The Alcazaba of Almería is a fortified complex in Almería, southern Spain. The word alcazaba, from the Arabic word (القَصَبَة; al-qaṣabah), signifies a walled fortification in a city.
The Koppelpoort is a city gate in Amersfoort. It is a combination of a land and water gate. The name Koppelpoort refers to the area outside the gate that was and is called "De Koppel". The area served as a common meadow for, among other things, the farms that were placed inside the walls after the construction of the second city wall.
The Koppelpoort could be closed by means of a double treadmill. It still functions.
The gate was built between 1380 and 1425 as part of the second city wall. The entire wall was completed around 1450. The gate was attacked in 1427 during the siege of the city. This attack was repelled.
The gate was opened and closed every day by wheel turners. The wheel shakers (minimum 12 persons) were picked up in the morning and evening by various guards. It was a very dangerous job: if they didn't start walking at the same time, they could fall and be dragged along, often with fatal consequences. Before the shot could go down, it had to go up first to remove the iron pins that were inside. Only then could it go down. When the shot goes down, walking in the wheel becomes easier and faster, many people trip and break limbs.

Moray eels can be dangerous. With their large sharp teeth they sometimes inflict serious injuries on divers when the divers come to close, for example with the hand.
To eat, they tear their prey into pieces before eating it. They mainly feed on fish, crustaceans and molluscs, but some species are carnivorous. Moray eels have a second set of jaws that move forward to completely consume their prey.
The moray eels or Muraenidae belong to the order of eels. Like the eels, they also have smooth skin covered with a protective mucus. In some moray eels, this slime is even poisonous! Most species do not have pelvic or pectoral fins. This makes them very similar to snakes. Their body can grow up to two meters in length.
In general, moray eels have very poor eyesight. They usually sit with their long body hidden in a hole and sit with their mouth open. Their mouth opens and closes almost constantly. But they actually make this kind of yawning movement to make their breathing easier. When prey comes too close, they shoot forward and grab it. However, moray eels are most active at night.

The plant originates from the Mediterranean region. In the Netherlands and Belgium, however, the plant has been present for many centuries and probably brought back by the Romans. Chicory can be found in roadsides, but can also be found along dikes, in dry grassland, near walls and on landfills. The flowering period runs from July to August.

THE STORY OF THE SCHIELANDS HOUSE
If the walls could talk, we would know so much more about the rich history of the Schielandshuis. It was built at a time when the Coolsingel was still a canal and the skyline of Rotterdam was determined by the Laurenskerk. In 1665, the Schielandshuis was taken into use by polder administrators of wealthy descent. They ensured, among other things, that the water in the city was contained. Among them, the Schielandshuis took on the appearance of a city palace. It is not for nothing that the French Emperor Napoleon and Alexander, the Tsar of Russia, once slept here.
BEACON OF HISTORY
The Schielandshuis was home to the Schieland Water Board for over a century and a half. She used the luxurious accommodation for meetings, eating and sleeping. During those first glory years, it was not open to the public. It was considered one of the most striking buildings in the center of Rotterdam and was a real attraction. The atmosphere of that time can still be found today in the interior of the period rooms. In the lean years, when the Schielandshuis lost its function as a guest house, the house was still rented out and opened to the public. In 1773 a theater was built in the basement and a few years later the first floor became a workplace 'on stand' for city hall staff. The municipality of Rotterdam bought the private property in 1840. The Utrecht art collector mr. F.J.O. Boymans wanted to bequeath his art to the city on the condition that a suitable place was found for it. Museum Boymans opened its doors a few years later.
REOPENING
A fierce fire in the mid-19th century caused a lot of damage. Documents and art were lost, as was the original 17th-century furnishings. Only the walls remained. The municipality of Rotterdam gradually brought the Schielandshuis back to the atmosphere of that time and reopened it as Museum Boymans and Museum Rotterdam. As if by miracle, the national monument survived the bombing of Rotterdam. In recent years, the city's house has largely stood empty. With the arrival of Rotterdam Partners and Rotterdam Tourist Information as 'main residents', the Schielandshuis is coming back to life. They literally and figuratively open the doors for visitors from home and abroad, companies and residents.
HOUSE OF THE CITY
Wrapped in a modern high-rise building, the Schielandshuis is a historic icon. Everyone is welcome in this house. It is a place for everyone who lives, works or stays in Rotterdam. It is your starting point for a visit to Rotterdam, a place to relax and meet people. It is the house where you are inspired and informed or where you come to do business. As usual you can eat in the Schielandshuis and to relax, the secret garden is the place to be. The residents of the 'House of the city' all have a big heart for Rotterdam and from there they try to help the city move forward with infectious enthusiasm. Networking and connecting people, initiatives and trade are central.
The past, present and future come together in the Schielandshuis. In this house, work is done on the Rotterdam of the future with respect for history.

