterfall King!

Panther Falls is actually quite a controversial waterfall... I found this rather interesting web-page while I was asking Google how high these falls were.

And I've posted this photo on a Thursday... go figure!? :)

Nikon D300, Sigma 18-200mm at 18mm, aperture of f3.5, with a 1/200th second exposure.

The Greater Flamingoes (Phoenicopterus roseus) that were congregated at Pulicat Lake near SHAR Road took off yesterday (29-Dec-2019) evening to render this video.

These pinkish flamingo flock grazes in the waters near the horizon, submerging their inverted heads, keeping their distance from humans. Their white bodies tipped with black feathers (primaries and secondaries) appear to be grayish from a distance, as though it is ash in the horizon. Moreover, to prove that they are ashes, their pink bodies appear as a flaming fire in the distance. Moreover, juveniles grazing here and there are totally grey or part -white-part-grey in shade.

Suddenly, when they don't get enough food in the waters that they are grazing in, they take off into the air almost together, but in layers of smaller groups. When thousands of such pink and grey (white bodies + black wing tips) tend to fill the sky with white, pink and black suddenly in the horizon. This appears as though the birds are rising from the fire after being burned down to ashes.

This is the closest logical reason for the legend of Phoenix that had evolved in earlier days, where the phoenix is burnt down in flamingo flames to ashes (chicks) and they rise from the ashes into flames.

Another aspect is that the Flamingo chicks are dark grey throughout while they are in the nests, while they change to part-grey-part-white as they enter their juvenile phase. As they graze and eat more adult food in the form of microscopic organisms and algae, they earn their pinkish feathers from the food that they eat. Thus, the legend of Phoenix could also be the representation of the life cycle of the Flamingos themselves.

in preparing things for today's dinner, I found the recipe called for one egg, room temperature. so, I pulled out the egg, and seeking somewhere safe, thought to put it on the window sill, as it is out of the way of most anything else.

in doing so, I remembered the old myth that it is possible that one could stand an egg on end only on the days of the equinox, and how that wasn't really so; I thought I would give it a try, and also get my photo of the day done as well.

Mythbuster: "Las Titas son Manon bañadas en chocolate..."

I believe I have 'fair dinkum' busted open the mythology surrounding unusually dated Campy rear derailleurs.

We have all seen the 2nd generation SR units dated pre 1979 and NR units with 1st generation SR plates. Were these secret prototypes that originated from the development bunker under Campagnolo HQ? The prices that have been paid would led you to expect as much......

Now my little tale....

I recently received a package from a close friend who lives in northern Italy and it consisted of about a kilogram of small rear derailleur parts and a Campagnolo stamped hand held punch set. The parts are a mix of NR, SR1st and 2nd gen components. My friend lived in a town close to the Campy factory, went to school with the children of Campagnolo employees and played with them out of school. It was common practice, and knowledge for some employees to take small components from the factory and make up rear derailleurs at home in the evening as a 'sideline'. The village barber, an ex pro racer, had a glass showcase in his shop where he not only displayed these but sold them as well.

When you think about it, what perfect sense this makes. So much easier to stuff into your pocket than a crankset - and a reasonably high value item to boot. I would say that there would be a lot of BB sets and headsets out there as well that never had boxes. These guys would not be a pedantic as us about dates and the details we agonise over....just get it together and make it work! I imagine that the 'blue collar' Campy workers of the '70s were only on basic wages and stock control would have been fairly elastic. Obviously Campagnolo Pty Ltd would have done something about this had they known, and this problem of staff theft is still one of the largest security issues that exists in modern business.

I'm glad I didn't invest in a funky collection of mismatching rears when the urge began to take hold a while back...now I can make my own!

For sale signs sprouting up in Columbia Heights; two of them are actually for rentals, but I thought the four signs on one block were indicative of the housing market slump, and overall economic downturn in 2008-2009.

Read that this could only be done on the solstice, and being from Kansas where everyone is a skeptic, and not a little stubborn, I decided to try it on January 31st. Another myth busted!

Do you remember the saying that if you grasp a stinging nettle really hard and quickly, it doesn't hurt.

Absolute Tosh...

I grabbed this nettle hard, pulled it off its stem and held it up for a minute.

The pain wasn't too bad, but the tingling lasted for about three days...
