The matriarch, T65B, was hunting a very large male California sea lion at noon today in 60’ of water off the Marina dunes. Named Chunk by researchers in B.C., she is 30 years old and had three offspring with her - a 12 year old male, a 4 year old female and a calf. The T64B pod of Bigg’s Killer Whale (Orca) is from British Colombian waters, only just arrived in Monterey Bay in the last twenty days. It was a phenomenal encounter - lots of chasing, the sea lion hiding against the hull of our boat, the Star of Monterey skippered by our very good friend, Tinker, with the kill taking place just as we slipped away, the sea lion dashing for cover against a different boat but not quite making it.
