I’m sure you can tell, can you? It was very exciting on the day one of our trip. GM’s Renaissance Center is a magnificent structure that is impossible not to notice in downtown Detroit. My mind was going in to overdrive just thinking about the angles from where I can capture it. This was the first location from where I was able to frame it with the very interesting, single track encircling transportation services called “People mover”. What do you think?
The People Mover aka Tommorowland Transit Authority.
Not an easy shot to master. The track will move fast and slow at different times in the ride and about every 10 ft or so it seems to jump in the tracks.

Idling 645 prime mover echoes high note in the air as the cold night slowly take over the town of Cochrane in an already lost battle.
The Cochrane yard crew sit for now, inside the warm cab of GP9 1601, waiting for ONR Polar Bear mixed train arrival before starting the chores assigned to it.
Hard to believe but in less than 30 minutes, the place will be surrounded by railroad employees, passengers and locomotives assisting with the Bear's yarding.

During my visit this year (Oct 2019), earth movers were busily working on new water impoundments along the Kern River Flood Canal just west of the Tule Elk State Natural Reserve near Tupman, California. The Kern River is usual dry with most of the water taken out of it updstream except in wet years that have high amounts of spring run off. The impounds at the end of the river along the flood canal allow for water storage during these wet years and, according to a geologist I talked to, needed groundwater recharge. The sizes of the equipment working on the project were impressive.

"Cantar, é mover o dom
do fundo de uma paixão
Seduzir, as pedras, catedrais, coração
Amar, é perder o tom
nas comas da ilusão
Revelar, todo o sentido
Vou andar, vou voar, pra ver o mundo
Nem que eu bebesse o mar
Encheria o que eu tenho de fundo"

After wyeing at South Amana, Railroading Heritage of Midwest America's "Quad Cities Rocket" makes its second trip across the Iowa River at Iowa City, now on the eastbound return trip to Silvis, IL. Today's trip is the "City of Wilton", traversing the IAIS Iowa City Sub from Silvis, IL to South Amana, IA and back. It's powered by the UP DDA40X No. 6936 with IAIS's Rock Island Heritage ES44AC following behind.
These are the first mainline excursions for equipment owned by RRHMA, who's based at the former Rock Island Shop Complex at Silvis, IL. In cooperation with the IAIS as they utilized their trackage, round trips were made on September 20-21, running west as the "City of Wilton" on the 20th and east as the "City of Bureau JCT" on the 21st. Tickets were sold as a fundraiser to benefit non-profit organizations such as Operation Lifesaver and Central States Steam Preservation Association. Passengers rode on either Union Pacific "Steamliner" coaches from RRHMA's fleet or open window, heavyweight coaches provided by the IAIS.
Leading the way for both days' excursions is the UP No. 6936, an EMD DDA40X built in 1971. It's the world's largest operating diesel locomotive. 47 total were built between 1969 and 1971, all exclusively for the UP. They were nicknamed "Centennials" and numbered in the 6900 class as they first arrived in May of 1969, the same month as the 100th Anniversary of UP's Golden Spike Ceremony in Utah. These massive behemoths feature two 16-645E3A prime movers in a single 98' long frame, delivering a total of 6,600 hp. They also had two separate 4-axle trucks and a total of 8 traction motors. They were also often referred to as "Big Jacks" on the UP.
The 6936 was delivered in January of 1971 and made its last run in revenue freight on May 6, 1985. Afterwards, it was set aside for use in UP's excursion fleet, and for the next quarter century, it's illustrious career included everything from excursions, inspection trips, business trains, the occasional freight and even assisting steam locomotives among other special events. It's last run was in 2015 pulling the Cheyenne Frontiers Day Train behind the E9's, though it was brought out one last time on July 12, 2016 to help the UP No. 844 as it was brought back into service.
The 6936 had been stored at the Cheyenne Roundhouse until 2022, when UP donated it and several other pieces of historical equipment to RRHMA. In 2023, it became operational again, and on the weekend of September 20-21, 2025, it made its grand return to the mainline, having not led a passenger train in a over a decade.
Railroading Heritage of Midwest America is based at the historic Rock Island Shop Complex at Silvis, IL, which was first constructed in 1903. RRHMA purchased the complex from National Railway Equipment in 2022, and its home to the Centennial as well as the UP No. 3985, the UP No.5511, ATSF No. 537 and IAIS No. 6988. Passenger cars and other rolling stock reside there as well, some still being restored. 9/20/25.
Tentei mais uma vez, mas não resisti e coloquei uma florzinha, tenho a impressão de que nunca mais nesta vida vou conseguir deixar as unhas sem desenhos. O que fazer???
Mas adorei...rs.
We spent some time downtown to work with lights and motion. As we waited for the people mover to pass this couple came up to ask what was going on. So I enlisted them as models under the light to add a human element and a bit of mystery to the shot. We all had a good laugh over it.

My girl moved away
Can't help but think it's something that I say that
Makes her flee my loving arms and smiling face
And moves to a place where nobody even lovingly says her name
This is London, right?
I'm embarrassed to say I can't quite remember. I processed and edited this photo as part of a bigger trip. I'm too lazy to check the EXIF and cross-reference the dates... even though that would have taken less time than writing this sentence. But, instead, I'm saying it like this to let you know that sometimes my memory fades a bit. Some spots I remember perfect perfect perfect perfect... and others fade away and drift into others. I'm not sure why memory works like this... why there are some things that are perfect and some that are fuzzy. The way that memory works in this incomplete way is interesting to me.