On m'a vu dans le Vercors
Sauter à l'élastique
Voleur d'amphores

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bourtange is a protected village view. Although the canals and walls suggest otherwise, Bourtange never had city rights.
Bourtange was an independent municipality between 1811 and 1821.
In 1821, Bourtange merged into the municipality of Vlagtwedde, which in 2018, together with the municipality of Bellingwedde, formed the new municipality of Westerwolde.
Stave churches are considered to be among the most important examples of wooden Medieval architecture in Europe. In the Middle Ages, there were probably more than 1,000 stave churches in Norway. Today, only 28 remain
A stave church is made of wood, and the construction is made out of poles ("staver" in Norwegian), hence the name. Most of the remaining stave churches in Norway were built between 1150 and 1350. In the middle ages there were similar types of churches all over North-Western Europe. In Norway there was a tradition for using wood in artwork as well as in constructions, and this lead to the development of a unique technique that the stave churches are a perfect example of. The decoration is a fascinating mix of both Christian and viking symbolism.
This defense tower with walls almost one and a half meters thick formed the main link in the defense against attacks from the sea. The tower was built in 1532. In 1614, the tower is no longer considered necessary in terms of defensive function and the North Compgnie moves into the tower. They were focused on Whaling in the Ice Sea. The Nordic Company was dissolved in 1641.

High above the shimmering waters of Lake Ohrid, where the sky seems to linger in a clear, endless blue, lies a place where time feels different. Here, on the hill of Plaošnik, stands the Church of Saints Clement of Ohrid and Panteleimon — a church built not only of stone, but of history, faith, and stories that transcend centuries. Long before the silence here became so tangible, this place resonated as a center of knowledge and spirituality. In the 9th century, Saint Clement of Ohrid, a disciple of Cyril and Methodius, settled here. He founded one of the first Slavic universities, where thousands of students learned to read, write, and believe in their own language. It was a revolutionary idea at the time — education for the people, rather than only for the elite. The church you see today is a reconstruction, but its soul is ancient. Beneath the ground lie layers of early Christian basilicas, mosaics, and foundations that date back to Roman times. As you walk slowly along its walls — like in your photo, where the warm light brings out the glow of brick and natural stone — you notice the distinctive rhythm of Byzantine architecture: red brick alternating with pale stone, repeating through the centuries. Inside, another world unfolds. Soft light, the scent of incense, and frescoes that tell their stories without words. It is believed that Clement himself is buried here, which still makes this place a significant pilgrimage site. Ohrid itself is often called the Jerusalem of the Balkans, once said to have had 365 churches — one for every day of the year. And yet, this place feels different. More intimate. As if everything began here.
High above Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia stands the Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon, where history, faith, and early Slavic education began. Built on ancient foundations, this peaceful place still carries the spirit of Saint Clement — in stone, light, and silence.
Intiemer. Alsof hier alles begonnen is.

