This Ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) was photographed in the Scottish Cairngorms a little while ago.

Male Ptarmigan showing very well on Glen Shee.

A special moment, as my first ever sighting of this species.

After searching for Ptarmigan on several mountain tops, it was a relief to find a small group of 3 on Glen Shee, on our last morning before we had to leave Scotland by early afternoon. Very much a last minute success!!

A male Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) were frequently observed on the tundra near our camp. They have a very distinctive call which we noted upon our arrival at Karrak Lake, Nunavut.

As noted before, the birds were quite tame and allowed us some good photographic opportunities. Kodachrome 64 slide film was our only film type and I recently had the slide digitally scanned for use on this site.

The Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) was also observed in the McConnell River, Nunuvat area.

It was also delightful to come across these special creatures which appeared to be scattered across the tundra landscape.

Our field camp was south of the community of Arviat along the west coast of Hudson's Bay.

It was photographed using Kodachrome 64 slide film.

The males do change in plumage during the breeding season but the ones we encountered were still in the white winter plumage.

Images were captured on Kodachrome 64 slide film.