Located in Cortes de Pallás, in the Umbría de Chirel, we find a spectacular hiking trail to the castle of Chirel. Although this place has a great landscape to offer, we are shrouded in a thick fog. The big advantage of the bad weather is that we don't meet anyone. We have the realm to ourselves. The first part is not that steep and is a fine path with grit and small stones. To my right I see a mountain in the mist, to my left a sloping abyss. There I could see beautiful views if the weather were not so gray. I can now mainly see the sides of my hood and in front of me about a meter or so, until my view is obscured by the fog. The dew on the hundreds of cobwebs in combination with the mist give a special atmosphere. Every now and then we stop for a moment to catch our breath. We fantasize about the beautiful view we could have now. You better laugh about it! When I look halfway across the forest it feels like I'm alone in the world. Suddenly I am startled by a Spanish ibex and he is startled by me. He quickly disappeared into the fog. It is closely related to the Alpine ibex.
The Castillo de Chirel is located above the El Júcar Gorge. It was a very important building and an important place for the strategic control of trade on the Júcar route. Dating back to the 15th century, there is evidence that this fortress was one of the most important in the area. The castle is well preserved and with its triangular layout, it conforms to the topography of the country. The fortress lent itself to defense both for its strategic location and for defensive features such as arrow slits and a moat on one side. Although the fortress has been destroyed in parts, you can still see the walls, the water tank and the main tower. There is a rock that rises nicely above the El Júcar gorge. Impressive thick fog and rich cultural heritage make this trail a unique experience.
Ecaussinnes Castle
When the castle was built in the 12th century under Count Baudouin V of Hainaut, it played a strategic role in the Région du Centre, an often disputed area between France and the Low Countries. In 1372, Simon I de Lalaing had the current castle built.
Around 1500, when the Croÿ family held sway, the walls were raised and new buildings were added.
From 1629 to 1854, the castle was continuously used by the van der Burch family. The van der Burchs were forced to sell the whole estate to divide it among their various heirs. The Duke of Arenberg became the new owner.
During the First World War, it was first occupied by the Germans, who installed a barracks, prison, ammunition depot and hospital there. Afterwards, the castle was occupied by the Canadians.
In 1928, Count Adrien van der Burch bought the castle. He carried out a thorough restoration, with great respect for the medieval and 17th century architecture of the whole. His only son, Yves, was captured as a resistance fighter during the Second World War and died in a concentration camp in 1945. When Count Adrien was left childless in 1954, he set up a foundation just before his death that currently manages the castle.

Saint Naum Monastery is one of the most atmospheric places on Lake Ohrid. In the soft evening light, the centuries-old stone walls and Byzantine domes come beautifully to life. Founded around the year 900 AD by Saint Naum, the monastery occupies a peaceful setting near the Albanian border, surrounded by cypress trees, gardens, and the crystal-clear waters of the lake. From the monastery grounds, there are sweeping views of the mountains surrounding Lake Ohrid. As the last rays of sunlight bathe the buildings in warm colors, the courtyard gradually fades into shadow. The silence is broken only by the sound of footsteps on the ancient cobblestones. Here, history, nature, and spirituality come together in a truly remarkable way. The monastery is one of the most important religious and cultural landmarks in North Macedonia. Together with Lake Ohrid, this region forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yet it is the quiet moments at the end of the day that make this place truly special: the warm light, the centuries-old architecture, and the timeless atmosphere of Saint Naum.
Saint Naum Monastery at sunset, on the southern shore of Lake Ohrid. The historic monastery glows in the evening light, surrounded by cypress trees, mountains and the tranquil atmosphere of one of the Balkans’ most remarkable cultural landmarks.

The Royal Grand Palace is a complex of buildings at the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam and later Thailand since 1782. It consists of not only royal and throne halls, but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It covers an area of 218,000 square metres and is surrounded by four walls, 1900 metres in length. After King Rama I ascended to the throne in 1782, the palace was built. Prior to this, the royal palace and centre of administration had been located in Thonburi, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. For various reasons, the new King considered the former capital to be unsuitable and decided to establish a new capital on the other side of the river. Admission fee is free of charge for Thais and 500 baht for foreigners. You'll need to wear culturally appropriate attire when visiting the Grand Palace in Bangkok. This means being well covered. Visitors should wear long skirts/trousers and sleeved shirts—basically anything that covers more than the lower arms and head. Fortunately, after the covid period, it is not yet busy with tourists. Thailand has just ended their quarantine policy. Face masks are no longer mandatory. Great to visit the Grand Palace one more time now. Chakri Maha Prasat Hall was a royal residence built by King Rama V in 1877. King Rama V used this building as his residence. And now this building is used for state banquets. The Phra Dusit Maha Prasat - throne hall dominates with a tall gilded spire. The Phra Thinang Aphorn Phimok Prasat is an open pavilion, built next to the Phra Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall.
Chakri Maha Prasat Hall was a royal residence built by King Rama V in 1877. The British architect's original design required three domes over the building. But King Rama V had it turned into Prasat spires. So this is the only building in The Grand Palace that mixed the lower part of the European-style throne room with a Thai-style roof. King Rama V used this building as his residence. And now this building is used for state banquets. The Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall was built on a symmetrical cruciform plan, the roof is topped with a tall gilded spire. The hall is considered an ideal archetype of Thai traditional architecture. It was built by King Rama I to replace an earlier wooden hall that burned down in 1789. King Rama I intended to use the present building for his own reclining condition. Thus the main function of this hall for in-state lying of kings, queen and members of the royal family. The funeral urns of High-ranking members of the royal family usually lay in state in the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall for a hundred days. The Phra Thinang Aphorn Phimok Prasat is an open pavilion, built next to the Phra Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall. The pavilion was built by King Rama IV as a dressing pavilion for the king to change his crown and other ornaments used at a coronation.

Although the first mention of La Follie Castle dates back to 1366, it is quite likely that there was already a fortified residence on this spot at the edge of the small river la Sennette as early as the mid-13th century.
At the time, la Follie was a fortified castle, in the tradition of the time, flanked by 4 round corner towers, connected by walls 3 metres thick.
In the 16th century, Isabeau de Witthem de Beersel had the old castle converted into a pleasant home without, however, completely demolishing it.
In 1691, the castle was destroyed by Louis XVI's troops and fell into disrepair.
The current appearance of the castle is due to Sébastian-Charles de la Barre de Flandre, and no longer resembles the castle of the early 16th century. After him, the castle passed into the possession of the de Spangen family through inheritance and into the possession of the de Lichtervelde family through marriage, whose descendants still inhabit it.
--------------------------------------

Rosendael Castle is a late medieval castle, originally built by the Count of Guelders. The castle is located in the village of Rozendaal near Velp, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is part of the nationally protected historic estate of Rosendael.
The keep was originally approximately 25 meters high and has a diameter of 16 meters, making it the largest tower of its kind in the Netherlands. With walls up to 4 meters thick, the keep also boasts the thickest walls in the country. The rooms within the keep are square. Two of them are covered by barrel vaults, and the highest by a domed vault.
The castle was first mentioned in 1314, and Count Reinoud I was its first resident. His son Reinoud II was also lord of the castle.
After the counts and dukes of Guelders, the castle became the property of bailiff Willem van Scherpenzeel, who exchanged it for his Coldenhove castle in 1536. In 1579, he sold it again to Dirck van Dorth. Van Dorth had many changes made to the castle, including the creation of gardens, ponds, and streams. After Van Dorth, the estate and castle were successively owned by the Van Arnhem, Torck, and Van Pallandt families. Since 1536, the Planken Wambuis forest, heathland, and hunting area near Ede also belonged to the estate.
Under lord Lubbert Adolph Torck, who was married to the wealthy Petronella Wilhelmina van Hoorn, the gardens were redesigned in 1732, under the architecture of Daniël Marot. Among other things, the shell galleries were constructed during this period.
Of the original castle, only the keep remains. In 1722, a square house was built alongside the tower, and various outbuildings and stables were constructed. This made it more of a country house than a castle.
The gardens and ponds were renovated in the 19th century by architect Jan David Zocher Jr., who, among other things, combined several smaller ponds into one large one. The shell galleries were also renovated, and during the Van Pallandts' time, the "Bedriegertjes" (little deceivers) were built there.
In 1860, architect Lucas Hermanus Eberson designed a modification to the interior, commissioned by the couple R.J.C. van Pallandt-Torck.
After the Second World War, during which the castle was hit by an American bomb and the park was partially destroyed by a stray V-2 rocket, the estate fell into disrepair until 1977, when the last Baron Willem Frederik Torck, Baron van Pallandt, transferred it to the foundations Het Geldersch Landschap and Vrienden der Geldersche Kasteelen (The Gelderland Landscape and Friends of Gelderland Castles). The country house and garden were restored and have been partially open to the public since 1989. The Planken Wambuis estate had already been sold to an investment company in 1932.[1] Around 1985, the library, which contains some 3,000 books and manuscripts, was also restored, including those from Queen Christina of Sweden addressed to the philosopher René Descartes. Lord of the castle, Jan van Arnhem (1636-1716), collected these works at the time.
The castle and park are among the Top 100 listed by the National Heritage Agency.
